Tomorrow, @BallBag will be playing vs. my dad for about 75 minutes indoors.

The obvious conclusion is that ballbag wins easily. However, don’t be so quick to decide...

My dad started playing tennis at age 26, reached a career high of computer rated 5.0 at age 40 and went 5-1 in singles during his best year at 5.0.

He boasts that at age 40, he was faster than my current speed now. Also, his entire life (even now) he’s played with his prince 29 inch, 130 sq inch racquet lol....

He is currently computer rated 4.5 and after watching the video of me vs. ballbag, he confidently stated he would beat either player in that video xD

I will admit, he is playing a lot better than when we last played, he’s been exercising 7 days a week, has cleaned up his eating, and plays tennis 3 times a week, should be interesting!

you must have really wanted to beat your dad. i don't know if i could cold-**** drop shot and top spin lob my 60 year old dad with the bad shoulder and probably bad knee(s) with accompanying Hewitt-esque fist pump and "COME ONNNN". you have what it takes to be a cold blooded killer, OP and I salute you.

Not sure about tomorrow, but your game looks significantly improved in the groundstroke game vid vs ballbag than in the match vs Dad.

My dad has been training intensely & athletically since age 13. He’s never stretched a single day in his life. He’s never had any serious injury, his shoulder is 100% healthy and both knees are 100% healthy.

His genetics are pretty nuts, my grandfather smoked cigs on the court and played 8 hours of singles a day up until his early 80s when he died of lung cancer...

Good battle. @BallBag ... what was that at 4:19? 8-B(y)

Papa ... s&v is a biaatch at our age. I had to give it up. Loved the Connors sky hook overhead on 1st point. If you get a rematch ... try to hit your slice 1hbh lower over net near sidelines including ros ... short is fine , and some dropshots ... BB doesn’t want to be there. ;) BB gets no more balls over the plate. Liked you took cuts with the FH ... that is how we need to play the younger wheels. Grinding is out.

Good stuff.

My dad isn’t ready to accept that he’s getting “old” :p

He got a nice reality check in this match though, hopefully it motivates him to lose the extra 20 lbs he’s carry around if he wants to compete - he’s 195 lbs at 5’9.”

He watched the video of @BallBag and I play and was 90% sure he was going to win. I had $300 on Ballbag to win in straight sets, any other outcome I would’ve lost the bet.

He doesn’t realize that playing someone in person is a lot different than watching a video of them, just like watching pros in person vs. on TV. Unless you’re right there in front of them watching, you can’t truly appreciate how amazing they are.

After the match my dad texted me, “Dennis moved a lot better and hit his forehand a lot harder than I expected.”

Not easy to change your style of play after decades. My baseline game and strokes got a lot better when s&v died ... not much choice.

Game 1 - That was some bad volleying and weak overheads by papa, but somehow pulled it through.
Game 2 - You need to watch your footfaulting @BallBag , your stepping over the line clearly alot of times giving urself an advantage, its not hard to be aware of that. Good dropshot to finish the game alltho it was not well disguised, interesting how papa didn't pick it up earlier.
Game 3 - 2:04, 2:26 looked in, overall very bad net play and net covering by papa cost him the game.
Game 4 - Good game by ballbag, 4:18 shot was beautiful.
Game 5 - Horrendous game from papa, gifted it away to the opponent who didn't have to do anything to win it.
Game 6 - After the horrendous game, the start of this game was amazing from papa, some very good shotmaking 5:35 was nice, but after he got up 40:15 he became too passive probably trying to just get the ball in and his lack of boldness cost him the game.
Game 7 - 7:01 how did he miss that? That was a won point. ballbag completely checkmated. But good game overall from papa.
Game 8 - Bad finishing from ballbag after he already build up the points so well, some failed execution, but extremely good baseline play, some nice consistent heavy spin strokes, good game overall.

Pretty good easy set win for BallBag in Set1, very inconsistent strokes from Papa, at this point it seems like BallBag is the better player, Papa getting overwhelmed by the pace and spin of shots and making a ton of errors, bad decisionmaking and bad net play and net covering. Not looking good for Papa at this point unless he somehow gets used to the spin and pace of the strokes and/or find better strategy and tactics to make it harder for Ballbag to win points.

