i got the idea for this thread from another post

like Most Weeks as No. 1 (currently djok)
Most consecutive weeks as No. 1 (currently Fed)
Most ATP Titles won (Currently Connors)
won all 9 ATP Masters event (only djok)

etc etc

That is I can agree with you but it is still not meaningless, it is one of the few records which even ITF and atp recognize
What is there to disagree, slam are most recognize by everyone including casual fans and year end number one record is recognized by tennis hardcore fans and itf, atp

+ YEno1 records
+ ATP points records
+ WTF records
+ M1000 records
...
Yeah, it all collectively contributes significantly to any ATG comparison, and especially to GOAT debate.

Again if you are hardcore fan you will know the record, just follow it blindly like Connors one.
Slam will always be most important metrics

Depends if you're a casual or a true tennis fan.

For casuals it's all about slams and ye#1, I doubt they're aware of the other tournaments or records, heck I doubt they can name the four slams.

is not it interesting that ATP & ITF are dependents upon each other

ATP needs ITF grand slams
ITF needs ATP ranking to decide seedings of grandslam events

Sorry but as long as I watch tennis these stats were important.
Not who won the most points in months with letter n or some other trivia, but important - slams, titles, no1

When I've started to follow tennis (mid 90s) these stats (weeks at #1, YE #1) were at least on par or one can say even more important than Slam wins, Slam counts etc... ;)

Connors record is irrelevant because no one is going for it. Federer would have gotten it years ago if he wanted, but focused on much more important events instead. There are some other stats that I don't really care about like H2H or winning %, that can be improved (or rather not get worse) by losing early or not playing at all. Weeks, YE#1, ATP Finals, M1000 I find important, but below that level I watch for the game itself, not for the records.

It's interesting that many Rafa's fans are adamant about ITF tournaments: slams, OG and DC. and totally devalues ATP. at the same time they give no value at all to the ITF champ award!

No specific order, No1 spot was very very important, as you said - maybe even more talked about than Slams. Slams were probably nice boost to get to that No1 spot.
Like in every sport - you want to be No1.

muzza sacrificed his career for YE # 1, sampras sacrificed the subsequent AO (did not participate due to exhaustion) for his last YE # 1 (when he played 7 tournaments in a row at the end of the year) and fed said in an interview that he would rather have one more YE # 1 than one additional slam! and nole took the WC to MM last year to insure YE # 1 and he said that the main reason he played paris this year was to secure this year's YE # 1! and there are 4 of last 5 no1 players. rafa has said in an interview that he prefers, for example, 4-5 masters over 1 slam.

In fact i only really care about the tennis being played, movements, strokes, dealing with pressure situations... numbers show consistency and all but i dont get off at all on them, not even grand slam record, i dont care who ends up with more slams, i just like to see players fighting during the year and watch special matches

I feel you! We just don't get much of that anymore.

That's interesting and a serious question. How many masters would you sacrifice for 1 slam? If I had a choice I don't know what I would do because 5 masters will give you more £££ but that slam would put you on a different plane altogether.

They both have some minor injury, they both took time of Paris master to get better for yec
ok i didnt knew that

thnx once again

Tennis wish that will not come true

1) Fed winning one more FO / nadal winning one more AO to complete both DCGS
2) Fed No. 1 for 2 more weeks for total 312 weeks as 2nd male player to be No. 1 for 6 years

When one observes a record just for records' sakes, the appeal is rather limited. A dominant Tiddlywinks player likely garners few flagbearers. The fact that someone 'won a thing' doesn't mean much without an overall interest in the process by which it came to fruition. This can vary even within the domain of a single sport, of course, and the alignment of success with one's intra-sport interests/passions will likely be the main catalyst for one's investment.

Slams all that matter. If atp records mattered mcenroe would not be in same league as connors in eyes of public. We had a borg v mcenroe film. Connors never had one.
Atp records should matter but its been about the slams since Laver really

Well its only been 2021 thats been a shocker year for quality but is rare.most of the best 10 players on tour (nadal federer delpo thiem murray and wawrinka) all are absent most of the year at the same time.
No coincindence perhaps it happned durimg a global pandemic?
Next season will prove much.

Observe the records for sure. But care more about slams than anything else.

Where is the option for not caring about records at all? Some of us just want to watch good matches and not worry about who is the best.
