They were both equally away from their primes when Sampras lost to Fed at Wimbledon. Thus, in their primes the result would have been the same.

why make these pointless threads. This question has no answer. Simply a fed fan vs samp fan fest. Not to mention todays grass is slower.

A single match is too small a sample to draw such sweeping conclusions from. Look at the Nadal-Tsonga H2H since the '08 AO.

BTW wasn't that particular interview parsed to death a while ago? I remember reading another thread with the same topic.

Really

They were both equally away from their primes when Sampras lost to Fed at Wimbledon. Thus, in their primes the result would have been the same.

Even if that were true and you could measure the distance from primes exactly, the fact is that Federer won 7-5 in the fifth set. In other words the match was too close to derive a generalisation as to how things would go in many matches on Grass between the two.

federer was before his prime and maybe he wasnt hitting the ball as great as he is now, but he did have speed being younger and all. while sampras was older and past his prime, his footwork was nowhere close to 1993.

This is just BS, Sampras did 1 of his best Wimbledon-finals vs Rafter in 2000, Sampras was very close to his prime in 2001 and still he got his ass whooped by a teenager from Switzerland who peaked 4 years later!!!

Sampras close to his prime on 01? lol Sampras didn't win a title in 01 he was waaay past his prime.

I'd say Sampras would take the majority of them, but almost all would be close scores. Sampras 60% of the time.

Was he now? Why did he win Us Open in 2002 then? You cannot actually believe that this is true,do you? He played a fantastic final in 2000 beating a 28-year old red hot Rafter in the final.
On other surfaces then grass...yes...by 2001 Pete was past his prime but not on grass.

Ayy yai yai...

Pete went 35-16 in 2001..

Yea some prime!!!

Pete's prime ended in 99 I believe. I think it ended somewhere around the time he herniated his disc. Though he still had some great performances here and there.

After 00 Wimbeldon.. Pete lost alot of interest in terms of the week in week out grind by his own admission.. He even said, the challenge was gone after he broke the slam record and had been on top for 6-8 years by that point.

The beauty that was Sampras, winning a slam before his prime, winning a bunch of slams during his prime, and winning a slam past his prime.

Sorry dude, Pete was way past his prime. Just because he played one fantastic match the previous year doesn't mean he was still in his prime. Witness, between W 00 and USO 2002 he had exactly 0 titles.

In 01, Fed was much younger, hungrier, fitter and faster and still needed an epic 5 setter to beat an aging Pete. In their primes, Pete takes it most of the time.

"2001 – Finished in Top 10 for 12th consecutive year, third-longest behind Connors (16) and Lendl (13)...The winningest active player failed to win an ATP title and at least 40 matches for first time since 1989, a Grand Slam crown for first time since 1992 and he finished outside Top 5 for first time since 1991...Reached four finals, including his seventh US Open title match (l. to Hewitt)...Also finalist at TMS Indian Wells, Los Angeles (l. to Agassi in both) and Long Island (l. to Haas)..Had his 31-match winning streak at Wimbledon snapped by Swiss teenager Roger Federer in five sets in 4th RD...His previous loss and only other Centre Court defeat was to Krajicek in QF in 1996...Had a 39-2 career record on Centre Court and 56-2 overall since 1993...At US Open, became first player to beat three former US Open champions en route to final as he beat Rafter (4th RD), rival Agassi in four tie-breaks (without a service break) in one of tournament’s greatest matches of all-time and Safin (SF) in a repeat of 2000 final...Going into championship, had streak of 87 consecutive service games won from 2nd RD on but Hewitt broke in first service game and prevailed 76 61 61...Finished No. 6 in aces (627) and No. 7 in service games won (86 percent)...Parted ways in December with coach Paul Annacone and hired Tom Gullikson to begin 2002 season...2002The all-time leader in Grand Slam singles titles broke over a two-year title drought by capturing his 14th career Grand Slam crown at US Open"

Nonsense. "An aging Pete"?? At 29?? For gods sake come on man!

i was watching some highlights of the match the other day...

have to say, pete was moving great--didn't seem "out of prime" at all...

granted, it wasn't his best ever game, but he was playing really well...

I agree, nice to see that someone realizes fact, he DID play a very good match. Federer came up with shots that Pete never had faced before.

Yes, 29 in the mens game with the style they both played at that time was aging.(Look how many 29(ish) year olds are there in the top 30 compared to those at 19(ish) these days, the daily grind takes its toll physically none more so than in a 5th set) the '01 match was great to watch but the fact that Pete's "prime" was probably 3-4 years before (and thats not to say he couldn't still turn it on as the following years US proved). In a phyical sense you' probably say the younger guy would take the close match most of the time but a mid 90s Sampras against a mid 2000's Fed would be a match of beauty.
