Player Slam!

Let's introduce a new term: Player Slam.

A player is said to have won a <<player name>> Slam if they have defeated <<player name>> in all 4 majors.

For example, Federer has a Career Djokovic Slam:

Australian Open (R16 2007)
Roland Garros (SF 2011)
Wimbledon (SF 2012)
US Open (SF 2009, SF 2008, F 2007)

(As with Grand Slams, bonus points can be awarded for consecutive wins, for both players being in their perceived prime, for meeting in the final, for olympic wins, etc)

Can you come up with more examples involving current or past players?

(For example, in 2011-2012, Djokovic came pretty close to completing a Consecutive All-Finals Nadal Slam! But no cigar)

According to
http://tennis28.com/slams/headtohead.html#fs
there were only 21 rivalries at all four slams (at least in the Open Era).

But there are only the numbers of matches listed, not the results. So I researched it myself and found 9 cases in which one player defeated the other at all slams.

Federer defeated Djokovic (AO 2007 R16; RG 2011 SF; WIM 2012 SF; US 2007 F + 2008 SF + 2009 SF)
Sampras defeated Courier (AO 1995 QF; RG 1996 QF; WIM 1993 F; US 1992 SF + 1995 SF)
Nadal defeated Murray (AO 2007 R16; RG 2011 SF; WIM 2008 QF + 2010 SF + 2011 SF; US 2011 SF)
Sampras defeated Martin (AO 1994 F; RG 1996 R32 + 1998 R128; WIM 1994 SF; US 1992 R32 + 1995 R16)
Federer defeated Nalbandian (AO 2004 QF; RG 2006 SF; WIM 2011 R32; US 2005 QF)
Murray defeated Cilic (AO 2010 SF; RG 2009 R16; WIM 2012 R16; US 2012 QF)
Sampras defeated Tillström (AO 2000 R64; RG 1994 R16; WIM 1997 R128 + 1998 R64; US 1998 R32)
Leconte defeated Mansdorf (AO 1985 R64; RG 1986 R64; WIM 1987 R64; US 1986 R32)
Federer defeated Kiefer (AO 2006 SF; RG 2004 R64; WIM 2005 R32; US 2005 R16)

So both Federer and Sampras have 3 "Player Slams", and we have 3 players with one "Player Slam" (Nadal, Murray and Leconte).

Wow, very comprehensive! I'm adding that to the OP.

How about 3 different Slam wins? There must be more of those. Involving active players, off the top of my head:

- Federer is one RG away from a Career Murray Slam [possibly all finals]
- Djokovic is one RG away from a Career Nadal Slam [possibly all finals].
- Djokovic is one WB away from a Career Federer Slam.
- Nadal is one AO away from a Career Golden Djokovic Slam.
- Nadal is one USO away from a Career Federer Slam [possibly consecutive, all finals].

I'll try to bump this thread whenever a Player Slam is completed. Djokovic's and Nadal's over Fed are the only ones likely to be completed this year!

Djokovic is one USO away from a Tsonga Slam as well.
Nadal one WB away from a Verdasco Slam.
Fed one AO away from a Feliciano Lopez Slam.
Fed one USO away from a Haas Slam.
Fed one WB away from a Robredo Slam.

I have a feeling that in 5 years time it is possible that nadal and Novak will both have a player slam on each other. Has nadal ever beaten nole at either AO or Wimbledon? If not then I guess its a bit less likely to happen.

Nadal beat Djokovic at Wimbledon in the 2007 SF. So they each need a win in the others best slam. More likely for Nadal to do this than Djokovic, but both have good chances.

I see, well I think novak will eventually beat nadal at the FO and vice versa at the AO.

I think you only should consider GS winners.

It's too easy (and pointless) having a Player Slam against a mug or a mediocre player (like Kiefer)

Bumping this thread for interesting stats. Great thread, OP. Interesting that Pete has player slams despite being a supposed clay court mug.

Bagel slam. I think Roger might have one already.
I think there's already a thread on this and Roger did I believe. And his only slam bagel was to Nadal at FO '08.

