I went back and read Jack's thread about losing fat, and the advice there is to lift four times a week. Just wondering how often people here actually lift ?

3-4 times a week,if you are busy you can go 2 times a week, but once a week doesnt do much good.

Once a week is just fine-remember, it's quality or quantity. You can go to the gym and work 16+ sets, targeting your whole body but the flipside is that you will need more recovery time the following couple of days (which amounts to: no tennis).

Never. I own two surgical tubes, and I work out with them, instead than in a gym. Also biking, running and jumping ropes.

Never had the need to go to the gym ;)

Its weird but during the season, I dont have enough time with school and practice to go to the gym. And I have two 20 lb dumbbells that I end up using. So my arms are much stronger than other parts such as my pecs, and legs. Not that they are weak just not as big as if I were benching etc.

With the two 20lb dumbbells I just do alot of reps and about 3 sets of each exercise. Sometimes ill do pushups but they hurt my body a bit. Crunches on the ground kill my back, I really dont like them, I wish i could find another ab exercise.

How often each one of us hit the weight room might depend on what our physical (and mental) needs and objectives are, more than other factors. It depends on your age and your current fitness level. There's also the genetic factor: if you are lucky to be born a mesomorph then you won't need as much effort as an endomorph to be physically fit for a demanding sport as tennis is.

Right now I'm lifting weight 5 days a week, with extraordinary results in my game! :)

When I was lifting strictly for the purpose of getting as big and strong as possible, I was focusing on heavy weight and low volume and would lift 2x per week.

Now that I'm lifting for tennis, I use lighter weight, higher reps, and lift about 4x per week.

For anyone interested in hiring an online trainer that will train you in a similar way to how pros train, check out pisanitraining.com. It's working great for me.

I am in 8th grade and P.E, is hard at my school, i have the second fastest quarter mile wth 5:34. also we start off with fifteen double count jumping jacks 15 push-ups, mountain climbers, triple count, straddles and 30 crunches. some times we do more. your quarter mile is 5 minutes and 34 seconds?.......you understand that is over a 20 minute mile right? I think you are mistaken.

In season: 2x / week. Play tennis 3-4 days a week.
Winter: 3x / week. Play tennis once a week.

Rest days are very important....

Maybe he is really slow :D

In 9th grade I ran a 58 second 400 m (1/4 mile) so I am pretty sure he ran faster 5 minutes and 34 seconds. You could crawl faster than that. :)

My question isn't how many days you work out, but how can you play tennis well on the day of, or the day after working out? My answer is that I can't.

I used to lift 3-4 times a week, but it kills my game, so now I work out 1-2 times a week, but only if I know I'm not playing tennis the next day. Rarely, I will lift after I play later on in the day, but it's hard to find the time between work, sleep, and my wife pestering me.

You are right if you play a lot of tennis it is hard to have enough time + energy to do both.I play tennis 6 days a week + lift 3 times a week the least i will go is 2 times + sometimes 4.If i dont lift enough i will get injured more easily. So if nothing else i do at least maintenance+ work areas i need to keep strong such as wrists, arms, shoulders ,abs+back.I do legs but is harder to work them to much because they are always trying to recover from tennis. One thing i found was when i have to lift the same day that i am playing i lift before i play+i dont think it bothers me much.I know one thing i have tried even after a nap to lift after tennis+it doesnt work.Tennis takes to much out of me to do any kind of a good workout.

When I was in my 20s this was less of a problem. I'm almost 50 and it really makes a difference. First, determine your priorities: Are you lifting to help your tennis? Are you playing tennis for aerobic conditioning (to help your lifting)?

For me, it's the former. And I have learned that (past 40) my body *needs* rest days. So I will lift on the same day as tennis, but only *after* playing tennis. (My "touch" is laughable if I reverse the order ... unless I have at least six hours between lifting and playing. Then my touch is only "off".)

We are not all the same. Figure out what works for you. My summer schedule is:
M - Lift
T - Early AM Tennis (Drill Day)
W - Rest day -- no Tennis; no Lifting
T - Lift (My serious lifting day.)
F - Tennis (preferably both Early AM and Afternoon)
S - Tennis
S - Rest (Unless it's a Tourney Weekend.)

As KK mentioned, it is recommended by top tennis trainers to workout AFTER tennis if both are done on the same day.

I've also found that heavy lifting doesn't mix well with tennis, especially on the lower half of the body. As directed by a good trainer, I've been focusing on lower weight, higher reps, and have been mostly relying on interval work for leg strength.

I've been working out 3-4 days per week along with playing tennis about 5-6 times without much of a problem. With my previous style of lifting, I was having trouble keeping up with tennis and lifting 2x/week.

3 times a week:

Mon - Curls/Arms/Backs/Shoulders

Wed - Legs - upper and calves

Fri - Chest

5 times a week must take a lot of willpower, my respect to those who do.
