Peter Bodo: Maria Sharapova is not a true Russian

you are real mad, calm down it's not that serious. the point of the article is maria claims russia but made her name because of america. this is not a debate about accomplishments. she has them which is not being questioned they point is her supposed ungratefulness to the country that made her.

Why should she be "grateful" to anybody? Because that makes people like you happy? Because Bozo wants her to be grateful? She has a talent and from her point of view her father brought her over as a kid - she did not make the choice herself. She made the best of what she was offered. That is pretty much all. She considers herself a Russian and her work ethic and no-compromise attitude and lack of over-friendliness matches some of the best Russian immigrants I have worked with, and I think it is deeply embedded in her. She can live wherever she wants without apologizing to jealous idiots who think people should give a sheet about their expectations.

Again, you lack reading comprehension. Bozo's point was not her ingratitude - he is perfectly OK with unpatriotism as he says. His point is that her Russian enthusiasm is not authentic as she is supposedly against similar patriotism from others. This point has no evidence and is entirely a concoction of his. Actually, Bozo is not stupid - he is very intelligent because he has figured out there is an audience of idiots who will like the article.

lol, OK, I guess we all like different things. Her ***, legs and boobs are bigger/thicker than, let's say, Masha/Kournikova combined

greatest post of the thread.+11111

Williams is one of the all time greatest players...but, with the exception of Navratilova, clearly the less feminine, to say a soft expression...

again more ignorance. to be a top tennis player you need training. for training you need money. without money you need a scholarship. which is maria's story. no scholarship, no training, no top player, no slams. simple. ppl hate america so much but many of the olympic atheletes train in america: cavic, kitajima, dirk , many of the track stars and oh yeah the top two women's players in tennis.

What has that got to do with the article? Did you even read it?

Haters gonna hate!

Tell you this: most of the world greatly favored the USA when Russia (Soviet Union) actually had comparable power! I guess it will take an authoritative and aggressive China to show you how lucky you are to be America's northern neighbor

Evan is probably someone not born with a Canadian citizenship and his loyalty will always be with the communist block.

True. Sharapova's body looks like a twelve year old boy's, flat as a pancake lol

Yea but Serena has the arms, hands, and shoulders of an actual grown man (heck some men would love to have her biceps)...

But whatever floats your boat.

If shes not an american citizen , she is not american period. You can argue that she should have a soft spot for the country and be less jingoistic when it comes to USA vs Russia. That I can buy. But if she pays taxes here, if companies like Nike make millions of her, no one can say that it was just her who benefited . It's a mutually beneficial relationship irrespective of what country Sharapova represents.

So they should all play/swim for the US??
Goddamn all this has nothing to do with the article.

that is anecdotal evidence. li na makes more than both of them does that make her more famous. cindy margulis in her prime got more web downloads than anyone but most ppl don't know who she is. btw alot of maria's money was front loaded by nike after her third major assuming she was gonna dominate. after her injury they have been regretting it.

You're right, of course, and I didn't say the Google results were authoritative. This debate is opinion-driven by its nature.

I root for Maria, and thus I'm more familiar with her, but I'm not going to say she's "more famous" than Serena... there's just no accepted way to measure that.

I'm 189 cm tall and weigh 94kg. Serena is a small person next to me. I can't help if most posters here are midgets and seem to think Serena is some sort of a giant.

When a girls hips are narrower than mine, I'm inclined to think she may have a Y chromosome.

so true...neither player is starving anyway...

c'mon DRII, I don't hate Americans at all, but the fact is Americans are not 'loved' anywhere in the world. Go to Paris, tell them you are a Yank, and see what their reaction is. Thank God, everyone loves Canadians :p:lol: ...

I hope you didn't vote for Bush or republicans (j/k about republicans a bit, not about Mr. Bush who I wouldn't vote for even if he was running for my personal janitor :)

and Terra being so patriotic (*brain washed, cough, cough) is hilarious.

Lol Americans seem to be really pissed that she ain't playing for the US.

Now Serena is even considered better looking than Sharapova.

Something tells me that Miss Sharapova has managed to p@ss Bodo off behind the curtains somewhere. This article was rather personal, and that is something I've never read in any of his articles (regardless whether you like his style or not).

I'm quite surprised by it to be honest, regardless of whether he is right or wrong in his approach.

Oh I don't know. Bodo has been known to go on personal attacks before. His writing about Kim Clijsters is very much in that vain (he hates her).

