Say what you want about nadal and goat hood.

Fact of the matter is that right in the middle of nadal's peak, he got owned by the Serbian machine.

7 big finals across all 3 surfaces.

Has this ever happened to a supposed goat candidate ?

How can you be in the discussion of goatness when clearly there is a guy whose best is better than yours?

Will nadal ever be able to live that one down?

Getting his heart ripped and the number one ranking taken away at his peak in the cathedral of tennis

Telling the whole world that he can't handle peak djokovic and simply has to wait for nole to drop a level or two.

Make no mistake. That's exactly what happened. Unfortunate deaths and burnout.

Goat candidate ? How?

Better career ? Yes
Better player ? No

Unfortunately Nadal has to be an eternal bridesmaid. His career was sandwiched between a player who was ruthless against the field and another player who is ruthless with him.

Peak Ralph can't even beat Novak 1.0 at WTF even with clown opponents in RR and 32erer in SF. :lol:

I have no idea, but why does it matter? That Nadal was able to overcome that and ultimately turn the rivalry back in his favor shows great mental strength. There are not any eliminators in GOAT discussions. It is based on what you have done, not what you have not done.

I am not saying that Nadal is the GOAT, personally I do not think he is in the discussion quite yet, but he is getting close. It is not a good argument to pick some random stat that makes a player look bad and say that because of that they cannot be a GOAT candidate. It is based on what they actually do accomplish, and Nadal has accomplished a lot so far.

He already has "lived it down" by turning the rivalry in his favor and winning many important matches against Djokovic in the past 2 years.

Getting his heart ripped and the number one ranking taken away at his peak in the cathedral of tennis

And yet he was able to come back stronger and win it back.

How is he an eternal bridesmaid when he ripped #1 away from Fed in 2008 and 2010 and wrestled it away from Novak this year?

Funny that he is leading the H2H against Novak as well...so much for not being able to handle peak Djokovic.

There is still time for Djokovic to turn it around again and get the better of Nadal in the Grand Slams, but he is likely too far behind at his age to make a serious run at GOAT himself.

True, the irony is that the very things Ralph fans accused Fed of, has happened with Ralph too. :(

Personally, I'd look at overall achievements and not rivalries. At present, Fed and Nadal stand way ahead of Nole. But these arguments are fun to give back what Ralphans keep dishing others :)

don't get carried away old sport.

#1 rank is not really all that important.

its about the slams.

also last time I checked, they were still playing tennis on clay.

A bridesmaid with 13 slams(4 away from the all time record) and three year end nr.1's. You should be banned for uttering such stupidity on these boards.

Oh, and the player who is ruthless with him still trails in the h2h, 22-17. Since Djoko went super sayan in 2011, their h2h is 10-6 for Djoko, with 8 of these matches being on HC, 7 on clay and one on grass. In that time period, their H2H in slams is 3-3.

Djokovic at his best did thrash Nadal at his best for a good year or so, but to be completely fair, you can't look at just one year. Peak play is important, sure, but its not everything. By that logic some could argue that Nalbandian is the greatest ever based purely on peak play. Or maybe its Safin or Del Po or Tsonga or someone we've never heard of.

Federer's the greatest because he sustained such a ridiculous level over 4 years and even afterwards was still a force to be reckoned with. So while Djokovic's best > Nadal's best, Nadal overall > Djokovic overall.

Maybe in the next year or two we can get a good idea of who's generally the better player since recently its been all about momentum between those two.

42 of Nadal's 60 tournament wins were on a clay surface.

8 of Nadal's 13 grand slam wins were on a clay surface.

Nadal = Clay Court GOAT
Federer = All-Surface GOAT
