This again proves how important slams are. Whatever zverev achieves, he will forever be underachiever until he wins that slam.

Why?

Because you dont win slams by accident. You can win a best of 3 set masters where big players have either skipped or are not in form. No such leniency in slams. Everyone will show up. And in course of 5 sets, the stronger player will eventually take the win.

Wawrinka not only won 3 slams, he won it beating djoker at the time where no one else could

This numbers Doesn't mean much.
Let me give you result.
Wawrinka
- 2014 AO champion beating Nadal in finals and Djokovic in quarter final
2015 FO champion beating Federer in quarter finals and Djokovic in final
2016 USO champion beating Djokovic in finals and Andy Murray in quarter final.

Zverev is a big flop in grand slams. And beating a past prime old Wawrinka doesn't give much credit

I love Stan but let’s be serious, not even once did he manage to beat Zverev and they played against each other 5 times, going back to 2016 when Stan was in his prime and Zverev was still in his teens.
That's a matchup. A statistically & qualitatively better tennis player can have a negative H2H because the opponent's game doesn't suit him.

What’s weird about Stan is that all of his big wins happened in a 2 2/3 year span.

From December 30, 2013 through the 2016 USO, Stan won all 3 of his majors and his lone Masters. Better yet, he went 11-0 in all finals during this time frame, which includes 4-0 vs the Big 3.

Outside of this time frame, he went 5-15 in finals.

Stan’s entire list of big accomplishments happened in a minuscule 2 2/3 year span.
He already had great showings starting at the AO13 at least.

Three slams is just too big a gap to compare the two. I do think Zverev has had a better career than many 1 slam champions though.

I understand matchups but 5-0 is a bit extreme in my opinion. Stan should have at least managed to beat Zverev once in my opinion.

If Zverev gets to 2 slams, then the conversation can start.

The 1 slam deficit can potentially be overcome by multiple YECs, OG and MS titles even if he has been playing in a weaker era for most of his peak/prime. That's why I personally put someone like Murray over Courier, despite being a slam short.

Stan was not good outside of the majors and his WL% backs that up throughout his career.

Just like Djokovic wawrinka is a matchup. No one on ttw is fooled that the best win in all of Stan's matches was vs Djokovic. He could beat the other guys (Nadal did get injured in set 2) but it was on Djokovic to stop stan. He failed due to his own limits.

Had Wawrinka found the right coach for him like Norman waw we would talk about him as the 4th Big 4.

His ceiling was much higher than Zverev's and he was on another planet mentally.

Wawrinka's prime lasted about 4 years as he was a late bloomer.

Imagine if he found the right coach for him earlier. This debate wouldn't even exist.
He found many right coaches. The guys mentality is definitely a question. I would not overrate this stuff at all. He had good matchup vs Nole due to 1 handed slice plus insanely heavy backhand

A three slam difference can next to never be made up for, especially not if we are talking a zero slammer here (the difference between 0 and 1 slam is bigger than between any other one slam gap). As good as Zverev is outside of the slams there is no way anyone will prefer his career over Stan’s.

I never thought of that... you're right he probably does have a matchup advantage against Nole. I wonder if he could still beat Nole today.
