Petition for TW and Wilson to collaborate, and RE-RELEASE the Pro Staff 90

If the Pro Staff 90 were to be re-release, how many would you buy?

Dear @TW Staff

I hope this message finds you, and your entire staff doing well.

I've taken some time away from your message boards and to my surprise, it looks like the love for traditional, (truly) box beamed Pro Staff 90's is still alive and well.

These following threads are just a sample of what I could find regarding the Pro Staff 90, and the activity is quite high still:

"THE MIGHTY PRO STAFF 90 THREAD"
This one thread alone has nearly 40 pages of discussion about the Pro Staff 90

And more recently:

"? Question? Will Wilson re-release one of Federer Pro Staff 90's Upon retirement"

Regardless of what happens with the career of Roger Federer, I believe that a lot of us will continue to use our favorite version of the Pro Staff 90. However, you can make our tennis life a lot easier by giving us the ability to replenish our stock.

Personally speaking, these are the reasons why I'd like a re-release of the Pro Staff 90:
1) These frames are getting up there in age, especially those who from the early Pro Staff Tour 90 and nCoded days. A lot has happened over the course of these 10-20 years
2) Grommets are basically impossible to find
3) Auction sites can be highly suspects
4) Used prices are outrageous and suspect
5) Leftover stock for NEW prices are even more outrageous and even more suspect
6) The newer, bigger, 97 is great and all. But most of us would agree with a marginal increase in power, a lot of the magic has left the frame
7) Some of us, including myself actually suffered with the bigger 97 because we've lost the whip that we were so familiar with the 90. The bigger 97 cuts through the air like a frosted up cake
8) Regardless of who is using/endorsing it on the tour, even if there's no tour level representation, we still love our traditional, truly box beamed Pro Staff 90
9) Despite what the general public look at these frames, they are STILL relevant in today's game!

TT community, please share your love and desire for this amazing racquet to the storefronts of TW! I've included a poll for you all to vote in, please participate.

The K90 should be the one that they re-release. Just something truly epic about that frame. All the same though, I wouldn't buy one.

Still play with the k90 to this day. A re-release of that racquet (in a cool pj like the ps85 or the v13) would enable me to stock up to be tennis ready for a lot longer.

For me, my pick would be the 2014 Pro Staff 90. To me, that was the closest thing to what I could find in the 6.0 85, but in a 90 form factor.

But hey, they can re-release ANY of the version and I'd be fine with them. I mean, they all practically play within a hair to one another. Just uhh... anything but the bloody Q-Tip 2012-2013 paint job. Hahahaha

I have on N90. Glad I have it, never hit with it and wouldn't be interested in another. It's blacked out and I put brand new grommets on it before I strung it back in 2019 so it has that going for it I guess.

I never had a chance to "really" play with the original black/yellow Tour 90. I just know that the PWS spacing was much closer to the PS 6.0 85 where it gets denser at the PWS. I believe K90 and on, the PWS as even as the rest of the string bed.

I got a preserved new kps88 last summer which has been my main racquet since. Then I got a used retail ncode sixonetour 90 a few months ago ($50 off the bay) for collection. The kps88 seems closer to that description of the pro stock n90 , with the four spaced out strings on the PWS edge rather than the retail five strings, and also the shorter pallet handle. So maybe when Sampras was asked by wilson his specs for making the kps88, he asked for something similar to Fed's stock n90 or k90, but adding his characteristic extra weight but embedded in the frame instead of lead tape? If so, how about reissuing the kps88 while they're at it for the tour90 or k90? haha, one can wish. But yes, I'm fine if they just did a commemorative k90 reissue with Fed's signature. (no silhouette face please, too). A pic of my kps88 & n90 :

Wow... I can't believe there was a time when 3 thin box beamed Pro Staffs were available at the same time.

But yes, the original 6.0 85 had densely spaced crosses at the PWS. Original Black/Yellow Tour 90 and the nCode 90 had the same dense PWS spacing.

k90 and on, much more evenly spread out.

Just to give a quick tally of the polling so far. Looks like 2/3 (~66%) of the people who have votes would buy at least 1. While the vast majority of those who voted "yes I would buy some", would get at least 5.

Do you think we can all commit for @TW Staff to consider opening a conversation with Wilson, and place an order of 1,000 frames?
I heard that's the number we need to reach for Wilson to open shop again for a re-release.

And maybe, we can say which grip sizes would we actually need, so TW won't have left over stock that no one buys? (please let me know if a separate thread/poll would be better for this question.)

Thank you all for voting and contributing, please keep showing love to your Pro Staff 90 and maybe we can actually pull this off! ;)

How many of you are wearing out your 90's not from abuse or lacking anger management, but because the normal wear and tear of hitting thousands of balls and the stress of a typical string job?

Would you like to play with a fresh set of racquets again?

What do you guys miss about your Pro Staff 90 that you just can't find in today's market?
Thin beam, rock solid stability with relative ease to swing, quick moving through the air, great crisp feeling on contact.
If true that says some pretty unflattering things about the tennis racquet market today. Is it a case where you can't find this at all or more that nothing new achieves the same level as the Pro Staff 90?

It's not that today's racquets are not good. They're great, there's nothing wrong with them. It's just that none of them hits like one of these older Pro Staff 90.

To me, there's nothing on the market that flexes like a thin box beam. The newest RF97 plays as close as a racquet can to these older Pro Staffs, but they don't swing or flex like a true thin box beam.

If you want to get into detail on that I'm all ears. By box I assume you mean the shape of the beam cross section?

Yeah, the shape of the beam. Basically a box shaped beam with 4 distinct surfaces and 4 distinct corners.

It's technically not all that aerodynamic, (I mean it's box shaped), which is why I think Wilson abandoned it when they went with a bigger head and a thicker beam. I don't care what Wilson calls the beam shape of the new Pro Staffs, those aren't box beams.

But at 17mm, these things cut through the air incredibly fast despite having a less than optimal aerodynamic shape. And it's one of the biggest reason why I want these frames to be re-released.

I also think box beamed racquets have a unique feel to them. To me, it increases the dwell time of the stringbed. Again, not proven, just my personal opinion.

Beautiful rackets gotta say.

So beam thickness refers to the distance along the line parallel with the string bed? Is there a term for the distance along the line perpendicular to the string bed?

I also think box beamed racquets have a unique feel to them. To me, it increases the dwell time of the stringbed. Again, not proven, just my personal opinion.
Well this would make sense as the flat surface should be worse at resisting stress caused by the force of the impact than a rounded surface of the same material.

The beauty of the Wilson 90's is the combination of the thin beam with low twist weight (partly due to small headsize) that allows it to cut through the air like a knife through butter.

If the used/NOS prices are outrageous, then that tells you the demand is still there.

I'd love to see a re-release of the K90.

I liked the K90 overall, but my complaints are:

  1. the racquets were prone to breaking at around 4 & 8 o'clock.
  2. the paint peeled and wore out very quickly

I'm reviving this old thread in hopes that the release of the PT2.0 is making people nostalgic for the Pro Staff 90s.
We’ve had a couple of PS85 releases, I bet this one happens at some point. I know 2 folks around me that still play with the 90 at. 4.5 level (one is a 5.0 but petitioned down bc he had no one to play with). It’s still a viable frame for guys who can wield it
