Pickleball invasion?

My friend who is a member at a nearby Lifetime tells me that young members are having coed Pickleball parties where they play, drink alcohol and smoke weed. The older guys playing tennis doubles nearby with each other are envious.

At my club, we don‘t have pickleball except at one of the three facilities and you see players drinking beer during tennis doubles also. But usually it is older alcoholics who drink before, during and after matches. Many hang out at the bar afterwards and this is making mixed doubles more popular.

lol … you just converted a bunch of pb haters with that post.

“Hey, we have real racquets, real balls, and strings.”

“Cool … we got babes, drinks and weed.“

:-D

I don’t think pb ratings are consistent across the country judging by videos I watch. But here (mid-west) … good firefights are happening by 3.5. Good firefights seem to happen before consistent dinking which has surprised me.
We get the occasional fire fights, but kind of like in tennis usually the point ends with a mistake rather than someone hit.

To me the firefights are the best part of pickleball. This morning we had one that must have exceeded 10 hits … crazy point. Sometimes if playing easier opponents I will just block to opponent to keep it going.

Besides firefights you can also get hit from a speedup … but doesn’t hurt like full firefight swing/hit. :p

Both these guys played college tennis … the drill they are doing is displays key parts of higher levels, and how you often get hit by speedup or counter:

- don’t hit dink to high
- pick your speedups wisely … both how far below on your side the net and target at opponent (often right shoulder or right hip of right handers)
- counters (opponent smacks your speedup attempt past you)

The other key element in higher level play not shown here is 3rd shot drop. Tony Sheng’s (pickleburner) videos would not be bad as a first stop for tennis players starting pb. He makes the case the few important elements of higher level pickleball is the soft game which is what tennis players have to learn.

That 3rd shot drop is what gave me the most trouble in the pb tournament. I would either float it or hit it in the net. Eventually I gave up and just started hitting it as hard as I could and low.

Looks like a good drill to try. I don't really have anyone to practice with like that. All the people I've played besides the tournament are pretty low level so I can win just playing like tennis and doing reflex volleys.

I flat out didn’t want to do the 3rd shot drop … can’t say I want to now. :-D

I also didn’t want to go in behind my return.

Both for same reason … you don’t get to hit many full baseline swings in pb doubles, basically ros, 3rd shots, and when teammates are out of position (lobs for example).

But this pickleball player learned the painful 3rd shot lessons along the way:

1) beat by players with no baseline strokes but great drops and good at kitchen
2) beat by better/younger bangers and I had inadequate soft skills to force them to kitchen.

My soft game is better now, but I haven’t had any chance to drill either … courts always full, most would rather play. Starting to find some courts now open later in the day, and wife begrudgingly has agreed to work on 3rd shot drops. She is not happy about it  … she also comes from tennis.

btw … most claim the hardest shot in pickleball is 3rd shot drop. For me … it wasn’t. It was:

- 1hbh punch volley at kitchen with no/little shoulder turn
- hit 5+ dinks in a row without popping one up or hitting into net

My back and knees felt sore after watching some of that clip, so much crouching, bending forward as you can't cross that line. Looks harder on the joints to me than doubles tennis (depending on how committed you are to chasing balls in doubles tennis of course)

Yes, in Lake Oswego Oregon it's been banned. My friend who lives there was going to play but she has to travel so far and she changed he rmind.
So is this a whole city or just an area of a city. That's a bit harsh to ban it altogether. :) mean like I said, I think it can be okay...just don't force it down tennis players throats.

So lots of discussion and debate about this topic. My question is where do people think tennis and pickleball will be by 2034, in 10 years time?
Do people think that the pathway to professional status and wealth creation would become more attainable in pickleball, hence attract future athletes or is pickleball less sustainable as an international sport ? Becoming pro and making money on the tennis tour is quite difficult. I think this is a major thing about the sports. Another question, could PB attract a Wimbledon style stadium and crowd if they held a tournament in London? I would like to read what people think about these scenarios.

This has been my 14 months starting pb at 65 with no back or knee issues, previous moderate hamstring injuries (both legs from tennis 5+ years ago):

- sore lower back first couple of weeks and doesn’t happen anymore

- calves tight from the start, minor tweak early now just massaging tight calves has kept injury away

- early on first case ever of jumper’s knee … added pre-pb stretch and has not come back

Basically much more bending knees in pb … kitchen and wiffle low bounce. Good news in pb, at least doubles … the planting and change of direction is less than in tennis. Also … smaller court, less running/sprinting.

Salt Lake Magazine's current issue has an entertaining cover story about pickleball v. tennis. Apparently Utah has the highest pickleball participation in the country. They got some humorous quotes from tennis players who are not happy about it:

"If I hear 'pickleball is the fastest growing sport' one more time, I'm going to throw up."

