Outer wrist discomfort

So, I,ve been been playing tennis for some years, started with the boost aero and moved to blade v9 100 and now blade v9 98, at my club we play with the head tour balls, I feel them heavy and hard making my racket twist on slight mishits causing discomfort on my outer wrist after a training session, Ive added weight to 3 and 9 oclock for higher twistweight and bigger sweetspot and using a comfort grip with comfort overgrip. The raquet seems to twist more on my forehand with softer strings than it does with stiffer strings. I dont have any issues when playing with regular duty balls. But I feel like I need to resolve this issue with these head tour balls for the problem to not get worse.

Do I have to change the raquet or what do you recommend ? Is the blade v9 98 too fragile for hard hitters ? I can hit pretty hard, more flat than topspin and use a grip somewhere between eastern and semi western.

Currently playing with the blade v9 98 strung with volkl cyclone at 51lbs, tried playing with poly tour pro but they made the raquet twist too much.

Added about 1-2g at 3 and 9 oclock, added a thicker replacement grip for comfort and overgrip, so about 10g added to the handle overall, the raquet weighs in at 332g, I have not measured the balance and swing weight.

Blade v9 is foam-filled, so it should be dampening impact.

Do you use a dampener? I know people say that it only suppresses the sound but I think it does do some real dampening.

Side view video of your forehand would really help. I would want to check for things like if you're hitting out in front, are you too wristy things like that.

high doses of manganese and glucosamine.

It works , people only want to complain and say there dr never told them to take it.

Uncanny. This video popped up now:

Thanks for the upload, that explains alot, experienced exactly the same thing in the same time frame but on the outer wrist, and I've tried it all, strings, weight, balance. Im switching raquets :)

What raquets do you recommend guys ? Im thinking about trying out the pure drive 100 and pure aero 100 because I didnt have any issues with the boost aero ? Anymore recommendations ?

The Health & Fitness Forum has many more threads on Injuries.

Pain on that side of the wrist is a common injury. Wrist pains seem to have a reputation for being difficult to heal.

The USTA has some information on the common wrist injury I believe.

There is more than this from the USTA.

I once had a wrist pain and I was working on both the forehand and serve strokes. I took a video of both strokes. The serve showed a wrist bend that looked different and stressful to the wrist. I corrected that and the pain went away.

I often saw different and stressful looking angles in poster's stroke videos.

I have had pain on my ulnar side for a long time. In my experience it's usually caused more by bad technique than by equipment. Switching from a full western to an eastern forehand almost solved the issue on its own for me.

I've asked a doctor about it, he said in those area there are a lot of small ligaments that are hard to treat effectively. In my case it was the lunar ligament which was a bit weakened but the doctor still decided not to surgically treat it, since it wasn't too bad since changing my forehand.

The most common injury on that side is probably TFCC, look it up and check if your pain is in that area. A wrist widget might help if that's the case. Otherwise check if it might be golfer's elbow.

I see you already play with an extreme eastern sort of grip so maybe that's not your issue. Do you play a one handed backhand? Check with a video if any of your shots put the wrist in an uncomfortable position. Check also if you exagerate wrist snap on your shot, something I used to do. When I was late to the ball i wasn't transfering energy efficiently, my body and my legs were still so my arm and wrist tried to compensate to give some spin or power; also true on serve.

If you can't find any big issue there experiment with strings and racquets. It's a long journey but worth it if you want to play for a long time. Let us know.

Clash 100

And for whatever this is worth, I played with a Blade 98 for like an hour and it was magical, but it hurt the inside of my forearm near the elbow, never had a racquet cause pain there before.

You should have a clear idea of some specific technique for each of your strokes. 1HBH or 2HBH, Forehand with grip. Serve?

Many people have assembled their strokes over years and they are DIY techniques.

The exact cause of injuries are often not known. But there are associations of certain strokes and certain injuries, for example, of tennis elbow and the 1HBH. If you have a one hand backhand there were some comments by Duane Knudson on causes.

The TFCC mentioned by @Birrittene96 is the very common injury I had read of. Find out what tennis stroke it is associated with.

Pubmed are usually not free online, but abstracts. Search also for NCBI PMC publications, as they are free online.

Google: TFCC NCBI PMC
THIS SEARCH SHOWS MANY FREE PMC ONLINE FINDS ON TFCC.

Also search using "Google Scholar" for publications , free on line will be shown to the right.

Identify your stroke techniques as best you can and study stroke videos of some ATP and WTA players with the same or most similar strokes. If things look different and stressful pay attention.

Don't stress injured tissues or areas with pain. For tendon injuries see thread Tendon Injury Nuthouse. Stressing torn tendons can result in defective tendon tissue in a very short time. See a well qualified Dr.

Don't play with pain.

Did the video explain anything? I thought no root cause was identified.

My personal opinion is that the frame may be allowing transmission of waves of certain frequencies and amplitudes on ball contact (without dampening them). Some frequencies may be resonating with bone structure in the arm.

I think it has more to do with balance and flexibility. I had a racquet that hurt my wrist even when swinging without a ball

Locate the pain in drawings that indicate "wrist pain".

Information exists that will show you some common causes of pain at that location.

I used to look at my health problems and pick the ones I wish were causing my problems. Often that could be it. That is why Dr's are critical. Also problems that I could fix with some money were also popular for me. Then I read the article in Tendon Injury Nuthouse and had another fearful viewpoint of defective healing if I were wrong.

The easiest fix is buying something like a wrist band or a racket. But if the issue is your technique you would continue to stress the unknown injured tissues. In the case of tendon tears - in as little as "2 or 3 weeks" the injured tendon may begin to heal defectively and form defective tendon tissue. Permanent? See thread Tendon Injury Nuthouse.

When researching a fix, first collect all information on all likely causes. Technique is always mentioned I believe. Is TCFF located where your pain is? What tennis stroke is TCFF associated with? Remember there is always uncertainty of exactly what causes injuries.

Why do you believe that it is your racket vs your technique?

Do you have a 2hbh?

My son had wrist pain that resolved.

From what I read and can remember, his issue was similar to delpo's, which is caused by the heads of the radius/ulna converging (being too close). Unsure if my son outgrew it, or if the widget brace was the actual resolution.

I switched to the head speed mp legend 2025 model with hy-bor. I feel the raquet is more stable, although there are stiff strings in it at the moment. I practiced yesterday with those hard head tour balls and could feel my wrist getting beat up when mishitting, shooting late contact or serving incorrectly when the ball is slightly behind me.

I do believe that there must be some sort of technique issue that I have to work on, and the beat up is mostly from my forehands. But I have an issue locating exactly what it is, if its the vibrations or the twisting of the raquet. Im gonna try a full bed of natural gut and a hybrid with natural gut in the mains.

I live in Sweden by the way, and during winter now I believe everything stiffens up even more, especially the rubber in the head tour balls.

Anything else you guys recommend?

1) What stroke are you trying to do? ATP serve, forehand, etc.

2) Do you have a model ATP player with that stroke and their video?

3) Have you videoed your stroke at 240 fps and with small motion blur?

4) What does a frame by frame comparison show for your wrist?

Forehand?
bent or straight elbow
grip
model forehand player?
videos of ATP players widely available.

What tensions have you tried? Its common to lower tensions in winter. Easiest way to soften things. 51 is kind of high for poly for most people
