Superior baseline game? His groundstrokes are more penetrating sure and he may have more endurance but he's also more like to spray errors and is also inferior as a point constructor.
You sure Raz is "inferior as a point constructor"? The guy has hell of creativity and variety with those powerful shots, searching for deep angles and executing majestic drop shots in the most unexpected moments.

Novak is more reliable in terms of avoiding unforced errors, but Raz is more offensive and makes far more winners.

Despite Djokovic hitting harder last few years, Raz hits more powerful than Novak (in fact, in all of their matches, Raz has always made more winners than Novak). That's the reality. Novak can't "blitz through Alcaraz with offense" because Novak can't overpower,Carlitos. Only Sinner can do that. And Raz' gamestyle was never that of a grinder, his shotmaking is too offensive for that. Thing with Alcaraz is that he's so complete, and his defense and velocity are spectacular, but make no mistake, that doesn't make Raz a grinder. He's an offensive baseliner and the final will not be a grinding fest.
Valid points but I meant more serve, return and first strike tennis when I meant that, not blasting winners off the ground.

By grinding, I meant Alcaraz doesn't have to really tap into his shot making potential when he can impose his physical superiority and wear Djokovic down.

Alcaraz will look to go for his shots as usual but he's also good enough to trade blows and slowly impose his stamp on the match

Djokovic has a matchup advantage over Alcaraz on clay, winning 3 of their last 4 clay sets by 1, 1 & 3. He should be the favourite in this match imo.

I won't call it a match up disadvantage for Carlos but he has trouble hitting through players when someone can go into defensive lockdown, for the same reason Carlos lost against Z and Med at slams multiple times , same problem is not on grass, he can hit through their defense easily. Moreover, no free points on non grass surfaces. It's closer than we think, Djoker can still move brilliantly, cover corners and not give free points. Let's see how Carlos deal with it or he's gonna deploy Same old tactics of outhitting his opponents?

That's why I said its matchup advantage for Djokovic, the Serb has an upper hand.

As compared to current Djokovic, yes I feel Alcaraz has the superior baseline game.

The errors part is where slow clay is going to help him. Alcaraz doens't have to go for broke or winners when his ground strokes are quite heavy and he can move Djokovic around till he gets an opening.

Even when compared to last year, Alcaraz plays a lot more high percentage and has toned down on the go for broke attempts

Can you explain the matchup advantage that Djokovic has here though ? The breadsticks were against a clearly compromised Alcaraz too
He is more consistent from the ground while Alcaraz is erratic in long rallies at times.
Djokovic's defence is still elite and it would suffocate Alcaraz, because he can't hit through the Serb that easily on clay.
Djokovic can redirect shots more effectively as he'd have more time, so he can take the Spaniard's legs out more easily. Just look at the way he was making Alcaraz run like a rabbit in the first 2 sets of RG 2023 SF; even before the cramps started.

I don't think Djokovic will even win a set. Will be happy if he does, however. But a silver is guaranteed and that's still a pretty big achievement.

About 13% think Djokovic will win in the TTW poll. Is that the lowest in any match he has played since 2011? I guess no one considers him as the real top seed in this tournament.

A silver medal a year after the end of the inflation era would be laudable and something to be proud of. Assuming there’s anything at all going on with his medial meniscus (or anything surrounding his knee), avoiding injury at this point in his career heading into the USO would be good for him, esp. how he will probably give it his all for the gold. He better be careful out there before a wolf really does show up.

It's best of 3, just like it was in 2021.

From the ITF site for the 2024 Olympics.

As with most tournaments, Olympic tennis is a knockout competition. All matches are played best of three sets except the men’s singles and doubles finals, which are best of five. In all four divisions, the semi-final winners play to decide the gold and silver medals, and the semi-final losers play for the bronze.

Best of 3 for all singles matches, including the final. Page 41 https://www.itftennis.com/media/109...ennis-event-regulations-final-31-aug-2023.pdf

It would be pretty funny to have a best of 5 doubles final considering they didn't even play a 3rd set all tournament long, just a TB.

Not that I want to read the 178,235 threads that will be generated by Djokovic fans if he wins, but as it is his last, best chance… I’m kind of pulling for him.
I thought Djokovic is aiming for 30 majors and will stay active till his mid 40s or however long it takes to reach his goal. He can't risk having Alcaraz pass him in the next 10-15 years.

Blame certain people being extremely desperate to save the crumbling mens' tour by trying to exercise a savior complex through Alcaraz.

Is there a chance of Djokovic retiring if he wins the OG? That would be great. Much better than him lingering on Tour until the next Games trying to win the elusive gold. B3 era has to go for good. So while I want Alcaraz to win, there is a positive to hope for if he doesn't.

why does he have to retire? I would much prefer he stays for one more year, he can focus on slams and play a few prep tournaments.

Djokovic v Alcaraz = The two GOATs of this sport.

Their rivalry only is meant to last a very small time, but in that time we have had some big matches between them. This is their seventh match, yet another big match.

They have now played each other in a slam, a masters, a YEC and an Olympic event.

Two of the best to ever do it make history together again.

My feeling is that Nole will leave everything on the court to finally win the only trophy that eluded his sensational career, even if it means the end of his playing career, so my pick is Nole in 3.

Carlos deserves to be a favorite because of the level he's been showing for months now and him winning will not be a surprise, but this time I believe in Nole. Let's go Serbia!!

Novak will be ready to go and die if he has to tomorrow. Watch out.
