Dominic Thiem currently has 1 slam.

By the end of his career how will he rank compared to Murray and Wawrinka who each have 3?

The poll will close at the end of 2020.

I love the guy. 2nd fav player behind Rafa. I am worried he may have lost his edge after getting USO. He is not looking great in Vienna and i feel he is a bit one dimensional. If plan a isnt working he has no plan b. Id love to be wrong as i would love him to get loads of majors and keep beating tsitsipas.

I voted 4 or more because I think the big three are towards the end of their careers and Dominic Thiem is still 27 and playing amazing tennis. He has huge weapons.
I think Thiem will beat Djokovic a lot from now on as if he is on he does most things better bar the BH and is fitter.
Thiem will struggle with Nadal i feel and Federer if he comes back even 70 per cent of his best. Obviously after Fedal there are younger players coming through and he will be almost 30 soon.

This year he came close to winning the AO and he won the USO. He also had a lot of success at the FO in recent years. I think he will remain a top player for many years but the only thing I am questioning is his fitness because sometimes he seems too tired and suffering in long matches. It’s weird because he is very fit. But in the last couple of years he seems up there with the Big 3.

Too much Red Bull cannot be good for his health :)
He is not very tennis smart, but he will get better with experience. I think he will win at least 4 slams.

He has solid technique, movement and works hard. He definitely is amongst the top 3 players in the world currently along with Nadal and Djokovic and should be #1 once they start to decline. My prediction is that he will win 5-8 Slams as long as injuries don’t cut his career short.

The guy is choking big finals to Zverev and Tsitsipas, so ... Between 1-3 I would say. Hopefully he steals 1-2 AOs from Novak, that will be the only time I will root for him.

Like most players who are very good but are not Nadal, Djokovic, or Federer, Thiem is likely to struggle with Nadal on clay and Federer on grass/indoor hard/faster outdoor hard if Federer can be close to his best again (for what it's worth, I don't think he can). But I think that Thiem can play Nadal as an equal on pretty much all hard courts, and is obviously heavy favorite against Federer on clay or slower hard courts from here on out. Interested to see how Thiem might do against Nadal on grass. If past is prologue, the surface would favor Nadal there.

Well 2018 US and 2019 AO suggest Nadal v Thiem on hard is a toss up.
On grass Thiem ROS is a huge problem. Needs to learn to block the BH return back instead of trying to drive it. So on grass id go for Nadal.
Agree about Federer it is going to be hard for him now after so long out at his age. It is a shame as we saw in 2019 that on faster courts when he was on he was still the guy.

I think we pretty much agree. It could be that Thiem might develop a slight edge over Nadal on hard courts in 2021, but we'll see whether Nadal can maintain his level. I'm sure he can do so on clay for years to come, but it can be harder to keep doing well outside one's favorite surface.

I know it was only a 500 event but Nadal looked good in Acapulco. Thiem is very inconsistent form wise which is fatal v Nadal. Thiem against Medvedev at USO looked unbeatable. Then he threw in the Zverev match. Thiem against Rafa at AO was outstanding then in the final v Djokovic missed his DTLBH all match.
If Rafa plays Thiem in a HC final id back Nadal. In a SF i think its a coin toss. On hard.
Grass is all about Thiem. If he can sort the ROS out he can win W. He has to stand up closer to baseline though. Whether he is confident to adapt his style i am not sure. The Big 3 and Murray did have the ability to change their game of need be. I dont see that with other players at the moment.

Thiem is one of my favourite players on tour but he isn’t exactly known for his ability to close the deal. Rafa is likely going to be the favourite at RG till Dominic is at least 28-29 years old and I’m just not sure if he can win a HC slam with the big 3 present in the business rounds; he sure as hell has to play better than he did in the USO finals this past year. At Wimbledon, his game simply doesn’t suit the slick grass at all and it clearly hinders him a lot. He’ll have to make major tweaks to his game or I don’t see him being too competitive there.

Also, guys like Medvedev, Stefanos, Shapo and Zverev will probably start catching up to Thiem as they all begin entering their primes soon the same way Djokodal caught up to Federer as Fed’s age gap with Djokodal is similar to Thiem’s age gap with the next gen.

Thiem has more than enough talent and drive to win another slam. I have no doubt, he’ll win at least 3 more.

I said Thiem was ATG potential on my two accounts ago when he was going toe to toe against Djokovic in the AO20 final. I stand by it. However, he will need to get lucky as he is not good at Wimbledon and Nadal can dominate FO for some time to come. He should put all his focus into the longevity of his career so he can pick up slams in the Big3-less timeframe. My serve was also pretty good when I used to play tennis.

I think he's in a good position to win several slams in the future, being a top 4 contender in hard/clay.

Dunno how many, but 4 seems like a good low estimate.

Of course he could bust a knee and retire tomorrow, but let's hope not.

I too like Thiem, but strongly disagree with your statement!! He has a solid plan b,

Plan b) Hit the ball harder
Plan c) Only slice the backhand when under pressure in Major Final 5th sets?

Seriously, though, I find Thiem's 1-hander to be more robust than most others. Clearly it's a weapon, but it's usually good on defense. That's what worries me about Tsitsipas's long-term future, actually - his 1HBH backhand return and 1HBH backhand defense just feel suspect for me.

1 more HC Slam in near future and 1 clay Slam much later.
He's already showing signs of physical decline, and that's the only edge he has over the next generation of players; he outlasts all of them despite all being bad match-ups for him. So I don't see his window staying opened beyond 2022. And sadly for him, Nadal still requires etfort beyond human capabilities to be taken down at RG, so clay slam is definitely out of the equation as it seems right now.

I'm feeling 3 slams total. He should be able to vulture a couple more after age finally catches up to the Big 3, but by then he'll be an elder statesman himself and likely won't be able to hold off the younger generation for more slams beyond that. He doesn't really have the tactical smarts to enable any kind of dominant run even during the upcoming power vacuum.

An ATG would have beaten Djokovic in that final.

ATG really? Are you kidding me?

An ATG would have won AO vs Novak. Maybe even a F.O vs Nadal.
Most importantly, an ATG would NEVER have needed a WTA serving Zverev to choke and to win barely in 5 sets.

Thiem NEVER WAS and NEVER WILL be an ATG. Ever. He is not even going to be a great player most likely.
He may win a slam or 2 more - but he lacks mental strength and fortitude. These attributes can never be taught.
You can know when you see a great player - and Thiem sure as hell isn't one.
