Other sports have very good annoucers, why it tennis stuck with Pat Mac?!

I mean Pat Mac makes an interesting tennis match boring as crap with his pedestrian remarks. Team him up with Dick Enberg and you have a real snoozer no matter who is playing. Can ESPN get someone who actually competed in this sport at a high level so we can get good insight in the competitive struggle? Perhaps a Jim Courier, Johnny Mac or even Michael Chang, Andre Agassi or even Ivan Lendl. It is so much more interesting when high level pros spend time in the commentators booth. Pat mac is innocuous but we need vitality and insight in the booth.

Patrick McEnroe was a Davis Cup Captain and won a Major in Doubles. The man knows tennis - the technical game - the in's and out's - far better than his brother.

John McEnroe, has done won a major in doubles, and then some, how do you figure Pat knows the game better, because he got a job as a coach?!?

Hmm.
But I do agree, P-Mac is annoying and I don't like him as a commentator, if I want to hear a technical commentator I'll listen to Martina Navratilova, she actually knows what she is talking about.
Pat McEnroe's only suggestion during matches is to take some pace off, hit with more margin, and wait and see what happens.

Except when he was criticizing Roddick the other day, rightfully so, Roddick is lost on a court these days.

b/c his last name is McEnroe.. P. Mac just lucky.. Davis Cup Captain..?? anyone can be a Davis Cup Captain seriously.. you don't play.. you just let the player play.. He has done nothing for tennis.. I wish USTA let him disappear and get someone with fresh ideas.. like Courier, Martin.. Sampras to guide the youngsters..

P-Mac is a lot more in the know on the men's game than Enberg, Shriver, Fernandez, and Drysdale who all just regurgitate information from press conferences and the news.

They are all an embarassment to this sport. They are part of the problem why tennis is not popular. The ESPN Sports Center guys do a better job recapping and they are not tennis people! If your best lines are "hello!" and "dropper!" you bore me to death! Please sign Courier or Agassi.

I don't agree with that. Pat knows the game better than John? Don't think so.

Agassi has stated that he would not want to do it. He is not willing to put in the time that it would take to be good at commentating.

The only reason I like watching ESPN's feed:

- the theme song (love the new one and loved the old one as well)
- and getting to watch in HD

Otherwise I had a lot of fun last night watching a match from the Euro Sport feed on atdhe.net.

Do what I do... just turn the volume way down and you can't make out what the commentators are saying.

I have to admit I've been impressed with Navratilova's commentating on TC. She's provided some of the best technical analysis on player's strokes and court coverage.

Have you ever listened to John? He knows nothing about racquets, the rules, etc. The man had the greatest hands in history, and was one of the greatest players, but that doesn't mean he knows tennis inside and out. If success was all it took to commentate, let's put Sampras in the booth.

Wait, wait, wait a minute here.

Fowler (foulmouth) and PMac commentating on a match your complaining about PMac?????????

Before we start complaining about guys that have actually played the game and have some actual (even if occasional) insight we should be complaining about the idiots like Fowler.

Write to ESPN, they will listen. They have made some very big changes this year, and I sent my fair share of letters. They are really trying now, so this is the time to get your 2 cents in.

Need more Jeff Turango, that guys is the best announcer I've heard. Its like watching a match while a high performance coach tells you everything you ever wanted to know about tennis.

I think Martina is the most insightful followed closely by Johnny Mac.
Cliff Drysdale is most interesting all around and usually partners with Pat. I like the South African accent too (but detest Australian accents). I think you hire P Mac when you can't afford his brother.

rather have him than shriver, carillo, fowler, or almost anyone else there.

I think it should be Nastase, Connors, and JMac as the commentary team. I wonder how seriously they would actually take it or if they would cause antics :D
