Pretty clearly it’s players who were greatly talented and who had some memorable slam match wins, but ultimately came up short of making a final.

I remember that match and thinking at the time how mentally fragile those two were. They completely fell apart over what they thought was a bad call. I’m not sure how you conclude from it that they “deserved” to win a Major.

davydenko lost in 2005 french open semifinal in 5 sets against a DOPED player. in 2007 he played really amazing against federer in the semifinal, much better than some players who even won the french open

Players with significantly weaker resumes have reached slam finals. Even Anderson has 2.

That doesn't mean much if the player doesn't show what this class is made of, in tournaments where he should reach his highest level.
I had forgotten about that match.
That is a good reason to give credit to the Russian player.
