Patrick Mouratoglou discussed impact of Serena Williams : "SHE CHANGED TENNIS"

Serena is a level higher in power then hingis/navratilova.
Graf in old age would have had no chance, it would have been a bloodbath.

Considering that Serena in the 00s lost to Likhovtseva, Craybas, Hantuchova, Srebotnik, Jankovic, Kuznetsova and four times to Capriati (!) in slams I think it would have been the Compton girl's blood which would have been spilled.
Steffi was far to quick for Serena and her slice would have driven Serena nuts.
OK, Serena might have won 30 % of their matches (comparable to Seles, Sabatini types) but that's it. She was far to inconsistent in the 00s. Found her groove only in the 2010s when all big opponents were gone.

Patrick Mouratoglou has discussed the impact that Serena Williams has had upon tennis as she celebrated her 40th birthday this past weekend.

Mouratoglou believes that both Serena and her sister Venus not only changed it on the court but also from a commercial angle as well.

“She changed tennis,”
he told Agence France-Presse.

“She brought an athletic dimension that there was not there at all, she opened the doors, with her sister Venus, to a whole generation of players because it was a white sport.

She invented tennis intimidation because she has a presence that makes others fear her. For a very long time, it was impressive.

“She also brought the business to women’s tennis. Before her, the business was very small and with her it became huge because she has such an aura, she has become such a marketing object, too, that huge contracts are possible for the players.”

Did he by any chance mention her serve AT ALL? Makes me wonder just what kind of tennis coach is he.

She certainly made one lineswoman fear her for sure with the image of having a tennis ball rammed down her throat which would have, most likely, resulted in asphyxiation .

This is facts.

can't name any black women's tennis players before the Williams sisters, at all. Zina Garrison, maybe?

but it wasn't about their race, peak Serena is the most dominant athlete in comparison to the field ever. men's or womens. She was scary in a way no one else could be.

This is not facts.

Weren't Hingis and Kournikova rockstars in the late 90s before the Williams' really broke out? I mean having a GOAT level player be American certainly helped there but Anna K + Hingis deserve as much credit as the Williams do.
Exactly, and then Sharapova came, glamourised the game, earned twice as much off court than Serena on court, and every girl wanted to be like her.

Serena Williams’ GOAT Status Is Up For Debate, Says Martina Navratilova

Serena Williams may be the GOAT of women’s tennis in the eyes of many.

But Martina Navratilova says there’s room for debate.

“If you just go on majors, then you have Serena,” Navratilova said Monday on a Tennis Channel conference call when I asked her thoughts on the matter. “If you go a different way, then it would be me or Steffi Graf, perhaps Margaret Court. It just depends how you want to measure that.

“But I think Serena just wants that record [of 24 Grand Slam titles] regardless of any GOAT status. For her it's about that number. Now she's got a great chance with the U.S. Open with a smaller field obviously.”

For the record, Court leads the all-time list with 24 majors, followed by Serena’s 23 and Graf’s 22. Helen Wills Moody won 19. Navratilova and arch-rival Chrissie Evert each captured 18. It should also be pointed out that Navratilova, who will help anchor Tennis Channel’s U.S. Open coverage, has won more tennis titles than anyone — man or woman — in history.

"....then it would be me or Steffi Graf, perhaps Margaret Court."

So Navratilova is undecided.
Steffi declares Navratilova the GOAT.
Court thinks Steffi is the GOAT.
Evert says whatever her TV masters want from her (currently pro Serena).
Serena knows Steffi is the GOAT (because why else would she want to reach 24)?
Fans mostly are on Steffi's side.

What a mess!

Forget Steffi

Navratilova considers herself the GOAT or Serena

// Serena knows Steffi is the GOAT (because why else would she want to reach 24)? //

Serena is already ahead of Steffi, why will she bother whether she reaches 24 or not for Steffi, she is already ahead

LOL

Navratilova considers herself the GOAT

Considering she is by far the most egotistical of the top tier all time greats, man or women, that is a pretty safe bet. She might not say it as directly anymore, since even she knows it is a bad look, but 200% she thinks that, and that it is not even a contest, LOL!

