Pain on the side of left index finger knuckle

donnygg

Rookie
I've been having pain at the base of my left index finger on the side of my knuckle after I changed my 2HBH grip. It seems like whenever I hit a backhand, this part of my hand knocks against the handle of the racquet. It was just a little painful, like I hit a nerve but it is now visibly swollen compared to the same part of my right hand. Has anyone experienced this before? What can I do other than change my grip?

You may have strained a ligament in your index finger. This happened to me by a different cause. I
am a lefty and developed a sprain while returning serve. It took me several months for the injury to go away. I was given the green light to play through the injury, because no further damage would occur althought the healing process would take longer. However, I found I couldn't hit through the forehand ( I had no pain on any other stroke)without compensating my grip and stroke but realized I was better off taking a break since I wasn't myself on the court and I felt quite a bit of pain. I was also concerned that I would develop bad habits
In your case, I would go see a hand specialist to diagnose the injury and have a local pro look at your grip. f you are using the proper grip, the worst thing you could do is to change your grip to compensate. You will develop a bad technique which will be difficult to break.

As frustrating as it is, it may make sense to stop playing and let your finger heal. Lets not jump the gun...see the hand specialist and let a pro check out your stroke.

As said in those threads, the important thing is to take a break right away, and go see a specialist. Don't make the mistake of keep playing, too many of us had paid for it.

If the pain is really bothering you, you can take Ibuprofen to cool down the inflammation temporarily.

Also ice, ice ice! that is common sense but what the hand specialist recommended and works and feels even better than taking antinflamm drugs.