Bodo hates many players (especially Kim and Djokovic). I respect Tignor who is much less biased and much more objective than Mr. Bodo who is just a tool.

I know you don't hate Americans; but alot of the general antipathy you speak of has to do with the fact that America does not have a major rival on the world stage. Once this dichotomy happens again, people around the world will clearer see what their choices are...

And no I did not vote for 'W'. He was a disaster and it will take at least a decade to even attempt to recover (both domestically and foreign policy wise) from his and his party's incompetence!

Strange. Perhaps I need to look over some of his older articles. I don't read all he does, but a fair amount. If that is the case, I'm very surprised as to why he could/would dislike either Kim or Novak.

Serena Williams is by far the most well-known female athlete in the world. Sharapova is probably only about 1/5 as famous.
Yet, Sharapova makes way more money than Serena, even if she doesn't win a single tournament. Sharapova is heavily marketed around the world. Serena? Not so much.

Lol Americans seem to be really pissed that she ain't playing for the US.

If I were an American, I wouldn't want Sharapova to represent me. I would want the best to represent me, and there's only one who can do that. Queen Serena is the epitome of power tennis and precision serving. Heck I wish Serena would change her nationality to Swedish.

Yep. We're really pissed that an American named Serena Williams just smoked Sharapova's a** love and one in the Olympic gold medal final. We are all just so jealous that Maria isn't representing us.

According to Googlefight, Serena Williams clocks about 2,550,000 results, Maria Sharapova about 2,840,000 results.

According to my own Google, Serena about 28,700,000 results, Maria also about 28,700,000 results. (Might just be some sort of weird Google cap on results? I'm not sure.)

Anecdotally, I'd say I see Maria in a lot more endorsements than Serena, but I suspect their endorsement income is actually pretty similar.

So I'd give them nearly equal footing. Certainly it's absurd to call Masha 1/5 as famous as Serena.

Sharapova makes a lot more money than Serena.

no of course, no major rivals although China is getting there and I'm not sure I like it. the problem is our economy is so dependent on America. all problems created by Bush and his government have affected Canada too (house crisis, weak dollar, Wall Street disaster, banking disaster etc.). Canada needs healthy States to be healthy too. that's the fact.

I really believe that the US should focus on economy more, and simply stop trying to fix all problems in the world. I'm strongly against all wars, in general. Your debt is out of control and it looks like nobody is doing anything about it.
You can't just keep printing money and hope for a miracle.

I have many Americans friends and even some relatives ... Seriously, I'm worried.

my apologies btw, didn't mean to derail this thread

I agree with you about how Bush and his cronies really messed up this country, and I am pretty left leaning about just about everything, and NEVER vote republican. All politics are crooked but the Repugs take the cake by a large margin.

Having said that though,if your economy is so highly dependant on us then how about Canada go out and get it's own sh*t instead of complaining about everything? The fact that they are so dependant on a country that is in such a massive hole right now like the US is speaks volumes about how Canada needs to get it's own act together, and stop relying so much on the states.

Oh,and isn't Canada being ran by a conservative right now?

Too late. Lol.

Did the US government pay for her tennis coaching? The Bolletiery Academy is a private academy that happens to be based in the US. Both her parents worked their *** to pay for her coaching. I'm not a fan of her (will never be) but the girl owes nothing to the US.

TEMPER, TEMPER. so much writing but so little substance. no one is putting her in jail for what she does. it's an opinion. no one is jealous, it just pointing out her hypocrisy.....

no one is brainwashed besides you. you bashed a whole country.

Again, can you even read? Where is the hypocrisy? That she doesn't thank people like you? No dude you have no claim to any gratitude and you need to understand that. She doesn't owe you or Bozo nothing, and the only thing she owes the US is to follow the law. No one has any obligation to do anything else.

In any case, that is not even what Bozo said, that is what you came up with him. He made a false claim that she was against patriotism by others. His confused hateful mind spew out that crap, just like he posted a Nadal picture in a doping article, and then went crawling to Uncle Toni at IW with an apology to get an interview.

speaking of not being able to read.....you apparently can't. where did i say she should thank me? i just felt it was hypocritical to get everything from america and then pretend like it didn't happen. it's called an opinion, just like you have yours. the difference is i can state without going crazy like you.

Canada can't just go out ... our economies our tied up too much. They are trying to change it, but it's easier said than done. we are exporting almost 65% **** we make to the States.

