Let's continue speaking up, posters, and come together hoping that Peng Shuai is safe. Words have power:

Serena: Osaka: Wawrinka: Mahut: Mouratoglou: & Many more

Please comment to send your support.

Moderators: With all due respect, this is one of the most important stories in our sport. The aim of this thread is for people to send their support and make a difference, however small.

Thanks for continuing the threads, glad the mods didn’t delete the last one but it was locked so it just fades away and we can’t let that happen here.

Great to see Serena and Stan add their names to the list of people utterly concerned by what is happening. This is getting scarier as it drags on and we don’t hear anything from Peng Shuai.

The WTA did an amazing and brave move to comment on this multiple times and most recently threaten future Chinese tournaments. Players calling this out is huge and eventually news will trickle into China that the world is upset and concerned over a beloved tennis player. The China Open and Wuhan Open are huge on the WTA tour and then the ATP have Shanghai and Beijing. Has the ATP commented yet?

Respect to the WTA.

I fear that international condemnation and boycotts are potentially the only way this is going to be resolved unless Peng ends up confined for a few months like some other citizens have been. Obviously myself and many others are concerned this has already gone beyond that.
It's good to see the top stars speaking out now, and hopefully now Osaka, Stan and Serena have it opens the floodgates on this dialogue. I appreciate players have sponsors and public images. Some may feel they need to understand the situation more but I think both the WTA, ATP and their players need to combine in this instance.
I've been keeping track of the ATP Finals and WTA YEC but this story for me regarding one of my favourite players is of most interest to me and I'll continue to express my concern and support for her.

Bigger names have disappeared for periods of time in China and after few months appeared back in public deeply sorry for their actions that go against Chinese values, though no one really crossed the line the way she did, by accusing pretty much the system by naming one of the top officials.

Would like to see more high profile athletes and players add their names.
Nadal, Federer, Barty, Halep, Muguruza.
Anyone with a platform has power here. This all started with next to nobody discussing it but it grew as smaller tennis players started talking about it and then it just grew

If something punitive towards those responsible does not come of this then I will stop watching the WTA... that's OK, I have plenty of vintage matches to watch and talk about

I mean the WTA have already shown they are extremely concerned. This won’t fade away, we won’t let it. We’ve been posting this for weeks. If we don’t hear from Peng at all we have to presume the worst and then action must be taken against China. Many countries have been discussing boycotting the Beijing Winter Olympics in 3 months. As this goes on, that gets louder and they won’t want that

Many players at the YEC were probably extremely focussed on the task in hand. Krejcikova didn't mention Peng but something in her speech about Czechoslovakia had a similar theme. I do think it would have been a good opportunity for something to have been said in the speeches, but particularly for Hsieh I understand the trepidation given she's Taiwanese and likely has ties in China.

They should move Shanghai to Tokyo or Seoul.

The Olympics is big but that will not work as well as the WTA saying no more tournaments there.. Maybe not every player will boycott the Olympics but idk how big tennis is for money in the Olympics... but just never have another tournament in that country again

Yep, Jack Ma and Fan Bing Bing just to name some and they were a literal billionaire and then one of if not the most famous Chinese actress. Insane what they do.

Hsieh is the one I understandably give a pass to and she still said she hopes she’s safe. Hsieh has to worry about herself and her family given what’s going on with Taiwan as well. It’s a really dangerous time.

Whatever the ultimate status of this individual... what are the repercussions for tennis, in your opinion?

Seems like there could be a dramatic impact.

I mean she has to be ok and alive and we need video of her to know that, it may be in a style like we've seen before where it's clear they're being forced to say it but at least we know she's alive. Depends on what the WTA and people say from there, if that's enough that we know she's alive or if they ask for her to leave China.

I can't see this being like Jack Ma and Fan Bing Bing where we don't see them for 3 months, I don't think people will allow that. They did far less than she did in terms of making big allegations against a Vice Premier so we need to know she's ok and not wait.

If we hear nothing, then we see more statements and condemnation will start to come from other areas and politicians will start to speak out. I believe the UK shadow minister for Asia and the Pacific called for the UK foreign secretary to see if Peng is alive and her human rights are being respected. If we hear nothing, fans will not be ok with the tour to just resume next year in China as normal. It would be damaging.

Agreed. I could see this really growing in scope. With both Tours affected.

Once again you are suggesting that the Chinese state has murdered the woman. This is an absurd claim.

Cool then just let her go then and all will be well.

I hope to be proven wrong, but it seems like Fed and Nadal are too tied up in sponsorships that are linked with the Chinese to actually say something.

Just look at the way it’s all a huge PR stunt when they travel to play in Shanghai. Big labels like Mercedes and Rolex (major sponsors of the Shanghai M1000)....it seems a bit dicey for them to make a statement without some kind of blowback.

The CCP silences its critics all the time. This has been happening for decades.

Why does it take the silencing of a young female tennis player to spark such outrage when countless more high profile people, including men like Jack Ma, had been suppressed with little fanfare?

It's just mind boggling to me the rhetoric that gets thrown around here. It's as if some people just look for opportunities be able to say "those Chinese bastards" and get cheered for it. It's pathetic.

Because this is a tennis forum not a Jack Ma forum? I mean are you being thick right now? She accused a Vice Premier of assault, she didn't complain about the banking system or whatever Jack did. Now she's missing, and the tennis world is beyond worried. Not sure how anyone could have a problem with people being concerned about Peng Shuai and yet here you are. Shameful.

This situation with Peng Shui has nothing to do with tennis. She HAPPENS to be a tennis player, but no aspect of her affair with this old Politburo dude which somehow turned into a rape many years into the relationship has anything to do with tennis. We should all hope the best for her, I certainly do.

But how this situation turned into something where the head of the WTA is threatening to pull out of China just reeks of hypocrisy. As if Steve Simon didn't know how the CCP operates but was perfectly happy to hold tournaments in China for the last decade because of the money there was to be made by the WTA. But now all of sudden he's potentially against it? This type of hypocrisy is what I would call shameful.

Because she's a tennis player who hasn't been seen from or heard for 3 weeks and then they tried to release a BS statement on her behalf so the tennis community is beyond horrified. And yeah of course he's suddenly against it when they've literally kidnapped one of their own players. I see some hypocrisy but my god they couldn't just let this slide now could they? Of course they had to speak out.

The WTA is an organization and not a political one at that, that seeks to protect one of its employees. Most corporations have such policies and ethics in place. It HAPPENS that the perpetrator is a high ranking politician in an authoritarian country.

That doesn't make sense to me. So you're saying if a WTA player was sexually assaulted by a former legislator of California, and if that player vanished temporarily, that the WTA should then threaten to cancel their participation in the Indian Wells tournament (which takes place in California)?

Peng would not be an employee, but a self-employed contractor of her own personal services. But if she is registered to play with the WTA then they have a right to make representations, but not as an employer.

She publicly accused a former CCP official of sexual misconduct. Then she disappeared (as happens to Chinese citizens that criticize their Govt.) The Govt. of China apparently fabricated an absurd email purporting to come from Peng in which she says she is Ok and retracts her allegations. Representatives of the WTA have been unable to confirm her whereabouts and that she is OK.

Capisce?

I'm talking about players not wanting to make public comments until they're more informed. The story has really picked up traction the past 2 days so I can see why so many have chosen today to post publicly. Before Osaka, I think the main post came from Cornet, Mahut and Broady of the active players and also Chris Evert.

But we have no proof of who's protecting whom. Unless the WTA knows, I don't see how it, as an organization, can just jump to that conclusion. I see it as a complete overreach. Nothing wrong with us as individuals to have our opinions, of course.
