Not close with her by any means but Ashlyn’s great. I trained with her at my academy in North Dallas during our homeschooling/late arrival at school group every morning. Always nice but so intense and purposeful during practices. Hitting with her was always fun, it’s so nice to see her doing well in the big tournaments.

Osaka has struggled since her return with lots of first and second round losses. For better or worse, she’s earned her current, comparatively low ranking even with the aid of wild cards. Ironically, her best results so far this year have been on clay with a good run in Rome.

It will be interesting to see how she responds the next couple of years. Based on her performance and comments over the course of the season, I think there’s still some lingering doubts as to whether she’ll fully committed to finding and maintaining her top form. Her previous success makes her ongoing potential obvious, but not everyone who can wants to.

Mostly due to her BLM support in summer '20. She seemed pretty popular here before that(since she beat Serena). Most of this board is quite conservative. And a lot of Djokovic fans were enraged when her protest caused Cincy Masters to shut down all matches for one day(Djokovic was scheduled to play his semi that day and this board went nuts - Djokovic publicly expressed confusion about why his match was being postponed)
