I thought this was interesting that Pat Cash played a total of 17 matches against Lendl (8) and Wilander (9), with 11 of the matches being at Grand Slams. I think it is impressive that Cash went 7-4 against Lendl and Wilander in Grand Slams against the two most successful players of the 1980s.

Mc was more succesful than Mats
anyway good thread
Cash was beating Wilander at majors as soon as 1983
It took him a bit longer besting Ivan

Cash was a bit of a bogeyman for Lendl though.

I think he was the only man to beat Lendl in the five slams played between the AO 1987 - AO 1988.

I always thought having seen Cash live a few times that he was undone by technology in the same way McEnroe was. He had much more potential if the game stayed to grass and played with wood. The extra time he'd have to get to net and his good touch where nullified by the new power game though Edberg did ok in the era.

I agree. Edberg had a much better serve than Cash, for that era. Not to mention that Edberg's movement was more efforless. Cash was a lot like Rafter - lots of hard work in that attacking game.

Cash has a 3-5 h2h with Lendl.

All three of Cash's wins come in majors, one being the Wimbers finals.

Also interesting, is that two of Lendl's wins are on grass--his worst surface, IMO.

I 'm always saddened as an Australian that his career was cut short by a ruptured Achilles' tendon. No way back to elite sport centred around agility after that.

Just watch 2014 Cash v Lendl, I feel really bad, Cash is 8-9 years my senior and a hell of a lot better shape, even beefy for a tennis player. Lendl has breasts but they shrinking from two years ago, he'll be an A cup next year if he keeps training. His shots are still slick and heavy but he needs tolose weight for the Masters series.

The difference was that Cash and Wilander met lots of times as juniors and each knew each other´s game, so that Cash never felt intimidated by Mats.

But with Lendl it was just a complete new thing for the rookie pro.He needed time to cope on with the czech´s game but he became very dangerous for Ivan later on.

And, of course, their mutual disliking fired him up.

Cash could be very cooky, having been raised up in the very tough world of Australian Rules football.

I do still recall when he played that Wimbledon semi against the undisputed world´s nº 1 John Mc Enroe. He was a rookie that year but made both, Wimbly and Flushing last four.

In one of the changeovers, it was him¡¡¡ who tried to intimidate John.Gave him a big shoulder bump when they were going back to court.Remember that? pure Australian Rules.
