Pat Cash calls Fed out. LMAO @ Fed "Wawrinka took an MTO, so I took one"

According to a report in Sydney Morning Herald, Cash stated: “It’s cheating and it’s being allowed. It’s legal cheating but it’s still not right.”

It wasn’t like the time-out created instant magic for Federer as he failed to hold on to his initial serve in the fifth set to allow Nadal an early break.

Federer said "After he (Wawrinka) took a medical time-out, I thought I could also take one for a change and see if actually something like a massage during the match is actually going to help me. It did a little bit potentially. I’m not sure.”

Just because it's Fed, worshippers are defending him. Anyone else would be put on the stake by the herd.

Taking MTOs right before the fifth set in consecutive matches. Mockery lol

He got down 0-2 in that last set against Rafa pretty quickly, so I'm not sure how much that MTO really helped Fed...

The point is that he thought it would help him. Regardless, how many MTOs has Nadal taken in GS finals? At least 3 that I can remember.

Funny how Pat said what Roger did was "legal cheating" but made no mention of Rafa continually exceeding the 25 seconds between points rule.

It did seem to me that Nadal was taking less time between serves in the final. I guess that time violation in the semis was on his mind. Interesting that when Rafa has to play more by the rules he can't dominate.

The question is why didn't Nadal take the MTO when he needed it most. He was slowing down in the fifth set, which gave Fed the golden opportunity to break twice.

My favorite thing is all the Nadal fans bagging on Fed taking the MTOs. Pot, meet kettle.

Rafa also left the court after the first set. It wasn't technically an MTO, but it was an extended break likely taken intentionally to disrupt momentum.

Both guys operated well within the rules on this, just like Stan and Fed each took one MTO in their SF match. I don't understand why this is a thing. Had Fed taken an MTO down 3-1 in the 5th? OK, that would be a thing. But he didn't. He left the court, immediately got broken and had zero momentum. Not sure why this is still a thing.

Funny this logic only works for Federer.

Lmao he got his massage or something. As a result was fresher later in the 5th
It's BS and you know it. That was like Federer's 4th or 5th MTO in his career, he's the last player on tour you can accuse of cheating thanks to MTO. You listened to his interviews after he won? He said that his body is a wreckage now.

He literally just copied what Nadal and Djokovic have been doing for years to even the playing field vs them. He even had the decency and class to do it between sets, rather than at 5-2 down like "ahem" some.

Pat Cash is a loser / idiot and I doubt Fed cares what he thinks.

I've got bad news for Pat Cash and the OP: Federer is the greatest of all time and the only number that matters are slams won, not MTOs taken.

No one who matters will remember this meaningless line of thinking.

My favorite thing is all the Federer fans defending Fed for taking the MTOs, when they're ready to prosecute any other player every time. Pot, meet kettle.
Is this factually something unique about Fed fans? Or is that just an opinion and unfounded insinuation?

Are you first in line to try and direct this kind of criticism towards RAFA and his fans? If not, pot, meet kettle.

I'm a Fed fan and I agree that it didn't look quite champion-like when he took consecutive MTOs before the 5th set in his matches against Wawrinka and Nadal. But I think he gave perfectly valid medical reasons relating to his quads and groin pain in the final after-match conference when he was confronted with the Pat Cash accusation. Also, we should cut the old geezer some slack; it was most likely the last Grand Slam final between him and his greatest rival. It's not like he's been abusing MTOs his entire career.

Does hit legs need the MTO? Yes. Do the rules allow MTO? Yes. So he took it, and it may helped him, and he won his 18th Gland Slam!

Did Nadal need the MTO during his AO final with Wawa? Yes. He used it. He lost. And now he still at 14.

MTO may or may not help, who care. The end result is who lift the trophy.

because other players do it at suspicious times such as when their opponent is up a break and serving. Between sets, it's really not that big a deal. Down a break right before your opponent serves you get a timeout to tape your foot...little different story. Unless you are really suffering and cannot play close to your level, there is no justification for a medical timeout with that kind of timing.

