The French must be channeling a Seer. Too bad that Seer did not say anything about the current rates of infection in France, Spain and Italy. I think that by End of Summer, we may see a slowing of infection rates. It is foolish to say that the FO will be played in September. Putting out feelers would have been a more adult response. But we are talking about the FFT.

Me personally I have always felt that the French Open should be the first slam of the year followed by Wimbledon, Australian Open, and ending with the US Open. Australian open to kick off the hard court season and US to end it.

It's not ideal, but I think saving the major and the integrity of the Slam race is more important

Which is true. If Federer as an individual or an organiser loses money in Laver Cup then there is no issue. FO is in no manner liable to taking decisions according to his interests.


However ATP (Or the WTA) is also invested in Laver Cup and small events during that time, If they are going to lose money because of FO, then rest assured there are huge complications coming.

Why? Main concern should be the safety of all people involved. Second concern should be to play all 4 Slams this year. So if the virus unables the event to take place in May/June, then trying to find another date is perfectly right.

And while you mention Federer, why should especially his fans be against it? He would have been absent at the normal date and now he has a chance to participate. What is not to like about this?
 
Ranking system is the ATP ranking system. If it's not in the ATP calendar, there will be no points.

First step in getting rid of the least important slam for good. Dirt tennis is almost a separate tour for the Christian Garins of the world now, may as well formalise it.

One of my best mates employs half a dozen coaches. A few years after poly came in we discussed how it was changing the game. I had spent 6 months in Czech teaching grinders to volley and we talked about how completely alien the concept of attacking tennis was to the kids, their parents and indeed their very qualified coaches. That was over 2 decades ago and those kids have been the pros of the last 10 years.

My mate went and spent a lot of time in Spain, playing and seeing how they coached kids to be grinders. He has employed almost exclusively European coaches for over 10 years. Most of them can't volley to save their lives. The kids play on heavily sanded artificial grass and clay courts. The reason is that this is the best preparation for playing the grinding, baseline botting tennis with poly and dead slow courts.

On this, both he and I agree with Rochie completely and have done for years. The best way to prepare young players for the boring homogenised tennis of today is the same way Europeans do it.

Every couple of months we get together and play the tennis we love on a proper fast grass court. I don't play on his courts, they are sh1t.

As there is no desire to bring any variety back to the current tour, the next best thing would be to split the tour and have one for boring tennis and another for attacking tennis. Rochie doesn't have that luxury of that wish, his job is to prepare players for the reality of the cr@p we have now.

Let me remind you that grass court tennis has became a niche surface and because of that Wimby is the least important slam.
Grass-courts have (almost) died out in Australia & America, and in Europe only a few countries have grass courts.
I think that the ATP grass season should be eliminated, because it's unfair competition. Only very few kids/players have an opportunity to play on grass courts in their home countries because grass courts don't exist.

Wimby is actually a social event, where British celebrities compete against each other.
The Telegraph, July 2017: "For two weeks every summer, all eyes are on Centre Court for the most gruelling battle of the year. No, not the tennis - but the fight to become champion of the Royal Box. Politicians, celebrities and actual Royalty all ruthlessly jostle to become king or queen of Wimbledon. They score points with their outfits, seating positions, and how many front pages they can hog. Competition has been particularly fierce this year...."

So how come French players do better at Wimbledon than they do at Roland Garros (2 Slam champions in the last 2 decades versus 1 champion and 1 finalist over 30 years ago) if it's so difficult for them to practice on grass?

How come European players like Federer, Nadal and Djokovic have all racked up multiple Slams on a surface you say they get no chance to practice on?

How come Spanish players like Santana and Martinez ("grass is only fit for cows") managed to win the grasscourt Slam (claycourt specialist Martinez' ONLY Slam)?

Bad idea in my opinion. There is no guarantee that there will any tennis or any sport for at least for rest of this year. They just rearranged it in hope/desperation really.

Plus scheduling 2 slams on different surfaces that close is crazy. I guess they have limited options though but I don’t think they should have rearranged as they don’t know what the state the world is still gonna be in by then. They should have just cancelled it.

In other words, he's quite comfortable playing on grass especially in the second week.
 
Rescheduling is the right idea and will almost certainly need to happen given how France is likely to be come late May. But I think the French Federation actually did their cause more harm than good by coming out with a hasty, ill-thought-through plan without consulting any of the major stakeholders in tennis in September except, apparently, for one single player, whose opinion on the matter apparently weighs much more than the ATP’s or WTA’s. Poor form, but hopefully the different organizations can work out something amenable for everyone.

Great decision by the tournament organizers. All Majors should be played. Some of the Masters can go.

Extreme situations require taking extreme measures. I approve.

I would have no problem with the change of RG term, if the RG promoters consulted its draft with ATP / WTA, ITF, other grandslams, etc. But instead of diplomacy, they chose power. For me arrogant procedure, which caused confusion on the tennis scene.

But if the field of players is weak, tired, and has no clay preparation, it changes the validity of the event and makes it feel like it's being played just for the sake of it. plus it may also screw with the strength of the US open as claycourters opt to drop that event.
