Poly Main/Gut Cross

I've heard so many great things about having a Gut main and a Poly cross, I mean even Fed uses it, but what about a Poly Main and a Gut Cross? How does that work?

I've heard of using a poly main, and a synthetic gut cross, but never poly main and natural gut cross. Then again, natural gut just isn't very popular in my area.

I'm not sure if that set up is logical because natural gut might not allow for enough snapback from the poly mains. I'm sure one of our esteemed TT members can elaborate.

At the end of the day, like most things in tennis, the equipment just has to work for that individual, and it doesn't have to make sense to others.

But on the other hand, the notion that poly mains/gut crosses got Murray to #1 has as much merits as saying Kyrios is going to be a role model for kids.

From a recreational standpoint, the cost of having gut crosses doesn't justify the value and performance vs. a syn gut or multi cross.

For pro's, cost or value is not a factor when determining their set ups, so why not play with the best of the best.

I tried poly mains/gut crosses. It was the longest lasting combo I ever tried. It lasted 3 months until I got elbow pain and had to cut them out. The gut masks the poly going dead.

Do I need to restring my syngut mains when it's time to restring the co poly crosses ?

I've just recently went to poly mains and SynGut crosses with the crosses strung > then mains. I'm looking for a bit more comfort and pocketing compared to a full bed of poly.

Ok I'm going to also do a co poly main and syn gut crosses

I finally got to hit today with Revolve 17 mains and Gosen Micro Sheep crosses. Mains were 52 and crosses were 57. It definitely added more crispness and power. The only bad thing was that I lost a good bit of spin. I think I'm going to swap the Revolve out for Cyclone Tour and see if I can get more bite.

What if you were to reverse the strings ?

Isn't Micro Sheep a cheapo syngut? I think you're going to be disappointed with that string no matter what you do with it.

I am considering using babolat tonic+ in my crosses and deciding between luxilon alu power 16l or solinco hyper g for my mains. Any suggestions?

Dropped two frames down to my stringer and asked for vs team mains/Rslyon crosses. He messed the whole thing other way around and now I have 2 fames with poly mains/gut crosses. Will hit today and see how it feels/plays.

It is inexpensive but I think it's a great value for a SynGut. Any other particular brand that's better? I've only used Prince, Wilson, and Gamma before. They all play pretty equal.

He owes you a refund. It's going to be completely different as the mains always seem to be the dominant string in a hybrid.

Don't forget there's kirschbaum synthetic gut that's cheap and plays like prince tournament syngut without the duraflex from what I hear . I use kirschbaum strings in my youtek speed pro 18x20. I have been using the pl ll 17g crosses / syn gut main 17g. I like that pocketing and power from the pl ll crosses . But for plx 17l I'm trying in the mains and syn gut crosses because plx shines the most from crisp/ control .

I would try a multi like Vanquish before syngut. Babolat Origin is very nice, but it aint cheap.

Why multi? If you are used to syn gut and the touch and finesse of syn gut then having a hybrid with co poly and syn gut makes sense

Ok I have a racquet in my fav configuration the plx (1.20) mains / syn gut (1.25) crosses and it's all that I ever wanted from the plx

I haven't tried pl ll in mains / syn gut crosses but I love the configuration of syn gut mains / pl ll crosses because of the ball pocketing and drives .

@Holliman said he was switching from a full poly to find more comfort and ball pocketing. I think any decent multi does a way better job than any syngut will for that task.
