I’m just glad there’s no gambling in tennis
There is a fair amount of gambling in tennis but, while fans can legally bet on matches, I don't believe that pro tennis players are allowed to bet on tennis matches -- even if they are not participating in the match.

Match-fixing is the primary concern here. There has been numerous incidents of match-fixing discovered in lower levels of professional tennis. Not aware of any cases in the highest levels of pro tennis

Pete Rose, as a player, had gambled on baseball, including placing bets on his own team. But he said he never bet against his team and did not engage in match-fixing

Ok what I loved watching Pete while growing up in the 70's was when he would spike the ball on the pitcher's mound after the 3rd out when he was playing 3rd base or first base. So here's some interviewer asking him about that ...
. RIP Charlie Hustle!

The argument was always made that by betting on his own team, his decisions as a manager may have been altered, perhaps using pitchers more extravagantly in games he was betting on, rather than save them for the next day when he might not have been betting on the game. Maybe. Maybe not. My enduring memory of him is that he ran out every routine ground ball full-speed as if his life depended on it, and that was Hall of Fame effort you just don't see from other players.

Poor guy. Should have said his translator was the one doing the betting.
Rose made a lot of enemies over the years. Sure, they could have easily had an “investigation” and found no wrongdoing by Rose. But that was never going to happen. They wanted to destroy the man. And they did.

Damn. Never saw that before. Awesome!

A big Cincinnati Reds fan while a kid growing up. I was a big fan of Pete Rose and the Big Red Machine. Two World Series with one of the all time best teams in baseball. Was really disappointed to hear Pete bet on baseball. Hard to imagine he'd ever hurt the game he was said to love so much. Saw him signing autographs in the Las Vegas MGM hotel a few times. Thanks for the memories, and RIP Pete.

Put him in the hall, this is silly.

Can recall Pete sprinting to first base after a walk. Had never seen a player hustle like that.
Think he stopped doing that in his older years. Too exhausting.

Pete broke the cardinal rule which is prominently posted in every MLB locker room: No betting on games. Every player is aware of this.
Unfortunate that Pete could not control his gambling addiction and limit his betting to other sports.
Instead, Pete allowed his gambling compulsion to taint the game that he so loved.
AFAIK, Pete is the only prominent MLB player in modern history that has been found guilty of betting on games.

He did not fix games. Always bet on his own team. We get it. But it makes absolutely no difference under the rules.

Would be possibly open to allowing Pete in the Hall. If so, Shoeless Joe should probably be allowed in too.

It is a tragic situation as the Hall meant a lot to Pete. But Pete and his ego made his own bed here. No one man is bigger than the game!

In 2018 divorce papers, Rose's legal team indicated that his health was "deteriorating" after a handful of heart procedures over the preceding five years, with Rose saying that he was, at the time, "disabled and can barely walk or travel." In a June interview with the Cincinnati Enquirer,
Rose pondered the possibility of ever being inducted into the Hall of Fame. "What, are they waiting for me to die?" he said. "Wouldn't that be horrible if I died next week and then next year they reinstated me?"

He needs to be in the Hall. Put an asterisk by his name, whatever. There are far more players in there that have done far worse. Plenty of managers that knew their players were using steroids (cheating), an Astro or two from a few years back that cheated (with a slap on the wrist) will make the Hall. Racists, abusers, you name it. To be honest, it's widely believed Michael Jordan was doing exactly the same thing but no way would the NBA go there.

All-time hit king-a record that will never be broken
17 time All Star-playing 5 different positions!!
One of only 3 players to be named Rookie of the Year, MVP and World Series MVP
Multiple Golden Gloves
200+ hits in 10 seasons!
6000 times on base!

RIP another great from the Big Red Machine.

When Fisk was rounding third after this walk-off home run, Fisk said Rose said something like: "This is great, there's going to be a game 7". RIP. One of the 2 or 3 best baseball players ever to play.

The first non WWE performer to be inducted into their hall of fame celebrity wing. But unlike some of those people in it, Pete Rose more than earned his spot. That rivalry with Kane was awesome. Bless his soul.

Remember that guy that came in for Royal Rumble 2001? I've actually forgotten his name, although Kane was involved again. That guy didn't earn his spot. he's all, ''I don't watch WWF.'' hehehe

Journalist Mike Barnicle was talking about Pete Rose and this game yesterday morning. He said he was a young reporter for the Boston Globe and nervously asked Pete how they would recover from such a game and be ready for game 7. He expected Rose to be rude or give a wise-acre answer but Pete said something like "Are you kidding? It's an honor to play in a game like that. It's probably the best game I've played in and maybe the best game of all-time". GOAT.
