I’m in the midst of watching Ken Burns’ documentary on Country Music and the artist to release the more famous cover of this song is very prominently featured in several of the episode:
Elvis also covered the tune and he got some time in the excellent documentary’s episode covering the 50s when he was at Sun Records in Memphis at the same time Johnny Cash was breaking into the music scene. They were close friends before their careers exploded.
Catch the documentary! It is spellbinding and is streaming free on the PBS website. I’m a little more than halfway through it now (late 60s era episode is about to be my next journey) and I rate it as highly as any of Burns’ other projects.
