Poly Main with Rip Control Cross

I'd think the poly in the crosses would play better, especially for spin. RIP Control mains would move easily on a slippery poly cross. Not as good movement with a RIP cross.

That makes sense I will try your suggestion.

Why are you changing?

Now that I’m playing outside I need a better control set up. I’ve found When I mix a multi or syn. with poly I get better control than a full poly set up.

When the sun is on the court and breezy the ball flys around to easily, I want to be able to take full cuts and keep the ball in and not have to hold back.

Sorry, still confused (me ... not you).

You play with kevlar/poly (UC) ... is that a indoor only setup?

Is fb poly more control than kev/uc?

What fb poly?

Wouldn't fb poly be more control than poly/multi or multi/poly?

Indoors I was using full alu power with a 18x20 radical. Then I switched to a prestige rev pro with a 16x19 and the full poly was a little to powerful for my liking so I went with the Kevlar poly set up. Which I’ve been using outside also but sometimes with the dead feel of Kevlar I can’t serve as well it’s like I don’t get enough feel for the serve.

I know according to most full poly has the most control but that’s not what I have found. When brand new it’s great but after a couple of hours it’s not near as good. But when I mix a multi or syn. gut with poly I get much better control that lasts for a much longer time.

When I use a hybrid like this I can use lower tension and still have better control than full poly at a higher tension. Right now I’m all the way down to 64 lbs. lol

Got it ... play over duration rather than just off the stringer.

I haven't played Rip C, but I don't see it beating velocity as a cross if you want the slicker multi. If a main, rip c supposedly has some texture, so that might be a factor.

@Traffic and @Dartagnan64 and @TenFanLA have played both velocity and rip c ... maybe they will chime in.

I just got a set of velocity in yesterday and will try it soon.

I played with RIPC in the mains and Cream in the cross. I liked how RIPC played. It gave me what I wanted; more spin. But sometimes what I want and what I need are two different things. LOL. I was getting much better spin than Velocity in the mains. Control was still good. But that spin is addicting. Soon, I was banking on the spin and taking healthier cuts on the ball. My form started to suffer a bit. I think that, and I was playing a lot of tennis in a short amount of time. My elbow got real sore.

Also, RIPC tended to lose bite fairly quickly. About 5hrs. The wicked topspin started to wear off.

Are you leaning toward multi/poly or poly/multi?

You string yourself right? I have read that rip c sucks to string. ???

Are you kidding I definitely string myself otherwise I would be broke. I’m still experimenting right now so not sure which way to go. Years ago when I was trying hybrids I found that a multi in the main with a poly cross gave the best control. But not as much spin as with the poly in the main.

It’s been a while since I’ve used RC but I do remember good spin from it, but what I liked the best about it was the great control it gives. There is a built in restricted flight in RC. Today I’m going to try the RC in the main with ALU cross and my other stick has ALU in the main with RC crosses.

I haven't played poly/sg for a long time, and then only a couple of times. I did not see the point of rpm/sg or proline 2/sg over fb rpm at the time .. lost most of the spin and didn't gain enough comfort (didn't have any elbow issues back then).

Played multi/poly (velocity/cream) and it was more spin than rpm/sg based on memory ... and different racquets.

Your main thing is spin ... maybe your smallest change/test would be rip c/poly ... whatever poly you are most used to as a cross (maybe UC).

My guess is a multi|sg cross will never make you happy because you are used to poly cross. Velocity is a comfortable poor man's version ... but you can't match a poly cross with a multi. It works for me because I hit less spin, and it's better on flatish drives.

Good thing you string ... welcome to rabbit hole.

The only time I used Rip Control as a cross was with Monogut ZX mains. To put it bluntly, it was a train wreck. It was super low powered and I didn’t even get much spin from it. It was even lower powered than full bed Rip Control, and Monogut ZX is a powerful string. This setup was dead. I can’t explain what type of interaction was going on, but whatever it was, it wasn’t good.

FXP has a lower S-S COF than RC. RC has a slightly higher S-B COF than FXP. If you want more snapback [sounds like you do], trial FXP.

I tried (RC 17)/(Gamma SG 17 w/o WG) @58/58 in my Biomimetic 200. This SG is slippery and known for good spin properties. It was nice and comfortable and had very good bite, but the response off the string bed was way too quick for me. Maybe a poly cross would give it a more deliberate hit. Anyways, thumbs up for an RC main.

I'll have to check my stringing log book, but I think I strung pretty low (similar to my V/C) like in low 50s. That might make a difference.

I strung them higher because they're soft and 17 gauge. The response would probably be more comfortable at a lower tension, but it might get over-powered. If you used a poly cross, that would help cut down on the power at a lower tension.

I absolutely love the power level of Rip Control. But I think it becomes boardy real quick, and also feels a tad stiff when strung at higher tension, 55+. Now that you mentioned it, I will try Rip Control mains with Zyex cross. That may soften up the bed :)

It might be I like a low power set up so I can take cave man swings at ball.

We are all just matching our swing speeds and style of play. It's all a matter of degree. Trust me ... I want a control setup or Velocity wouldn't be working for me.

One of my favorite hybrids of all time was Luxilon Ace mains with Rip Control crosses. It was one of the best things I've ever tried. Reasonable power along with spin and control that made everything I hit go in. I was really excited about it. That was until it broke after just a few hours of hitting. I never played it again because it was clear that Rip Control as a cross with poly wasn't going to work out very well. The poly open up the ribbon outer wraps too quickly and it had no chance once the nylon fibers were exposed.

But if you don't break strings I would certainly recommend trying it once just to see if it would last long enough for you. It was amazing.

I have played with RIP as a Full bed and also combined with Velocity as both a main and cross.

RIP in a fb was similar to fb Velocity. RIP mains with Velocity crosses was better than vice versa. Origin mains with Velocity crosses was better than both.

I found RIP frayed as a cross and lost spin enhancement quicker than Velocity did as a cross. RIP grabs the ball better as a main than Velocity does. But i found RIP lost tension and comfort faster than Velocity and way faster than Origin.

So long story short. RIP is a good string in a FB but its longevity isn't what I like. As a hybrid, its inferior in performance and comfort to Origin/V. Might be slightly more spinny but low powered and short longevity.

I have one more set of RIP that I'm going to string in my new POG OS as a full bed. That's a more powerful frame than I'm used to so I think a more muted control string like RIP might do well. We'll see.

I hit tonight with one racket with RC main with alu power x’s and the other with alu power main with RC x’s. They both played well but I the think I liked the one with the RC main better. Which surprised me I thought it would be the other way around.

I’ve used ace before and liked it and it makes sense that ace and RC would be a good hybrid, I will give it a try.

Interesting! I too find RipC to lose comfort quickly in fb. It plays so well for a couple of hours, and suddenly, it's stiff. I've always had good results with RipC, when I play matches. It's very good for return of serve, poly like depth control for me :)

Origin plays comfortably until it breaks.

Agree that RIP can lose comfort. But I found it was good for about 10 hrs.

Played this morning with FB RIP in my new POG 107. Played really nicely at 58 lbs. Plush and just the right amount of power and spin. Little errant on serves and volleys but baseline strokes were a weapon. That may be the frame more than the string.
Arm feels ok.

Still think Origin/Velocity is a superior combo for comfort, spin and control. FB RIP is a bit more muted and less comfy but still beats poly.