Yes, GOAT Race IMO is between Serena nd Navratilova

Both of them are ahead of the other ladies

What about "...it would be me or Steffi Graf, perhaps Margaret Court" didn't reach your brain?

She mentioned court too, did it not reach your brain old man?

She put herself first in the sentence, that means she considers herself the frontrunner and for a good reason.

Why has grandma Serena been torturing herself for more than three years, neglecting her family, just to break Court's 24 slam record?
To be greater than COURT...??
:-D :-D :-D

It is between Graf and Court.

Tier one ATGs:
Graf (GER) - 22 slams, 1 Golden Slam, 89.3 % (winning percentage)
Court (AUS) - 24 slams, 1 Grand Slam, 91.5 %

Tier two ATGs:
Navratilova (USA) - 18 slams, zero Golden/Grand Slams, 86.8 %
S. Williams (USA) - 23 slams, zero Golden/Grand Slams, 84.9 %
Evert (USA) - 18 slams, zero Golden/Grand Slams, 90.0 %

The discussion about the greatest US player ever is far more interesting, IMO.
I would give the nod to Williams, but maybe you have a different opinion?

Graff is tier 2 along with seles
Serena, Martina are tier 1

Tennis fans all over the world have a different view - they generally vote for Steffi Graf. The records, the grace, the beauty, the charisma! It is simply an irresistible package. Emma Raducanu could emulate her one day.

Navratilova considers herself 1 (she mentioned herself first in the sentence, plus we know how he mind works)
Graf is pretty much limited to the 90s and Seles controversy has removed her from the picture.
Serena is pretty much in the lead now, even in poll and websites they all put Serena at 1.

Four GOAT polls from the last three years:

US tennis fans voted for Steffi Graf as “greatest of all time“ at “tennis.com“ (November 2018):

Steffi beat Navratilova and S. Williams in an Italian GOAT poll (“Gazzetta di Parma“, July 2018):
https://gazzafun.gazzettadiparma.it/item/2018-07-14-steffo-serena-williams-vota-la-miglior-tennista-di-sempre

“The Guardian“ (UK) readers voted for Steffi Graf as GOAT, giving her nearly twice as many votes as any other player (July 2020):

Austrian tennis website „tennisnet.com“ asked 29 experts and they overwhelmingly voted for Steffi Graf as GOAT (December 2020):

Serena (and her father) definitely brought victimhood to the game.

“She brought an athletic dimension that there was not there at all, she opened the doors, with her sister Venus, to a whole generation of players because it was a white sport.

Well she did prove that with a serve and enough power you can be obese and at the top level of the WTA. I'm not sure how this has anything to do with race.

“She also brought the business to women’s tennis. Before her, the business was very small and with her it became huge because she has such an aura, she has become such a marketing object, too, that huge contracts are possible for the players.”

Lol this guy srsly never hear of Kournikova?

In her heyday Steffi was regularly among the top 20 top-earning sportspersons - male or female. And this even though she denied many offers because she didn't want to spend to much of her time with company CEOs, video producers (for commercials), photographers, marketing guys, shop openings. IMG is on record criticizing Steffi's marketing firm that one could make "at least double the money" with Steffi if she only were to be marketed properly.

I don't think Kournikova or Serena ever were among the top 20.

Since the pot of endorsement money has generally (men and women) grown massively in the last 30 years (new markets in emerging countries, more wealth in the developed countries) Serena has of course made more money than Steffi (even if adjusted for money).

Young people of today have no idea how famous Steffi was world-wide 30 years ago even among non-sports-fans.
It is no joke - she really said she could not go shopping anywhere in the world without being recognized by fans.

Serena has remained in the top 20 top earning sportsperson list longer than Steffi

Yeah, Hingis has some fanatics as well, I agree

@Jason Swerve rates Hingis as the best and calls her Martinka
Hingis is not an average player by any stretch, and I wouldn't make that claim on my worst day. At this point, you don't have to reach for Hingis. Any Top 20 player, 20 years back would be snatching up slams today.

How???

Evolution is not moving backwards.
