World of Goo is releasing on the PC and WiiWare on Monday. I pre-ordered this game a while back on hearing some ravings from some people in the gaming industry.
They sent the game out early to those of us who pre-ordered, and I have to say, this is one of the best and most original puzzler games since Lemmings.
It's basically a physics based puzzler. Your tools are "goo balls", and you form structures by piecing them together, with the goal of reaching a pipe (perhaps in the sky, across a large gap, etc.).
Everyone who has written on the game has expressed high opinions of the game. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/09/29/world-exclusive-world-of-goo-review/ and http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=249671 are the two reviews that have been published thus far.
Thoughts on the game:
1.) Music. Not the sort of thing you think of when considering a puzzler, but the music in this game is wonderful. http://vimeo.com/1870125 has one of the tracks, as well as some clips of gameplay.
2.) Gameplay. In many puzzlers, the standard progression of the game involves ramping up the difficulty, and the game can get stale pretty quickly. This is not the case in World of Goo. The creativity in this game is absolutely wonderful. Every single level seems to introduce a new form of goo, a new obstacle, or requires a new use of the goo in order to get through the level. The game keeps you thinking, but never really gets too difficult. This is constant throughout the game.
3.) Non-gameplay issues: The presentation is wonderful. There is no copy protection; I was simply sent a link in an email for the .exe file of the game, with a request not to distribute it. It will run on a wide variety of computers, including through VMWare or other emulation of Windows from other operating systems... And when it is released on Mac and Linux, you will be able to use the same purchase to use those versions as well.
This game is shaping up to be a contender for Game Of The Year, and will go down as a classic along the likes of Lemmings. I would highly recommend looking into it this Monday. It's $20 on the PC, $15 on WiiWare.
