Palermo player tests positive for That Thing

I love how the subtitle says local organizers would not name the player, but Fox News names the player in the title itself :-D

And everyone else will be fine but let's spread the fear.
The actual fact is thanks to this tournament it became known a player is asymptomatic and there will be less chance she unknowingly infects someone which potentially results in a more serious outcome .

Djokovic and that Pro Serbian basketballer were asymptomatic, and Dimitrov is in a bad way now.

Let's face it, most tennis fans are so self-absorbed that unless a player falls victim to the virus they will want the sport to resume immediately. Actually, I am not even sure that they won't ignore such an event and still insist on the tennis going on as usual.

The tennis tournament organisers have all but confirmed that they don't care and tournaments will go forward with no plans concerning the virus threat and no real responsibility if something happens.

Problem for tennis is even one case screws the entire tourney up.

No. I don't think that that is what is going to happen. The organisers don't have exact protocols because of that: to be able to make up stuff as they go along. Rest assured, any tourney with a positive case will go ahead with the exception of the player that tested positive.

But all it takes is one withdrawal to ruin it all. What happens if it is more? What happens if it happens after the 4th round? What if it is a top player?

It will ruin the slam in my opinion depending on who, when, and how many.

Withdrawals happen all the time for all sorts of reasons, so that is not the problem.

If it happens in the 4th round the guy who should have been the potential opponent in the QF gets a W/O. If you mean to say that the USO organisers have speculated that they will stop the tournament, if someone tests positive, then I am afraid that you believe people who don't care, and so they will say anything that will allow for the tournament to start in the first place. After that, well, they will find a way. Trust me, no-one is stopping a tournament that began in such conditions in the first place.

The player named in the headline is the main attraction of the tournament and not necessarily the infected one.

Marketa Vondrousova is event's main draw.

The player has been sent to an asymptomatic health facility

Interesting that there is a facility in Italy dedicated to asymptomatic patients... We do not have that here.

MLB cancelled games just 3 days into the new season, so it's not unheard of.

Is forcing 4 teams out of 30 to stop playing the same as canceling a tournament of individuals? Not exactly, but it definitely shows that it's not always full steam ahead make every buck possible at whatever the cost. So we'll see. It's going to be interesting.

Withdrawals happen due to injury. The circumstances do change how it will be viewed. Sure, a journeyman being withdrawn from a tourney in the 2nd or 3rd might not be huge.

But what if there are 5 withdrawals? What if the slam champ only has to win 5 matches? 4 matches? (Some already only need 6)

What if it happens in the SF or heaven forbid a final? What happens if it happens to a top seed? Or multiple top seeds?

You also assume they will allow players who lost to play again. USO has not came out with any protocols. Will they?

Plus, what if that guy ends up winning the slam after losing?

Now yes, this is all worst case scenario, but it would be nice to know the specific protocols if this happens.

One case probably won't be a big deal, but multiple? You have problems. Big problems.

I thought that was a bit of sarcasm from the OP.

WTF is a clinic for asymptomatic patients? Mental hospital?

Article:

Local organizers, who would not name the player, said she was admitted to a national health facility designated for asymptomatic patients

I think it includes internet connectivity and delivery menu.
Another win for TW then.

Oh, so it's a concentration camp of sorts. We had something like that here. Army brought thousands of beds to city fair, chilling stuff. Only a handful of people were actually sent there though.

Everyone is positive for that thing. Just take the test enough times, and you'll get it.
turns out that if you get tested for something and the results are positive you definitely have the thing that you got tested for

if you get tested for having 3 extra livers and the result it positive you have 3 extra livers, period

whoever came up with this scheme is an absolute genius, they got exactly what they wanted

So anybody can be told they have "tested positive" and then dragged off to friendly Bart's quarantine camp.

An authoritarian regime's dream come true!

How else do you stop people spreading the virus if they won't vaccinate?

They can stay in their home, but the maxim is you are free to do as you want as long as you don't harm others.

You are on record as saying the whole thing is a hoax, both pandemic and vaccine, so you just don't get anything to do with science!

We had 60,000 die from the 2017-2018 flu.
Yet there were no cries for mandatory vaccination.
Nobody is even aware of these deaths. No CNN death counter.
Are these lives not important to you.

According to the Italian press, a dubber also set off alarms on Thursday by presenting antibodies in a test. On social networks, complaints have been seen from tennis players and coaches about the low social distance in the tournament, when staying in a hotel open to the public and without hygienic measures in the common areas.

I haven't research this specific issue, so if you have then please do explain!

The issue is dragging asymptomatic healthy people off to quarantine camp after supposedly "testing positive".

How in the world do you not see how this power can be abused?

They give out the flu vaccine free, but making such things compulsory is tricky.

You can't force people to take a jab as it's against medical ethics. You can however exclude them from school.

The pandemic changes the situation somewhat because it does make socially isolating those not vaccinating even more urgent.

Sorry, don't get your point. Please elaborate?

The words you addressed don't mean anything, so one can interpret them whichever way one likes. I was mocking the attitude that dictates that people talk as obscurely as it gets to justify their "positions", oftentimes refusing to let even the chance to verify other scenarios other than the one they have chosen.

I was responding to someone who argued that vaccines won't solve anything because people won't get one, so my response to that was 'how else would one stop the virus'?

In short, he was arguing that a vaccine was irrelevant, whereas I thought its invention was a necessity.

How do you vaccinate if you dont have a vaccine :unsure:

This is not unheard of. In fact, we've seen even worse in the not-so-distant past.

US Open 2016: Djokovic reaches the final playing 3 full matches only (Vesely, Youzhny, and Tsonga out). Fortunately, Wawrinka was there to put an end to this charade.

Even worse, 2006 Australian Open: Mauresmo wins the whole thing after benefitting from retirements from Krajicek (Michaella, not Richard ;) ), Clijsters, and Hénin. If anything, this was maybe more of a joke than Bartoli's Wimbledon run or the last two USO wins by Nadal.

Irrelevant is the focus here my friend. If something doesnt exist, it therefore cannot be applied or speculated upon.

Not exactly my wording but hundreds of scientists that are on record saying similar things don't have anything to do with science either?

Aren't you the stupid one! The vaccine will be here by the end of the year.

There are whole government agencies gearing up to deliver it. It's perfectly intelligent to speculate on its take-up rate.