Now that the Wimbledon draw is out, I have to say the prospect of new Player Slams being completed is low:

- Federer might complete a Robredo Slam, but for that Robredo would have to get through Janowicz/Hewitt first.

- Djokovic might complete a Federer Slam if they both make it to the final.

So both of those things actually happened!

Fed breaks the tie with Sampras and is now undisputed #1 after completing a Career Robredo Slam.

As for Djokovic, he's completed the Career Federer Slam, which is his first. Curiously, now both Fed and Nole have each other's Slam.

Federer doesn't have a Nadal slam and never will

But if by any chance Nadal would face Roger @US this year he would have a Federer slam for sure
If Federer and Nadal both play like they did at Wimbledon then Fed wins in 4.

It's because Fed and Djokovic kept drawing each other in slam semi finals. Nadal was on the other side of the draw beating guys like Verdasco and Youznhy.

Boring times for the player slam, no new entries after Wimbledon '14.

The only player who might complete a player slam this AO is Nadal, should he beat Djokovic in the final.

About Nadal's "victory" over Novak at Wimbledon: Novak went into the match injured (infected blister) and exhausted (due to rain delays and being up all night with a bleeding blister) and retired at 1 set all.

"I did my best to get on the court really because I was thinking, should I go and play? It was that serious."

If it wasn't a Wimbledon SF, it would have been a walkover.

This one has an asterix next to it.

Fed got a walkover against Haas in WIM07 so his title has an asterisk next to it as well.

Another reason why Djokovic - Federer rivalry is so great (Top 3).
Career mutual slam is a great thing for a riverly, also VERY hard to achieve.

You're in the wrong thread. This is about player slams, not who deserved to win a tournament. Perhaps you could start a new thread for this new topic that you would like to discuss.

Oh well in that case, if Federer didn't tank against Novak 2 years in a row in the USO SF or against Robredo, Nadal would have the player slam against him.

Unfortunately Federer was always aware of this so he elected to lose in the round before to avoid it...

Why are you quoting my post and talking about Federer? My post was about Novak vs Nadal.

I feel for your future self. If he ever looks back at these old forum posts of yours he's going to cringe for weeks.

Well, even if Nadal were to complete the Djokovic Slam, Novak will still have the chance to complete the Nadal Slam in RG.

No, it does not. Just as Wawrinka's AO victory or Novak's WTF 2014 win do not have these so called "aterix" on them.

This is a silly term used by certain members in order to provide excuses when they can't deal with the facts.

Updated OP through RG'15.

For future reference, the following players may complete a Player Slam in the next Wimbledon:

- Tsonga, if he beats Monaco
- Nadal, if he beats Verdasco
- Djokovic, if he beats Verdasco, Murray and/or PHM

Roger Federer now has the Stan Slam

Australian Open: 2011 QF
French Open: 2010 R4 2011 R4
Wimbledon: 2014 QF
US Open: 2015 SF

Has anyone ever beat a player at all 4 slams, the WTF, Olympics and Davis Cup. That is a pretty tricky one with the Olympics being only once every 4 years.

I'm guessing Nadal is the closest against Djokovic. Only at the Australian Open he hasn't won.

It is interesting to read your comments. Your hate for Nadal makes you blind.

Nadal has defeated Federer at 3 Grand Slams: Australian Open, Wimbledon and Roland Garros.

Federer only has defeated Nadal at 2 Grand Slams: Wimbledon and Australian Open.

Nadal leads the H2H over Federer in 2 Grand Slams (Australian Open and Roland Garros), while Federer only leads the H2H over Rafa at 1 Grand Slam (Wimbledon).

Nadal can achieve the Career Federer Slam if he defeats Federer this US Open.

Logical conclusion: Nadal dominates Federer in Grand Slams 9-3 (including 4-3 outside clay). Nadal has won 75% of his GS matches against Federer.

What does this have to do with this thread? Do you even understand the concept of this thread or did you just decide to post unrelated stuff :D

PS: Federer actually leads Nadal 3-2 in GS finals off-clay. ;)
