Bodo says himself that he's a first-gen immigrant to the US. If you've ever been born in another country and immigrated here, you know where he's coming from. My native Bangladesh gave me an ethnic identity, family, and a cultural backbone but I consider myself an American through and through. I was raised here, went to school here, earn a living here. I am eternally grateful for my Citizenship and the life I've been able to make for myself in the US. I support Bangladesh and I've visited a few times since moving here but make no mistake: America is my home.
And Sharapova does not want to become a citizen, which should not bother you one way or the other. She is also rich enough not to have have to make choices or to ingratiate herself with her "neighbors" to feel "accepted."
Never fall for that "I am also an immigrant" crap. It is in the same league as the "I have Black friends myself" of a generation ago. Being an immigrant is no testimonial to intelligence or lack of bigotry. Often, immigrants bring their native anti-democratic, misogynistic, homophobic and racist views with them into the US, and are far less tolerant of others than those who welcomed them. Some of them are ashamed of their identity and cultivate a pseudo-patriotic swagger to preempt any comments about them.
