Hewitt was a better player mainly because he holds court position so much better, and he knew how to move forward. Med might win head to head though. All of Hewitts best matchups are attacking players he blunted with his ROS and retrieval skills. He didn’t do nearly as well against other consistent baseliners.

Of course it's an evolution. If a player doesn't miss from the back of the court and moves great, they're a nightmare to play just for that alone. If they can also serve 130-140mph consistently, with the height to create tricky angles and trajectories, then that becomes a much bigger nightmare.
Dude, occasionally there are some threads from the yesteryears bumped in here, threads as late of 2014-15 for example, in which you are seeing posters (Fedfans) claiming with absolute confidence and utter certainty that Hewitt and Roddick are better than Djokovic on grass for example, or they are better on fast courts, and you think to yourself how... why...what the hell... Well all I can say, good luck reasoning with some of those guys. LOL8-B

Lol. Hewitt had a hall of fame career by the time he was Meddy current age. Hewitt would make Meddy look like a mental scrub. What is going on here? This place has lost its mind :-D  :giggle:

This is ridiculous. I wonder what you are smoking.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe no player under 183cm has won a slam since Gaudio in 2004.

Slam winners since then in order of height:

1) Cilic/Delpo
2) Safin
3) Murray
4) Djokovic
5) Federer/Nadal/Thiem
6) Wawrinka

The smallest slam winners in the last 17 years are Wawrinka + Federer/Nadal/Thiem. These are all guys with unbelievable offensive power and great defence. The game has changed.
So do ya know how many slam champions in 90s were under 180 cm? 0. There were few 5'11 guys like Agassi, muster, but no player was under 5'11.
Which match's better?

cmon man. hewitt was a glorified pusher than vultured 2 slams in a very weak era. medvedev is a better player for sure. peak to peak isnt a fair comparison.
Djoko stooge glorifying Med to make it look like a virual strong era which it isn't.

Med himself is a pusher who has achieved very less compared to hewitt at his present age

Exactly. I posted a clip of Agassi handing peak Hewitt his *** at USO.
Hewitt helped usher in baseline tennis but his best win will always be a beat down of aging Pete at USO.
I just don’t see weapons that could hurt a guy like Medvedev.

Peak Hewitt DESTROYED peak PETE ROFLMAO :-D

Observations:
Rallies are much more demanding now and involve MUCH more running and lateral movement.
Rally speeds and spins much better now than in 2004 (statisticsdemonstrate this). RPM much higher, so a shorter guy like Hewitt would have serious problems with Nadal or Thiem’s RPM.

The ignorance. Hewitt was up a break in each of the first two sets but served poorly. He did not get his ass handed to him, if anything Agassi was lucky he got Hewitt on one of the few days he didn't handle the pressure well. The only thing Medvedev does better is the serve but even then he returns from so far back he minimises any advantage he might get on return...

There is literally nothing that Hewitt was doing better than Medvedev is doing it now. Medvedev is basically 20 centimetres higher version of Hewitt. He is bigger, faster, stronger, defends better, better groundstrokes, better at counterpunching, better at everything. And this thread has huge bumping potential, and some of the posters could be ridiculed with no end by some future generations of TTW posters. Lol
Based on what? Eye test?

Would you give Med of the USO 19 final a set vs Hewitt of the USO 01 final?

Agassi barely moving. The movement not comparable to today’s game. Agassi himself would admit it.

 "barely moving" nice exaggeration (y) Level of ballstriking from both is on another planet to Medvedev, both guys taking the ball early up on the baseline. If Hewitt was hitting his balls from the stands maybe Agassi would have time to reach more....

Hewitt definitely. More mentally stronger and better all round game. Medvedev needs to win some slams before this is a discussion.

Exactly. I think the RPM is the biggest factor here. Heavy topspin is a nightmare for shorter guys.

In fairness to Hewitt, I started watching in 2007, and Hewitt was NEVER a factor, just some washed up guy basically. I see him as basically a Ferrer or Nishikori type player. Very good overall but not elite.

Should have started and left it here.

Yeah, I think a lot of people are not taking into accounts this is a H2H question. Anyway, this is very hard to judge, but it should be a tight affair on hard and maybe clay, and Hewitt should have a huge advantage on grass.

Achievement-wise they are not comparable, but Medvedev should have a long career in front of him still.

Hewitt never impressed me once. He could never compete with Big 3 at highest levels. Basically Ferrer.

Sheer ignorance. Hewitt was a different player after 2005, two years berfore you started watching lol. Not like Medvedev can compete, he gets thumped by older and worse Big 3...

Lol. Hewitts games won on HC% 2003/2004 was above 60%, thats ATG level. None of the NextGens has managed to get there.
quite impressive considering his 2003 season was a mess overall for his standards. Shows how consistent he was in 2004 I think.

He beat Nadal and Djokovic at last WTF.
No need to insult me for “ignorance.” Hewitt has done nothing to impress me despite being in his twenties when I began watching the game. He could never compete with top playersfor a reason.

That reason was, ahem, extreme bad luck with injuries.
06/07/09/13/14 - entered between 15-20 seasons and basically had a near full season each year.

He had injuries but the game passed him by. The average height of the tour went up and midget guys like Hewitt started to become overpowered.

You need to educate yourself. I can't help you with takes like this. Hewitt has beaten Federer and Sampras at the YEC BTW.

Never thought about this metric, so I went and did some quick research. Turned out to be exactly 60% in both 2003 and 2004 for Hewitt.

Medvedev has won 59.1% games on HC in the last 52 weeks, so almost the same! Medvedev has also won 84.9% of his hard-court matches in this same period!

Zverev is also not too far behind with 56.4% of games on HC and over 77% matches win on HC in the same period!. The next-gen is closing in. It's only the Slams that they are lagging behind but it is coming soon.
