Playing with a tennis ball in hand?

Do you play with a ball in your hand? I’ve seen this on the courts and I can’t imagine how it’s comfortable to do this. I use both my hands and arms when I’m striking the ball. Obviously with my two handed backhand, but even when I hit my forehand I have my left arm out as a guide. I wouldn’t want anything to hinder my shot like having a ball in my hand. Is it just me or does that make sense?

I don't do it with my 2hbh, but it was fairly common -and recommended- method in the old days (wood era with 1 hbh as the norm). Two balls in your hand, so if your first serve went in, you kept the other ball in your hand until the point was over.

I find it useful for keeping my left arm up and straight when I hit forehands. I keep lowering it a bit more than I should.

If I’m playing a set or two, no

Well, shorts were a lot shorter and tighter back in the day (70's, early 80's), so it wasn't as easy to get the ball in and out of your pocket.
Yeah it was the marketing of "you will use what we provide" rather than using a little thought to come up with something better.

I remember the old days of keeping a ball in your hand. Shorts and tennis skirts didn't have ball pockets. Some people bough those ball clips. Others kept a ball in their hands. Once I learned a 2HBH I had to start tossing the spare ball behind me into the back fence after my first serve went in.

Pretty sure it was the Pete Sampras era of baggy shorts that brought in the ball pocket as standard gear.

when playing socially i do sometimes.

also for kids who keep using 2hands on the forehand instead of one.. a way to get them to stop doing that is for them to hold a ball with the other hand.

Might be a reason why she didn't hit many bh topspins. Left hand is very important for a one hander in order to keep the hitting arm loose.
Don't believe that was the reason. Look how she is holding that ball... with her last 2 fingers against the base of her thumb. She still has her thumb and her 2 longest fingers to hold the throat of her racket.

I would frequently have an all in hand when hitting a topspin Bh (with a relaxed hitting arm). Don't see why the topspin Bh would be impacted any more than the slice Bh or the serve. Managed to keep my dominant arm relaxed for the serve and any type of Bh.

I've done that since I was a little kid, so I don't even notice the ball is there.
I can't imagine the weight of a tennis ball would affect what your arm does.

on court play, i hold not 'a' ball.........at least 3 as i hate wasting 'down time' ie wasting time to pickup the balls. 5 or 6 in my pocket n 3 or 4 in my hand until run out then hv 2 waste time to pkup balls again n btw most of guys i hit w/ can hardly rally >20 hits especially those te/ge-ers hit everywhere after 1 or 2 hrs hitting n saying arm's hurt.........bagabaga:eek::eek::eek::eek:........dat's why i always say 'the wall's the best', the djoker's famous ytb quote:laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:............

when u c ppl on a court 'playing tennis', simply count their 'on-off' pattern w/ a stopwatch then u'll find those poor bagas aren't hitting but pkingup balls. ~70-80 % time wasted on running around pkup balls, n even worse in those 'social' 1s as they have to talk etcetcetc. much better 2 do dat in a park or cafe or dancing pool or even bed@home or anywhere to 'socialize' each other, manohman mamohman:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D.................

sometimes you can drop the ball in middle of point and claim LET

I use to do it when I was younger and playing on public courts in the city and no more room in my pockets, since anyone would pick up your balls!
Just an amusing aside .... a few weeks back, playing at a nice country club ... league match and we had a match ball in the corner of the court by the fence during a point. After point it was gone ... spectator let us know that a teenager picked it up off out court to hit with it against the nearby hitting wall.

The kid looked so confused as to why we were asking for our ball back ... said, but it was just sitting there so I took it.

He would have had to reach over the albeit short fence to get it. And the spectator didn't tell him not to!
