Please Help with Rule: Team players outside of there city/District (North Carolina)

There is a team in the Men 4.0 division in Greensboro NC that has only 4 of 14 players from the Greensboro area. Most of the players are from VA and the others are from Raleigh/Durham. While they did not win the league, they played a major role in the outcome. Of the two teams that tied for the best record (at 14-1) one lost to this team from outside of the league area and the other lost to the team tied with them.

The question is, can a team be comprised of mostly outside players and if they can’t does the team get DQed or just players is some type of order?

Here is a link to the team in question.

It depends on the local rules established by the League, some leagues allow it others do not allow this. It is fairly common though to have players from all over on various teams.
Check with your local League Coordinator or the local league rules which should be readily available.

JLyon is correct for my area also. My local is defined as a three county area and the county serve as the defining point. A player may play from another local area with prior appraoval from the LLC, which is seldom gratned.

In TN there is no geographical restrictions upon where you play with respect to where you live. Most players in the Chattanooga league live in GA. A lot of Memphis players live in AR or MS.

In Knoxville, a group of us play in both the Knoxville League and the Loudon league (Two separate CTAs - roughly 30 mi from each other). If our team didnt go down there to play - the locals wouldnt have enough players for an actual league schedule.

I believe that our area's rule is that no more than 2 players can reside outside of the State. There is no limit to players outside of the area. I live fairly close to the another area and there are several teams in that area that are composed completely on players from my area.

The teams I've been on have been comprised of individuals from different clubs, different cities, even different states. No big deal, as long as we're all in the same conference (or whatever it's called).

so i assume you are one of the GMPA Parker team?
i think southern-NC was rather lenient with the "resident" policy (unlike NoBadMojo situation)

btw, Harrison's #1 singles player is 30-1 (singles) in 4.0 league play (3-0 in sectional play) and 2-1 in 4.5 league play (singles) the last 3 years (2005-2007). i wonder what his DNTRP is, @ this moment...lol.
or maybe some people are immune?

more

...and if NoBadMojo situation did apply, the singles player i mentioned in my last post, is the last player on their roster, and therefore, the 1st player to be DQ'd as per NoBadMojo's section rule.

=) interesting.

and i just saw that this singles player did win that day, when your team lost the only match of the season, at 2-3...

i don't personally expect USTA to do anything though - 1st, they are rather tough to do anything, and based on his past record, i suspect that he successsfully appeals when he is bumped to 4.5 ...or he's got something that rest of us don't.. (and don't say "game" - for all u tough folks ;) )

Darkblue: You are correct about their #1 player. In fact, I was the one that lost to him. I don't really have any bad feelings about it, as he is a nice person, fun player to play against, and always sportsmanlike on the court. In fact all the players from that team are very cool and we end up playing many of them in NTRP tournaments as the one this weekend, where I will likely see several of them. If they had won the league I would have just said good job, as they are a very strong team when they have their top players on the court.

The only reason why I raised this question, is the fact that with so many of the "top" players coming from 1-3 hours away to play league matches, it really had an effect upon the finial standings. You know, people will do anything to make it to the states ha ha. We lost to them and Gainey won and we beat Gainey. Gainey goes with better number of courts won during season. I am cool with not winning the league as we did give it a good run for the money in a very tough area with lots of teams.

I did get a response from the local coordinator who stated that there was no rule on the books against this type of thing. I am glade these guys are in the league, especially the ones from VA as they have no league there and they are much closer than the Raleigh/Durham area. The Raleigh/Durham area has teams there.

When people do this it can cause a problem. Last season a team won Greensboro and their top two players were from Winston-Salem (about 45 minutes away) and played on a 4.0 team there as well. With both of these teams winning, they played for the Winston team, which left some bad feelings as this was not worked out before. It made a bad situation at the states and left a much weaker team representing Greensboro than the 2nd or 3rd place teams would have been at full force.

I just have a little personal concern as I am the one that has played these two "ringers" the past two seasons.

Oh, and the one that I played this year knows the system. One of his worst scores (7-5 7-5) was to a 3.5 player in Raleigh that has not won a match at 4.0. You do the math. The player that he dropped a set to has won all his other matches at 4.0 but that one. He knows what to do to keep from being bumped. His lone loss this year was in doubles. I do want to play him again, but knowing me, if I beat him I will get bumped.

John,
i share your concern - i don't think your league turned out the way it should have... but while the system remains unchanged, would u be interested in adding a 4.0 rated singles player from the RDU area who went 9-0 in league singles play this season for your next season's roster? ;)

Well, as you can tell, we are right there at the cusp. As we have not lost the doubles part to any team this year so a top singles player would really help. We are a very tight group and socialize and have a few cold ones after every match. We are lossing one or two players next year, but will have all of our money players back.

Go to my profile and send me an email.

By the way, all of our players are from GSO/HP area, so we would be able to add a player from RDU without a problem even if they made a rule. Also, we would need to find out about states as we are really pushing to win it next year (also hoping for a wildcard this year)

john,

i tried sending email thru TW, but it says that you are currently not taking msgs. i've modified my settings such that i can recieve email...

thanks!

There are a couple of guys on the Harrison team that grew up as good friends with Scot and but live/work in the RDU area so that is why they play there.

darkblue, you don't have to go all the way to Greensboro to play on a good team and enjoy a postmatch beer. There's a solid, beer-drinking team right there in Durham that will likely have a spot open next spring. :-)

Chrisplchs: I was not trying to say anything negative about the Harrison team personally. As I said earlier, I am friends with many of them and am very happy they are in the league. I also said that if they had won the City I would be there to say Great Job and win in Pinehurst. I was simply looking for a loop hole to get my team to 15-0. It would not have hurt the Harrison team as they did not win the city (although I do realize it would have hurt the Gainey team, a team that has a couple of members that are on my 4.5 team including their team leader).

DJ and BB are good guys. DJ played in many of their matches and was very important for their wins. BB only played in a couple (He did give the 1 singles player for Williams his only loss of the year). However, when you have people in general playing for multiple teams on different strong teams in different regions and more than one of their teams win, which one they play for can have a major factor in the States. This very thing happened with the Greensboro and Winston teams last year.