Game 1 - Papa continuing with his ignorant and failed strategy of rushing the net after every serve even if its not well struck and completely in the strikezone of ballbag, at this point this has become so obvious that papa should have picked upon it and stay back on the baseline when the serve is hit directly in ballbag's strikezone even if ballbag has the advanatage from baseline, since he is pretty much losing every single point in this pattern of his.
Game 2 - Horrible service game from ballbag, and probably the shot of the game at 10:52, even if the risk of the shot was extremely high and the ball would go wide or into the net 9 times out of 10, but somehow the flat absolute slap with full force went in and it was a good decision to risk it at 0:40 alltho I would have probably opted for at least slightly more margin lol, but turned out amazing
Game 3 - Almost repeat from game 1, Papa continuing with his ignorant play and getting punished on several ocassions, but coming up with some extremely tough volleys that somehow went in and pulling through, but he is making his life very difficult for himself, he would have lost most games like this if not for some miracilous volleys in this particular game.
Game 4 - Papa starting to play more aggressive and less passive, punishing ballbag a few times, but his strokes are just too flat and have little margin for error, when it goes in its good but its not consistent enough to rely on.
Game 5 - First 3 points directly into ballbag's strikezone again and ignorantly rushing the net, lucky he was not down 0:40 since the 3rd shot was a pretty bad miss from ballbag who was moving sideways as he was hitting since he didnt step a bit left till the last second, 4th point he finally stayed back and won the point, 5th he did the same and unlucky the shot was a bit wide he would have won it probably on the spot or followed in up by going to the net and finishing the easy defensive shot. 6th shot was a great shot by ballbag, papa too slow to get to it simple as that.
Game 6 - Easy hold for ballbag, nothing special
Game 7 - Same old same old, papa losing every point almost when he rushes into the net after serving directly into ballbag's strikezone, and having a decent chance to win points where he opts to stay back at the baseline
Game 8 - How ironic that the last game of the match sums up the whole match so well, Papa winning many points after he stays on baseline and share baseline exchanges with ballbag, despite ballbag having the advantage serving... yet when Papa was
serving and had the advantage he opted to rush the net after serving weak serves directly into ballbag's strikezone and losing like 8 out of 10 points like that on average bar some extremely tough miracilous volleys

Overall a very ignorant match by papa, strategically and tacticaly completely inept from start to finish and uncapable of seeing the errors of his ways and changing things up.
Ballbag just played his game and won easy two sets 6:2 6:2.
Papa was overwhelmed by a better opponent, but he could have done MUCH better than he did with very poor tactics and decision making.

Yes but most of his serves are weak and directly into the strikezone, and its worse that most of them are to BB's forehand, on his backhand he is a bit less capable.
Papa lost like 90% of these points where his serve was weak and into the strikezone and he rushed the net, if only his serves were into the body or wide more he would fair better, but weak serves into the strikezones and rushing net are a recipe for passing shots or extremely hard shots into the body from BB, and it happened throughout the match.
So I agree that coming to the net would be the best strategy for Papa, but only if he served well and wide or body, not serving weak serves directly into the strikezone, he is pretty much better off staying back like that, he at least gives him a better chance to win the point like that.

Great match - congratulations both of you!

BB has a great fh. If he hits his bh with more net clearance and spin(like his fh), he can bagel former and older 5.0s.

Why was pp stuck to the service line and didn't move in for the second volley?

It appeared to me that bb was in a rush to start serving to close out the set. He didn't "cheat" to hit fh on second serves. He sliced returns back previously, but here he tried flattish 2hbh to return the serve taking the ball low instead of moving forward to hit at the top. Essentially bb stopped his feet in game 7.

I'm never in a rush to serve. I just really didn't like Papa coming in behind my slice returns and I had the scoreboard margin to try being more aggressive with the returns.

That explains...
Regarding aggression, did you notice your feet though? It wasn't coming forward. Imo, that would help a lot on returns with 2hbh.
