Pickleball injuries may cost Americans $400 million this year

(CNN) – The fastest-growing sport in the U.S. appears to be causing millions of dollars in healthcare bills.

UBS analysts said pickleball accounts for about $377 million, which is about 5 to 10% of unexpected medical costs.

One reason for this is that seniors tend to play it. A 2021 study shows seniors account for the vast majority of related ER visits.

Common injuries include sprains, strains, and fractures.

UBS estimates the number of people who play pickleball could reach 22 million this year.

We must ban pickelball . this is travesty of ball playing court

My microfracture surgery (left) in 2012 and my total knee replacement surgery (right) nine weeks ago were both caused from playing tennis since the age of 5. I gave up tennis and now play only pickleball because it's much easier on the body (and a much more social atmosphere as well).

ollinger, crocodile, and socallefty make great points - what is the strain/cost on the healthcare system if those who play pickleball sit around and do nothing? The posts sites the year 2021...I can only speak for our area, but since 2021 I would say that the median age of players in our area (which has grown over 750%) has gone from around 60 to now between 40 and 45. Many more young people are picking up the game now than they did pre-Covid. And obviously many more people are playing pickleball now than in the past so there will be many more injuries.

How is the knee replacement recovery going?

Our weekday morning open play has just as many 30-50 as 50+ … which tells me two things 1) the just the old is a wish/justification by some … past me included ;) 2) there are a lot of people with flexible hour jobs.:-D

When I occasionally play open play on Saturdays … lot’s of players in their 20s. We also get several member’s college kids that got interested because their parent’s play.

How much is saved because the oldies are healthier because of Pickleball?

On the other hand, how many people have been affected healthwise because of the noise?
Seniors do not need earplugs when playing Pickled-ball. Theme,

Bolivia. I live here for decades already.

You may be safe from the P'ball pandemic for a while. No signs of it there AFAIK. But you might want to get vaccinated against it as a precautionary measure.

Note that there are a number of P'ball courts in the town of Bolivia, North Carolina. So it might just be a matter of time that it spreads to Bolivia, South America

The day pickleball spreads to Bolivia, I will be moving to Papua New Guinea, Kiribati, Vanuatu, Eritrea, or Montana, in that order.

Drinking, smoking, eating sugar and processed foods and sitting around watching TV and watching YouTube and social media will cost Americans 10 times more ( minimum) than playing sport.
People really need to wake up.

You are often taking the position of a knowit all, besserwisser.. Why is that?

No it’s called commonsense, and logic, you should try it someday. Btw aren’t you the one constantly virtue signalling about the climate, solar panels and wind turbines ?

At 11.5 weeks after surgery it's going a thousand times better than it was week two where physically, mentally, and emotionally I was a wreck! Things started progressing nicely around week six and have steadily been getting better. It buckles on me from time to time but definitely getting stronger! I appreciate you asking!

LOL!!! I haven't been able to play since mid April (doc says I can start dinking again August 1st) and from the looks of the new members on our TeamReach app...I'm going to be one of the old players at 56! My thoughts exactly on the flexible hours...I'm a teacher so I have from about the second week of June to the second week of August to play (dumb of me to plan my TKR during my time off), but there are players out there from 7:30 until 11:00 almost every day...then around 11 they say I'm going to have some lunch and go into work! What???

As a teacher of middle schoolers...I love seeing the younger people getting involved!

Good … was hoping you would have a good result. Sitting here counting … I had four tennis friends get knee replacement (one both knees) and all four came back to tennis court good to go. My buddy that ended up getting both replaced said no problem with movement/function … just felt foreign. My mother had a knee replacement and she went through some soreness for a couple of years … switched to golf from tennis. I think she was over 60 when she had the surgery.

We played two hours open play this morning … still loving it. Looks like I can finally stop buying paddles for a while now … Vatic Pro Prism Flash is what I had hoped for trying to improve my soft game. Let’s put it this way … can’t blame any kitchen flaws on the paddle.

I saw several news reports on the topic and this includes elderly people suffering torn meniscus and partial tears of the supraspinatus tendon. There is always a risk and reward scenario when it comes to any major physical or recreational activity. I think those with degenerative knees or pre-existing conditions should consult their health care provider and determine the degree of participation they should allocate to Pickleball and other sports. Physical activity is a good thing, but we should think wisely how to be active without needless risk.

Over the next 10-20 years, there will be a gold rush of people installing PB courts in their yards. ¼ the size of a tennis court. Fraction of the cost? I also think we’re going to see driveways painted with lines for use with a $70 net. BOOM. 24/7 PB at home. If only the tennis junkie could have done this! the courts eventually becoming as ever-present in certain communities as backyard pools.

I've been wondering about this since the first time I saw pickleball. Due to the short paddle length, there's a lot of knee bending - that can't be good for seniors.

Parents do this for children, but pickleball is not taking off with the young any time soon.
