Popyrn was a real danger

Vamos Rafa. After checking out Popryn that was a hard 1st round. He has beat Sinner this year and given real problems to Medvedev and Tsitsipas this year.
Rafa i thought looked sluggish but seems like Popyrn was hitting biggest ball of the tournament so far.
Popryn could be a big star. Also won Junior RG as well.
Rafa fans, today is really encouraging now.

Nadal was struggling so hard, he barely managed to win 6-3 6-2 7-3 in a tiebreak. Popyrin really pushed Nadal, almost got a break off of Nadal once or twice.

"Was struggling so hard", "he barely managed to win in 3".

You must be delusional. If "struggling so hard" is defeating your opponent in straight sets, then what is winning in 5 sets like your man Sinner did? Following your logic, Sinner "ultra-struggled in the hardest possible way and barely came back from being completely lost".

Sorry, but winning a match in 3 is not "struggling so hard". You are just having wishful thinking to imagine Nadal is not going to win RG.

Mary Poppins will probably be Rafa’s toughest opponent until the semis. LOL
Apart from unoriginal, you are being unobjective. Another user already called him Mary Poppins and you are just copying him.

Popyrin (that's his real surname) is a RG junior champion and subsequently a relatively tough opponent for a first round. You can't pretend Nadal to face Tsitsipas or Djokovic in the first round. First rounds are always for lesser players.

I agree. Popyrin was playing at a very high level and would have beaten Djokovic who instead got Sandrgen who couldn't put a ball in the court. Today was a great win by Nadal, he beat one of the most difficult 1st round opponents. Did I mention that Popyrin would have beaten Djokovic today? Maybe I did. But anyways great thread!

sorry pal, but you are totally mistaken
so let me help you get it all correct:
1. Nadal had a berry, berry taf opponent. Barely survived R1
2. Sinner, voluntarily went for a cakewalk extended warm-up session, you know, just to get used to the court & weather conditions in Paris

Nadal's French Open wins have become practically meaningless. It's like an extremely fat man having another sandwich. Just give him the trophy already.

Yeah i was worried about match for days as it had Soderling written all over it.
At 6 ft 5 Rafa top spin was not bothering him but the ball was rearing up.
Sinner the only other major test left.

It's borderline hilarious at this point. Nadal has a cakewalk to the semis and will defeat Novak in 3 (possibly four) sets. Whoever is in the final will be destroyed.
To be honest though as a federer fan you are saying that as a sort of jinx on Rafa to soften the blow if he does win. Its like Strong rule does the other way round. It is human nature so i am not criticising.
At 35 nothing is certain as Nadal is not the clay beast he was many years ago. Aura wins him many matches now.
That said i agree Djokovic is unlikely to be a threat as he may have been in the final. Rafa will not be as nervous before the final. The court is definitely bouncing high when sunny. Popyrn is 6 ft 5 yet was hitting BHs chest hig 2 feet behind baseline.
Djokovic could not beat A poor Nadal in Rome in damp overcast conditions where ball kept low so i do think if Rafa makes semi final he has all but won the event.
Sinner is the major hurdle for me. Karatsev people keep going on about and im unclear about his threat as not seen much of him.
I have said since last RG that Sinner will be Nadals main threat at this RG.
Federer v Cilic will be interestimg. If Federer beats him easily the narrative of the tournament will change in the sense the media will get excited that Federer is at least going to be competitive.

A few other posters are doing the same thing. But it's not just to soften the blow, imo it is a roundabout way to diminish the titanic size of the accomplishment by making it sound pre-determined and non-competitive.

Yes but also same posters will be jubilant if Rafa does not win and claim Nadal failed and his career is a disaster blah blah blah.
The hatred to Nadal is astonishing. By media, people on here and the french just loathe him. I hope he wins to send them all into depression tbh.

Popryn was handpicked btw. He was most dangerous 1st round opponent Nadal could get. Thats why media were so down beat. Yet again Rafa has stuck it up them. Love it
Your persecution complex is unhealthy. Just enjoy your guy's matches without agonizing over everything surrounding them.

apparently the StrongRule syndrome is highly dangerous and can spread without direct contact, simply by reading posts in an online forum

It makes me successful. Shutting people up and making them miserable by winning is massively motivating. Adoration i imagine would be tiresome and lead to a lack of motivation?
