Peak Murray

Murray playing at his very best is underrated, I think mainly because he did not play at his peak TO WIN A SLAM.

I did not think that he played his best at Wimbledon 2013, but played much closer to his peak at Olympics 2012 and Wimbledon 2012. It was just the opponents he was playing in the finals.

Also, I did not think that he played his absolute best at USO 2012, but played his peak level against Nadal in USO 2008 (then got nervous and tired against Federer in the final).

Murray's peak I thought was at AO 2012, USO 2008, and W 2012.

Thoughts?

Peak Murray?

No thoughts!

Seriously, I think 2012 was Murray's peak. He was playing really well from AO through to USO.

Murray's peak was between W2012 and W2013. He was the best player in the world in this period (two slams, two extra finals, olympic gold) which was the golden era in tennis—as such, his level here was probably the highest ever displayed in tennis.

Quoted for truth.

Canada and shanghai 2010. Olympics 2012.

The thing about Murray's peak is when he is on it it's a thing of beauty, but he can't sustain it for even a whole match . His focus drifts especially when he misses an easy shot.

The last match at Wimbledon with Nadal is the prime example of his Achilles heel. Battering Nadal then one missed easy shot, and he goes missing for the next 40 mins and loses pitifully. Twice in the final at Australia he gets distracted.

Also, to add, such a shame that injuries cut this amazing level short. To think of the level of domination he could have achieved...

Deep within you know it's true though. That straight-setting of Novak and Fred back to back at the olympics: grass tennis reaching heights never seen before.

Peak Murray is an absolute treat to watch. A lot of people give hims stick for being a "pusher" (which he is not), or just boringly defensive in general, but when he really commits he can be aggressive and his backhand starts doing damage. His peak play is not really bunched together. For instance, here are 3 matches where we saw peak Murray:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tqB7j_7h1c (vs Federer, Shanghai 2010)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INUnajp6e8c (vs Nadal, US Open 2008)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLc4dL80VVU (vs Nadal, Tokyo 2011)

Shame, I thought you were stronger than that. Stay on this forum long enough and even the strongest men start to believe anything.

Yeah, 2014 was a real bummer. Just like Fed's 2013. After the nice run in 2012, I was looking forward to world domination, but alas.

The good thing is that Murray appears to have rebounded nicely and is still relatively young. Hopefully, he can still have a nice run.

I enjoyed watching peak Murray put in stellar efforts in the 2012 and 2013 Wimbledon finals as well as the 2012 US Open final.

I agree. And would also add in AO2010. He played fantastically there.

One could say it louder but not clearer.

YES. So much power on the backhand back then. I wonder what took him to change his style in 2012.
Could it be the Lendl legacy?

2012 through 2013 saw the best Murray result-wise, but IMO not at all his best tennis.

Between August 2012 and July 2013, he went 3-1 against Federer (1-0 in GS), 3-3 against Djokovic (2-1 in GS).

But at what cost to his scintillating attacking tennis of 2008-2011...