"It's ridiculous to say tennis is elistist and therefore therefore I refuse to play. I call that reverse snobbery. If you refuse to hang out with 'tennis snobs,' doesn't that make you a snob?"

"To me, it's a hit-and-giggle sport, and yet somehow you're always getting injured."

No online version of the article yet, but you can see the cover here:

Not yet … loss to Fed ;) in final … but he’s coming. New paddle tech and the arrival of the Sock forehand has merged to disrupt pro pickleball singles. Men’s doubles … less chance … because unlike singles, you can‘t avoid kitchen centric play. But … we will see … he has the magic hands but power matters less in doubles.

He might be jinxed against guys nicknamed Fed, was 0-4 against Federer I believe !

Sock will be good for this stupid game … crowd was loving it. The right forehand and right personality.

Pickleball is showing an enormous increase in charity and singles-mingle events. That is where the threat to tennis is going to be felt the most. The singles events will pull in the younger crowd due to the large number of females, while the charity events will pull in the older and richer people to make them feel good about themselves.

I have nothing against pickleball except that it's not my sport. Does anyone have suggestions/tips on how I can get Youtube to stop recommending me PIckleball videos? I only subscribe to tennis content. I've right clicked and said "Don't recommend channel" and yet every other day, there's another Pickleball vid recommended. It's weird how their algorithm works... I don't get badminton videos or racquetbal video... I'm wondering if I should start reporting the videos as offensive content, if that will convince the algorithm I don't want that ****? Or should I open some pickleball videos and thumbs down them?

We had a couple from church that wanted to get out an play tennis, but we couldn't get a court so ended up playing pickleball again this weekend with them. they are younger folks (later 20's) and they certainly had me and my wife running about. Took us a whole game of laughing about serving, scoring, and remember that what we thought we should be doing wasn't right before we got the rules back in our heads. I mean, it is always fun but missed more movement.

Never knew about PB on Har-tru/Clay

Looks like an AI generated photo
- too many people at the baseline. It seems playing at the kitchen is more common
- the furthest court appears to be 2 against 1
- the near court I think the guy just served, and the ball is just over the net but the other 2 are already swinging
- random cart in the middle

I tried pb last week for the first time. Old friend's birthday and he got a pb set from his gf and he asked me to play. Neither of us had tried it before. Cooperative rally was super easy even though my friend is out of shape and doesn't play racket sports.

20 minutes in my friend hurt is hip flexor (I think) and limped off the court. Went to the Dr and was told 10 days rest. :-D

Favorite part was dinking around the kitchen. Came pretty easy to me as I like to hit lots of drop volleys and touch shots around the net in tennis. I'm sure it's hard to get good but it sure is easy to get started. Imagine a 30 shot rally in tennis 10 minutes after picking up a racket for the first time!

I see no reason to play again but I definitely see the allure for a lot of people.

Very very good.

I had noticed the second point.

It is a good reminder of how convincing deep fake AI can be.

But I am not sure. This is a pic of the same place from a search:

Don't know if this goes here but I had an encounter with some picklers last night.

There is a neighborhood park that used to have two tennis courts. Now there are two pickleball courts and one tennis court. The scenery is very nice, shady court after 6pm which is prime real estate in Oklahoma summertime.

Problem we've been running into is pickleball spill over. Just constantly chasing picklers off the courts. Usually they are pretty accepting. Not all the time. And sometimes just the sheer number of picklers is too overwhelming. I've seen 8 picklers on the tennis court and 8 waiting.

Long story short. Last night kind of took the cake. My neighbor hitting partner show up to hit some tennis balls. Its usually busy this time of year. Pickleball courts were full. Typical. And on one side of the tennis court a very enthusiastic group of middle aged picklers had set up their own net. And they DREW PICKLEBALL LINES ON THE TENNIS COURT.

They looked like such nice people. That's the thing. But who knows how long those lines are going to be there. I feel like people just don't really think anymore. Like they're just so happy to.be doing something that they give even less of a damn than before.

We eventually got the court and had a good hit. The lines were in bad places though. One was a foot from the service line and one a foot from the baseline. Really had me wanting to shame a man in public in front of his wife and friends. I'm usually a nice person.

Professional pickleball players should hope it doesn't become an olympic sport or we will see 1,000 Chinese table tennis players who didn't make the national team jump into the sport, not to mention the Spanish Padel players.

Pickleball on clay is a real thing at Baltimore Country Club, even the best in the world play there. Palmetto Dunes had all the hardcourts converted to pickleball, are the clay courts next?

Watched the first point - 21 dinks in a row, but Pickelball fans insist these guys are just as athletic and skilled as Sinner and Alcaraz.
