Parallels between 2009 and 2012

G.O.A.T.
Does anyone else feel 2012 tennis season has turned out somewhat similar to 2009 in several aspects ?

2009: 5 set AO final with Nadal pulling off a victory against Fed after a 5 setter against Verdasco in the SF
2012: 5 set AO final with Novak pulling off a victory against Nadal after a 5 setter against Murray in the SF

2009: Nadal loses early at RG to Robin Soderling and doesn't win a title for the rest of the season.
2012: Nadal loses early to Rosol at Wimbledon and doesn't win a title (doesn't play a match, actually) for the rest of the season

2009: Federer regains #1 ranking at Wimbledon breaking the slam record and completing the career slam.
2012: Federer regains #1 ranking at Wimbledon breaking the total weeks at #1 record, and winning a record 7th Wimby.

2009: A first time slam winner at USO in Delpotro
2012: A first time slam winner at USO in Murray

2009: Delpo finally beats Fed in the USO final
2012 : Delpo finally beats Fed in the Basel final (not exactly a good comparison, but Basel means a lot to Fed :) )

There may be many more, these are just off the top of my head.

In 2009, Davydenko unexpectedly went on to win the WTF , my prediction for this year is that someone like Ferrer (or Tsonga) will win the WTF :)

Federer didn't get the record 7th Wimby. He tied the record (with Sampras).

Nadal got the record 7th Roland Garros, all on his lonesome.

I doubt Ferrer or Tsonga will win the WTF this year. It's going to be either Djokovic, Federer or Murray.

2009: After being two points away from being knocked out of the FO, federer beats Haas in 5 sets and then goes onto win the title
2012: After being two points away from being knocked out of Wimby, federer beats Benneteau in 5 sets and then goes onto win the title

Good shout.

Federer wasn't 2 points away from being knocked out by Haas though, the closest Haas got was BP at 4-3 when 2 sets up, after that he got broken, Fed served for the set.

In both matches he came back from 0-2 in sets though. And both matches were after Nadal had been knocked out.

woops I don't know why I always remember it being two points away despite watching the match maybe that's because of the Benneteau match this year :-|and the events that took place after that (winning in 5, then go onto win the title)

Not on his lonesome, but...

As I can recall... in 2009 Federer came back from two sets down in two matches at two different GS.

He came back from behind at the Aussie Open to beat Berdych... then he came back to beat Haas at the French Open.

He does it again this year. Two sets down against Delpo at RG and then the already mentioned comeback at Wimbledon this year.

Not exactly the same in both years but it just shows how good Roger is when it comes to comebacks.

That's 2 superhuman aspects of Federer. He is the master of year-long stamina (even at age 30, he won 3 straight titles to finish the year), and the master of coming back from 2-sets to love down.

2012 seems more like a "comeback" year for older veteran players, too. So was 2009.

2009: Fed wins the Real Slam but wins nothing else for the rest of the season.
2012: Fed wins the Real Slam but wins nothing else for the rest of the season.

2009 : Fed def Murray and Delpo def Fed @ WTF
2012: Fed def Murray and Delpo def Fed @ WTF

2009: ND wins the WTF
2012 : ND wins the WTF

EDIT: Nevermind, took my brain a bit of time to process that one, very nice!

Yes for Federer 2009 and 2012 are very close.

- Won Wimbledon with historical significance
- Lost Basel final
- Can't win WTF

Basically it seems like in the middle of the year Fed had so much it felt like too much to handle and then he had a relatively mediocre year-end. Don't get me wrong both years are fantastic.

Davy won in 2009, ND won 2008.

Won AO 2010 after, might win AO 2013 after this Wimbledon.

differences
2009 3 grand slam champion nadal, federer and del potro
2012 4 grand slam champions djokovic, nadal, federer, murray (all top 4)

Yes, both years Nadal chickened out of tennis for substantial amounts of time after an embarrassing loss.

I was thinking about this the other day, especially in regards to Federer and Delpo.

Delpo gets rocked in Australia.
Comes close at RG.
Finishes the season 2-0 in competitive matches.

2009 - Federer sets a new record for slam wins
2012 - Federer sets a new record for slam wins

hehe!

EDIT - In fact, Federer breaks some records in 09, and Federer still breaks a few more records in 12. :)

Nadal beat Federer in AO 09
Nadal beat Federer in AO 12

Federer both times goes onto reclaim the Wimbledon title.
