Just curious, has anyone here ever tried playing Pickleball? It's a racquet sport halfway between ping-pong and tennis, played with a small wooden or plastic paddle and a large plastic baseball with holes -- like a wiffle ball. This is my 3rd time straight in high school gym this year that i'm in Pickleball (Junior), and i'm addicted. Beware though, it's a bit tough going back to tennis after playing this, the feel of the racquets and strokes are so different. The techniques and shots are the same though, so if you're good at tennis, you'll feel right at home playing this.

Here's the official website for those that want to check it out: http://www.pickleball.com/

I played it in P.E. today. It's pretty fun but I wasn't use to the wooden racket and the plastic hollow ball. Still I went undeafeated today 3-0. I'm will be playing again tomorrow. I don't think there will be anyone in my class able to stop me. The same hapened in the badminton last fall. Our class did not play singles, but doubles tournement, me and my friend won the tourney, but on the way lost 1 match.

Yeah i'm top of my class too. It just sucks when you're put with a crappy partner... and about the feel of the paddle, you need to hit quite a bit harder in PB and go right through the ball ;)

I love pickleball. In gym class, I always dominate badminton and pickle ball. If I get stuck with a bad partner, I just tell them to stand at the back of the court, and just stand there. It is kind of mean, but they suck at it, not me. Haha.

Never tried it, but 17 years makes this the OG PB thread and thus should be the Official one.

Yeah, that was about the time I became aware of PB. I would often see "whiffle balls" and wooden Pickleball paddles left out on some of the tennis courts where I was teaching.

15-20 years ago, a lot of the high schools (and Jr high schools) in the area were teaching it to their students, for 2-3 weeks (I think) as part of their PE/gym curriculum. Many schools were doing it in lieu of trying to teach the kids tennis -- since most kids wouldn't be able to get very far in mastering tennis strokes in 2-3 weeks. And suitable PB equipment was considerably cheaper than cheapo tennis equipment.

Some schools in the area had their PB classes on tennis courts whereas others were teaching it on badminton courts with a lowered net. (A doubles badminton court has the exact same outer boundaries as a proper PB court).

It started in Seattle named after kurt cobains cat!? Crazy he invented grunge AND pickle ball!
Cool story... except the official story is that it was invented back in the 1960s on an outdoor badminton court, on an island in the state of Washington (~10 miles outside of Seattle), and was supposedly named after the family dog

There have been a number of Cat Cobains. From what I've heard, Kurt named some of his cats:

Puff
Spina Bifida
Quisp

Not sure he ever had a cat named, Pickle(s). Perhaps PB should be renamed Puffball, Quispball or Bifidaball in honor of Kurt's cats
