Pickleball injuries may cost Americans $400 million this year

(CNN) – The fastest-growing sport in the U.S. appears to be causing millions of dollars in healthcare bills.

UBS analysts said pickleball accounts for about $377 million, which is about 5 to 10% of unexpected medical costs.

One reason for this is that seniors tend to play it. A 2021 study shows seniors account for the vast majority of related ER visits.

Common injuries include sprains, strains, and fractures.

UBS estimates the number of people who play pickleball could reach 22 million this year.

This thread should have been posted in the Pickleball forum.
However, as this is a true Pickleball Hate Thread, I respect it, and I have no objection at all to its being posted in O&E, to benefit from a considerably larger audience. It can stay here without any problems, so that much more people is duly informed.

Saw this online recently, and then on one of the TVs at work yesterday they were discussing the article. Made me lol.

Well neither a sprain nor a strain is an emergency, so neither should be addressed in an Emergency Room. As insurance companies figure this out deductibles for "inappropriate" ER visits are going up (as they should). Not everything should be "medicalized".

The OP's economic conclusion is woefully inadequate and surely bogus. As even relatively mild forms of exercise and physical activity, of the kind pickleball demands, are known to reduce cardiovascular events, blood pressure, hyperglycemia, insomnia, possibly even cognitive decline, and other medical complaints, it's absurd to talk about the costs an activity might incur without also considering the SAVINGS it might lead to.

Yes one always should consider all trade offs and permutations of the things we engage in.
I wonder what the nature of the medical problems are and whether they can be addressed by individuals in the way they look after their health,

How much does it cost those same seniors if they don’t do any exercise or socializing at their advanced age? I think the general benefit to their physical health and emotional well-being from playing a group sport has to be greater than any injuries they get.

How much is saved because the oldies are healthier because of Pickleball?

On the other hand, how many people have been affected healthwise because of the noise?

Well doc … I counter your trade off with a trade off trade off

The healthier you keep seniors … the longer they live … the longer they collect social security. Think of the savings if we all die at 65? Of course… that presents yet another trade off for docs, hospitals, senior living communities, pickleball facilities … old people payoff like the lottery.

That fella @Sudacafan is a pickleball hater. At his age you would think he would hedge his bets … his pickleball years are just around the corner. :-D

Edit: I would like to go on record that I am in favor of slowing cognitive decline of senior drivers … scary as sh.!.t out there.

That's why cigarettes are amazing. Most smokers are diagnosed with lung cancer right around retirement age. And they die within a year, keeping medical bills low.

It sounds like a joke, but economists really have done studies on this. And when you factor in the uncollected Social Security and Medicare benefits (among other things), smokers are a gold mine to society.

If you see a smoker today, thank them for their service

Alcoholics on the other hand are a mess. They miss work all the time, die slowly, and rack up all sorts of medical bills. Selfish pr!cks.

I have turned this thread in an ugly direction … my work here is done.

That’s pretty ****ing funny but overall seniors will be better off staying active and engaged with friends and community than not. That’s the one (small) saving grace of pickleball, it is beneficial for old people.

Perhaps 65+ should be exempt from war on drugs.

It's pretty selfish for people to live a long time and drain the system.

It's fine to pay in all your life. But then please have the decency to die. It's the height of bad manners to overstay your welcome. Can't old people take a hint?

By the way, how old are you?
He is a sprightly 95

65 and just recently started sucking on my government t.!.t account … I use it for pickleball and paddles :-D:-D:-D

2 more years and the government pays for all your pickleball injuries too

Already does … starts at 65. And under the banner of “you can’t make this up” … our senior insurance pays for the fitness club (pickleball). Hopefully they don’t rethink that after the $400 million tab.

I’d be willing to buy you some cigarettes:)
This is not nice … and I would not build a website for you … even if I built websites.

Cigarettes will not work fast enough since I have not smoked in 65 years other than childhood dried grape vines and a couple of curiosity tokes in college. My largest consumption was bars second hand smoke in my singles years … now I can remember that as my future contribution to saving murica $.

I will be winning Powerball tomorrow (Saturday) and I will consider recycling my social security.

Noise contamination.

I couldn’t read the article … apparently past my NYT free limit. I can tell you what else it can contaminate … marriage bliss. No matter how close you are … if you play mostly pball doubles with wife for 6 months … she will eventually tell you that your pickleball play sucks. It will happen … might happen early … might happen later … but one day she will stare you down and elaborate on your pball suckiness. We are in a one week timeout :-D

@ByeByePoly , if you insist.

“It’s like having a pistol range in your backyard,” said John Mancini, 82, whose Wellesley, Mass., home abuts a cluster of public courts.

“It’s a torture technique,” said Clint Ellis, 37, who lives across the street from a private club in York, Maine.

“Living here is hell,” said Debbie Nagle, 67, whose gated community in Scottsdale, Ariz., installed courts a few years ago.

I think that is why old people play the game. They can't hear anything.

Any signs of pickleball in your realm yet? I easily won my bet with my Paraguaya friend who assured me that pickleball would never come to Paraguay within the next 3 years. It only took a few months for a pickleball horde to appropriate a public tennis court there.

Still no signs. I am not looking for them as well.

Drinking, smoking, eating sugar and processed foods and sitting around watching TV and watching YouTube and social media will cost Americans 10 times more ( minimum) than playing sport.
People really need to wake up.
