Did he ever use the R-50 that he endorsed? I had that frame for about 8 months, until it sheared at the throat in a framed overhead.

Yes, Pat used th R-50 before the switch to the RQ-180
I also heard a lot of stories back in the day of R-22’s breaking on framed overheads too