As for liberals and conservatives here ... I like Liberals and their policies (on the paper) but last time they were elected they behaved as a bunch of crooks (not sure how much you follow Canadian politics but Liberals literally abused the system to their own financial advantage and personal gains to no end, it was horrible). Liberals completely lost all respect and it is going to take a long time till they can gain it back. I don't like Conservatives and their policies but they seem to be more able to take better care of our economy at the moment. Then we have this 'Socialist/Communist' party called NDP that I just can't stand. I don't even know who to vote for any more .

Our prime minster Harper is a silly conservative clown who can't even smile. God, I even hate that word 'conservative' ... he is BS about family values, tried to ban gay marriages (as if we don't have more important things to worry about) ... just an idiot.

OK, I should stop, just venting :)

The funny thing is that when I criticize Sharapova for being ungracious, or even ungrateful, I'm accused of being some sort of jingoistic zealot (full disclosure, I was an immigrant -- just like Sharapova). If that's so offensive, why isn't Sharapova's Russian patriotism equally scorned?

Perhaps it's because we don't see or hear Sharapova spending a whole lot of time praising Russia and you're just being ********?

I don't have a problem with people who are unpatriotic. I do have a problem with people who think patriotism is OK for some, but not for others (in other words, "Americans").

Well maybe people criticize American patriotism because they have managed to raise it to unequaled heights of silliness. Just a thought...

And would you have spent the first four paragraphs of your article bashing Sharapova, sometimes for things totally unrelated to patriotism, if she was being patriotic towards the US instead of Russia? I think not...

Your article is one gigantic load of trash.

could you please enlighten us with your 'she got everything from America' theory, lol? silly, silly, silly ... you just don't get it.

LOL. Serena is so much prettier that's why she's well behind in endorsements and wealth despite being 6 years older on a pro tour much longer.

Serena is the prettiest linebacker in tennis. :)

Hahaha.Even Richard Williams can´t change that.

The prettiest US black female athlete is Gaby Douglas, by far...

I remember, in the early 80´s Leslie Allen, a top tenner for a while and really nice looking ( and so much more class than any Williamses past or future)

Serena is even behind Li Na.

In the grand scheme of things, this is what matter:
8>2 Head to Head against Sharapova
14>4 Single Slam titles

And today 6-0, 6-1 to win the Gold.

I think Serena is going to be alright.

Quoted for truth. Serena is a true legend of her sport and beyond it, while the local TW hate mongers try to sell Sharapova's questionable appearance. All so telling.

Are you really responding to that guy's hidden agenda? I think it's pretty obvious what he stands for.

Beeotch, stop being a coward!

If you consider Serena's body to be very feminine then thats your opinion. I don't, although she's toned down from how she was before. I also don't think Sharapova's body is all that.

Not that either cares what my opinion is...

Both are aesthetically acceptable enough to have major endorsements; Sharapova has more...

*siiiiiiigh* I don't necessarily agree with Bodo's article (Sharapova's free to present and represent herself however she chooses) but just like the comments section in the original article on tennis.com, you guys continue to miss the point.

He's not exactly questioning why she isn't playing for America, it's wondering what exactly has Maria Sharapova demonstrated or done for Russia, specifically, to present herself as Russian on the tennis stage. She barely plays Fed cup, doesn't speak Russian anywhere publicly, doesn't get along with her teammates, etc. Part of his article is rooted in a perceived "ungratefulness" she's shown to the coaches, trainers, lifestyle and home that she has in the US. She doesn't ever appear to even visit her homeland despite her mother still living there.

Bodo says himself that he's a first-gen immigrant to the US. If you've ever been born in another country and immigrated here, you know where he's coming from. My native Bangladesh gave me an ethnic identity, family, and a cultural backbone but I consider myself an American through and through. I was raised here, went to school here, earn a living here. I am eternally grateful for my Citizenship and the life I've been able to make for myself in the US. I support Bangladesh and I've visited a few times since moving here but make no mistake: America is my home.

not all women look the same or did you let vogue brainwash you.

Are you from east Germany?

Oh and BTW; Vogue has little influence on women's aesthetics anymore; or not nearly as much as in the past...

Curves are in, and always have been with me, as the popularity of Beyonce, J-Lo, Kim K. can attest to!

I'm speaking of femininity when it comes to Serena's physique...