Either way all MTOs are within the rules obviously but some seem to have different purposes from others.

Its very interesting, Federer is a stage of his career where he would like to use all possible 'legal' means to help his cause. 5 years ago, he would have been all 'politically correct' about MTOs and stuff. Now, he is a bit like a Jimmy Connors, who fired up the crowd's imagination during his extraordinary 1991 USO run. What's he got to lose anyway ? Every GS appearance this year will be like a farewell one, and the organizers will be only too willing to play it up. So lets not get into all this, as long he is not doping. Federer has achieved far more than Pat 'Flash' (-in-the-pan').

I don't think anyone cares what Pat Cash thinks except agitators on TT... comments from Rafter and maybe Hewitt I would bother to read...but Cash???

Bathroom break, not MTO. However Nadal took MTO in 2007 Wimby final, 2011 FO Final, 2014 AO final. Always when losing! Roger took his when tied in the match, so not the same.

id love to know how many MTOs roger has taken his entire career, id say less than 10...pathetic novak took one to get his pinky toe wrapped down 2-5 in the 4th set against stan at the uso...u gotta see the difference here roger doesnt play games like that

Remember Roger in his post-match interviews. Said he learned a lot from playing Rafa and that it made him a better player. So the strategic MTO should fall in that line of thinking too.

This is most annoying topic ever.Until they don't change rules no one is cheating.They are just bending rules in their favor.Why is this even an issue.Should I blame Nadal 2002 cause he pointed at net when Djokovic touched it or when he refused to allow court to be sprinkled with water.No man.It's a gamesmanship and if Djokovic got messed up because of that more credit to Rafa.Just stupidity of people who believe in purity of the sports

2005 - AO semis vs Safin, YEC final vs Nalbandian
2007 - Indian Wells R64 vs Canas
2008 - Masters Cup RR vs Murray
2012 - Wimbledon R16 vs Malisse
2017 - AO semis & final

That's 7 in total. Nadal takes that many in a year. Nishikori takes about 30 per year.

exactly, its not "legal cheating" and he doesnt abuse it or do it to ice the server when he's serving for the match or when he's losing there are clear differences between him nadal nishikori or anyone else

Just because it didn't work immediately, doesn't make it legitimate
If he did have a leg issue, then that DOES make it legitimate. He had already spoken of it.

If it was only to break momentum, then yes, it was a totally unclassy thing to do.

You are straight off assuming the worst. He also took both MTO's during a set break. In the final, he was serving after the break, and it's usually an unwritten rule that one should not take it before the other person's serve.

Even way back in the AO 2010 semifinal he took a toilet break after set completion for which you guys are still grilling him.

Anyway, my basic point is, what if he does have a leg issue ?

I find it ironic how hard it is for Nadal fans to digest this, considering how many Nadal has taken, and often during sets, and before the opponents serve. And he has done this to Federer, too. So its a bit like the pot calling the kettle black, no ?

EDIT: Yeah, what i don't like is how nonchalant he was about it. He could at least have limped around a bit, and clutched his groin (Sir Andy like), LOL. Some drama to make it convincing, LOL. He even joked about that toilet break in the Davydenko match.

Fed took at least 5 MTOs from 2003 through 2008. And that's not all.

Fed's MTOs from 2003 through 2008, after he fell behind (source: the Oregonian; I'm not sure this list includes all his MTO during that period):
- in the first set of the Wimbledon 2003 4th round against Feliziano Lopez after being down a break after the second game; he needed a back massage;
- in the fifth set of the Australian Open 2005 semifinal against Marat Safin after he fell behind in the set; he needed a back massage;
- in the fifth set of the Masters Cup 2005 final against David Nalbandian after he fell behind in the fifth set; he needed a leg massage;
- in the second set, down a set and a break, in the second round of Indian Wells in 2007 against Guillermo Canas to have his foot blisters retaped;
- in the third set of a round robin match at the 2008 Masters Cup against Andy Murray, after being down a break; he needed a back massage.

It really didn't though, I counted him above 30 and 35 plenty of times on the important points. 40 even.
