Poly main / Syn cross Hybrid Users....

For those of you who use poly mains and synthetic crosses in a hybrid, what tensions do you use for each?

For the longest time I've strung my synthetic crosses (Gosen Micro Super 1.25 or Gosen Sheep 1.22) three pounds tighter than my poly mains (Tour Bite 1.20, but most recently Solstice Power 1.20)...usually around 47m/50c. Just interest in hearing how every else strings up a poly main/syn cross hybrid.

Thanks for any input!

Unfortunately, you might not find a lot of info as people are moving away from poly/nylon hybrids. When I play with a poly/synth hybrid I tend to use a round main, and string the crosses lower to cut down on the mains getting stuck. Have you ever tried flipping the mains and crosses around? You’ll find more comfort, and spin, at the price of some durability. You could also try a full bed of poly strung several pounds looser in an attempt to get more comfort.

47M/50C is not what I would use. Issue is tension maintenance. The SG will hold tension much better than the poly mains. The final result if you are looking for spin, is a lack of spin because the mains do not slide that well anymore once they drop tension. If you wish to continue poly mains/SG cross, try 50M/45C. I have played the hybrid the other way with POSG mains and SPPP crosses. SPPP holds tension well for a poly. Very much so like POSG. My tensions were 53 POSG 16 mains and 49 SPPP 16 crosses. Did not like the hybrid anymore than using full bed POSG. Old reptiles don't hit with enough spin to use poly. :D

I'm really liking Cyber Flash 1.25/Kirsch SG 1.25 in my MW signature racquet. The CF is really 1.23mm, per Tennis Industry Magazine. CF mains have been my go to for over 10 years. Funny thing though the mains don't return to center very well when you force it with your fingers, but if you look down at your strings between points you'll see that they are staying straight. CF/KSG is a great setup for a frame that brings plenty of feel to the table. ex: My Biomimetic 200 gives you the feel of just the strings. CF mains/multi crosses sort of disappeared in that racquet. Now I have KSG/Plus Power in the BM200. The muted strings are at home there.

Really? I've only been gone a year and so much has changed :D

I have not tried flipping the two but strange you should mention that...I was hitting with the young man who strings my racquets Saturday and he said the exact same thing! If I do that should I try and move away from the shaped polys (Tour Bite, Solstice, RPM Blast, etc.) that I've been using? I think the only round poly I have on hand is Wilson Revolve.

I've tried a full Tour Bite 18g set up at around 42 pounds and just didn't care for it at all...at least in the Pure Strike racquet I tried it in.

Thanks for the input!

Thanks for the explanation....makes a lot of sense. Not sure why I've been stringing them wrong for so many years!

LOL....if I ever get to the point where I can't use "junk" on all my shots I might as well hang up my racquets!!!

A buddy of mine has been using Cyberflash ever since it first came out. He's been trying to replace it with something better ever since it came. He hasn't found anything!!!

I appreciate all the help everyone!

Yes, a lot has changed in the last few years. When I was first playing tennis, I used a variety of round and shaped poly's strung 2-5 pounds looser than OGSM crosses. When I play with setups similar to what I used as a teenager, I can't help but wonder why I thought those hybrids were good for my game. Don't get me wrong, string setups are entirely subjective, and you might hate what I love, but setups with poly mains and soft crosses just don't work for my spinny game.

If you were to switch to Gosen mains, I think you could get away with RPM Blast crosses if that's your preference, but Revolve might be a better option. Diadem and Solinco that you mentioned would both destroy a nylon main.

I've been using the poly mains (usually Tour Bite) and synthetic crosses (always Gosen) for years and years and have been able to get amazing spin out of this set up. With that being said, maybe it's just because I haven't tried anything else (except for all poly) to see if more spin is available with a different set up.

Here is my string testing plan right now (to compare to my 47/50 poly/syn set up I currently have):
1) Poly Mains (Tour Bite or Solstice Power) with Synthetic Crosses (Gosen OG Sheep Micro 1.22mm) at 50/45
2) Synthetic Mains (Gosen OG Sheep Micro 1.22 or Gosen OG Super 1.25) with Poly Crosses (Wilson Revolve 1.25) at 52/48
3) Natural Gut Mains (Klip Pro Legend 1.30) with Poly Crosses (Wilson Revolve 1.25) at 55/50

Thanks for the input!

Any feedback for us on your experiments.

I've also trended away from tensioning a poly main lower than a syn. gut cross, but that's probably because I often use a rather light gauge (1.20mm) poly main in the hybrids I do for a few locals. That lighter poly can turn softer more quickly that thicker stuff with a bit more backbone right out of the box (or off the reel), so it doesn't need a lower initial tension.

I also string for a lady who is a former D-I rock star and can still knock the snot out of the ball. She likes a 1.25mm poly main/16 ga. syn. gut cross layout in her Graphene Radical Pros all tensioned at 58 lbs. So there's that.

Unfortunately not yet...life has seem to have gotten in the way!

Son got a part in a play so practices for him, Hurricane Florence hit, had to have an MRI due to some vision/balance problems, and then my wife's birthday.

Supposed to rain this week so hopefully next weekend I can finally get out!
