PolyTour Rev, exceeding expectations

I recently asked the local tennis shop for an alternative to Solinco Confidential 1.20, and they recommended PolyTour Rev because it’s got a little more speed and longevity.

I was looking for something more lively, so it sounded like a great choice. After hitting with it a few weeks in my TF40 18x20 rackets, I actually loved it. It just seems to have so much spin, from SnapBack, maybe not bite. It also seems to have more playability for longer, getting more powerful but not yet bottoming out or becoming dead like Confidential at 16 or so hours. I’m using the 1.2 gauge in white at 50lbs, and so far 20+ hours seems like the usable life.

Doing some research, seems like most people say it’s over priced and has a lot of marketing hype, but that didn’t seem true for me. As a materials engineer by trade, I can see how the silicone infused technology would work well, but know polymers are often temperamental based on environmental and mechanical factors.

Has anyone else tried this recently? Is it just a better fit for my racket, or perhaps they tweaked the formula a bit?

One other theory is that I’ve always had Confidential strung by shops at 50lbs, but I’ve started doing stringing myself with a drop weight machine. Maybe I’m under tensioning it the Rev?

poly tour rev is a good string. that said, the reason i didn't end up using it when i finished setting up my new sticks:
-- I liked rpm rough better. this is a subjective feel thing. if you look at the specs on TWU string db, you'll see they are super similar.
-- the playability window in which i liked rev was much shorter than my other test strings. i've never played with confidential, but my only critical comment on rev is playability duration. (this doesn't appear to be an issue for you though, which means I'm not surprised you're liking it so much :))

Rev purple 1.25 seemed like a very stable string to me, like most Yonex strings; I actually wanted it to loosen up just a little, as it seemed to ‘hold‘ tension so well.

did you use it as a main/cross or full?

contemplating using it as a main with poly tour fire crosses. Normal setup is Solinco Revolution mains and Fire crosses.

I’ve used all the colors and while I feel they are very good I can’t tell all that much difference from regular old poly tour pro which is way cheaper, so I just stick with that.

Used the Yonex Polytour Rev 1.25 white as crosses with Head Lynx Tour 1.25 (champaign) in the mains. This string is so slick, I gave me that extra portion of spin, tensions maintenance was also great.

I saw a youtube video hating so hard on polytour rev I was super confused. It was also highly recommended by my coach and some other youtubers but anyways I decided to give it a spin. Absolutely loved it at 52 pounds on my Ezone Tour. Probably my favorite string, ALU Power being a close second.

I just played rev 1.20 and confidential 1.20 last weekend back to back only one hit per string job in my EZ98.. Rev was way better. That being said, I think confidential 1.25 is better than Rev 1.20 overall, especially for playability duration. They're pretty similar otherwise besides Rev being considerably softer.. I also have strung with Rev 1.25 in the past month and it's not as good as confidential 1.25.. ymmv obv but Rev being marketed as a spin string is why I think it gets some flack. It plays more like a round string.. like someone else wrote it's kinda close to PTP. Soft, very predictable stringbed and decent spin. If money was no object I'd string up with Rev 1.20 every week.

PT rev is underrated I think. I reccomend to the RPM blast and 4G crowd. Most are really satisfied. If not all in my experience

i find it quite similar to RPM, got a nice coating to it but stiff. its softer than RPM for sure and gives me a little more feedback and feel

PTP does have quite a bit more feel imo but I like both

Do people like the spin generation from polytour rev? My coach didn't notice any difference on my shots compared to when I had the ALU (and people are usually bothered by my spin :p)

Does anyone feel significant difference with white and orange color? Is it just me or does the white one feel like a plastic?

Could be a number of reasons that contributed to that... cold weather, tighter string job, break in period, etc.

I have tried all three colors and have reels of the white color in both 1.25 and 1.20. I actually struggle to find significant differences between the color this string comes in. The Rev does play like a completely different string if you string it just a bit too tight though (mid to high 50s really ruins this string). On the other hand, I find the Black and Grey color Poly Tour Strike to have a completely different feel

If you're pulling 50 on a DW and your shop uses a Baiardo, you're probably getting a softer dynamic tension and that's what you're responding to.

But PT Rev is a good string.

Can you expound on the strike differences? I’ve played blue and grey and they seem pretty similar, but I’m thinking of picking up a reel of black

Grey was introduced first, very sturdy string, feels clearly stiff after the first hour or two of hard hitting when its elasticity is gone, but lasts forever, total control string. Can easily give you injuries

As a response to that, black was introduced like a year or two later, clearly a softer-than-grey, more elastic, power control string, also thinner, although both are 1.25. But grey feels like 1.26 under the fingers and black feels like 1.24, it's easy to notice

Blue was introduced like a year after black, haven't tried, but it uses that new bright blue pigment, and have read it is slightly softer than both grey and black. Don't know if it's slightly mushy or not, would like to try but it's impossible to find, unavailable

There must be a reason most of their pros are using grey or black strike.. seems mostly black of their prominent sponsored pros.

With an avg static stiffness of 53.2 lbs/inch and dynamic stiffness of 230 lbs/inch I have not found the grey YPTS in 130 to be stiff. For comparison purposes Head Hawk 130 (white) has an AvgSS of 61.6 lbs/inch and DS of 235 lbs/inch and Head Lynx Tour Grey 130 has an AvgSS of 64.4 lbs/inch and 220 lbs/inch. While not soft, I would not consider either of those strings super stiff either.

It works best in softer frames that has longer dwell time, since the strings doesn’t bite/hold the balls on the strings for long. It shoots out the ball faster than the shaped polys you are coming from. It’s also more forgiving and longer lasting, even after tension drop it plays just fine.

it’s one of my favorite strings in some racquets and it almost never work in stiffer frames for me since it shoots out the ball too faster and I don’t feel like I have control of the ball

I can imagine this.

Just tried Rev and Strike at 52 pounds in pure aero vs/98 side by side and the rev felt like it had very limited ball pocketing and neither grabbed the ball so i felt totally out of control. Loved the Strike though.

everytime I used strike (grey) I also found it had limited pocketing and ball bite tho. Never had a set up that I like that string it I’m not sure why. It feels stiffer for me than Rev but also more powerful when swinging full speed (also due to lower dwell time )

Hmm I tried strike a couple of years ago and saw some post of myself on this forum which I still agree with myself (haha): that strike feels good and has nice pocketing. Also using the grey one.
