The National Grass Father-Son tourney started today. Naturally, given the fact that every single tournament I've played in has received rain, our warm-ups yesterday were rained out slightly before we arrived. As it turns out, the torrential downpour from yesterday afternoon forced us to play on the clay (rather than grass) courts today, despite lovely weather. We won. Tomorrow, it's supposed to be reasonable out! Guess what is scheduled for tonight though... flooding. I ****ing hate the weather. Really hoping to get some grass court tennis in, so hopefully it passes by!

Pittsburgh. Bless your heart for asking. I have been getting out and practicing. I've also been very, very busy. Since last update:

3 singles wins for USTA team (we are in the playoffs, baby!)
1-1 in singles in local tournament (college players should find somewhere else to play ...)
2 wins in my doubles league (including the take-down of the last undefeated team in our division)
2 losses in my city women's league (but hopeful improvements seen with my partner)
3 wins in local tournament in mixed doubles. The final is today, if it doesn't rain! (My partner and I beat a former D-1 college player in the semis!)

So, let's do the math: That leaves me at 20-6.

Where are you located?

On tough match, one excellent match today.

First up, we got to go out on the grass! Was very excited that the weather actually held out. Ended up playing a non-seeded team. Didn't expect much until we started warming up... Son (this is father son) seemed a bit... strong. He ended up hitting something like 90% >115 first serves. Absolutely massive. His father was a solid 5.0 or 5.5 as well, although it was deceptive (until I saw him hold his own the next round when the #2 seeded team tried to pick on him... and lost). Turns out the kid plays one of the top singles spots at N.C. state. After hearing this and seeing them in an amazing match over the second seeds, I was left slightly less disappointed with what seemed a reasonably close score. Won our second match against a solid team, after fully acclimating to the grass. I forgot how much I love this stuff. Playing a team that took a former top 40 (in the world) player and his son (who will surely be playing for a D1 school within a few years) to two long tie-breakers. They beat us in a tight match indoors this spring, want to get some revenge tomorrow!

13-7 overall.

Our last day had some great tennis, but was a bit dissapointing. Grass was too drenched from the night before, so we played on somewhat soggy clay. Our opponents took the first set relatively quickly, 6-2. We buckled down and faught hard after an early break to take the second set 6-4. Seeing as this was a consolation match, we played a 10 point tiebreak for the third set, and lost it very quickly. Glad we didn't go down in straight sets, but losing a close match against similarly skilled opponents twice in a year was disheartening. At least they are a very nice team, both in play (both officially 5.0, one had success on a 5.5 team) and in demeanor. Watched the team who ousted us from the main draw breeze through their semi-final match, and watched the start of the final (which they ended up winning). Had some quality tennis this week, but wish we could have gotten more matches in on the green stuff.

All in all a good year so far..I have really stepped up my level of comp....Going from 3.5- to 3.5 to 4.0- in Ultimate....Stepping up to 4.0 in USTA(even though I'm still rated 3.5). playing T2 at 4.0 and Alta is what it is.

My goals for the year are to win over 65% while continuing to play against better comp. My improvement has been immense just by player better players. If I play another 34 matches, which should be a cinch, I would have to win 29 of those 34 to reach my goal. thats 1 loss per month...I think I can do that.

I just got back from playing two senior tournaments in Europe on red clay...well mostly on red clay. I won the Swiss Senior Championships in Klosters in the fifty and over singles category, played a Brittish, Spanish and Dutch player and played a good final, 3/0, improving to 36-9 on the year, but lost our first round of doubles (combined 35-50 and over), so 36-10; then played the German nationals and beat a German and Austrian to reach the final. The semis were played indoors on carpet due to rain, quite a switch from slow red clay, but I managed to win that one. The final was great, I played a former top 10 player, whom I'd last played about 10 years ago losing 62 61...this time we had a great match but I lost again, 76 75...next time. No doubles there, doubels isn't big in senior tournaments in Europe, no prize money or ranking points. 39-10 for the year. Next up is the national 45 and over hard courts in California. I'm preparing for that one by watching the US Open in NY for a week. Tennis on red clay is so much fun!

USTA 3.5 Doubles Tournament = 1-1 (first place)
Club 3.5 Doubles Tournament = 1-1 (second place)

My partner and won a 3.5 Doubles Championship this weekend, although there were only 3 teams. We had to beat a pretty tough team though, we were down 2-5 and 0-3 in the first and second sets, and won 7-5, 6-3.

We took the 2nd set of the second match at in a tiebreaker (8-6) to clinch it. (we won via the set record because there was a 3 way tie)

Including all of those matches Im 12-11 for the year. I may play a couple more tournaments later in the year, but Im done with leagues for the year. Usually this time of the year I go back to just playing drills and playing in indoor challenge ladder matches. (and lots of relaxing and watching football)

Just won my 3rd tournament this year.

So far am

18-1.

Am probably going to get bumped up again to 4.0 after being bumped down to 3.5. USTA computer works in mysterious ways.

I played the national 45 hard courts...not my age division but within driving distance. Singles went 5-2 (including a default in the 5/6 playoff), finished 5th; in doubles went 2/2 (beat the #2 seeds/defending champions, but then my partner injured her leg and we had to default the bronze ball playoff...). So 43/14 for the year...next up the worlds.

I'm not living in the US... and please note that I started playing in January 2008... Anyway, I self rated myself at 3.0 and started playing from time to time with a guy who's rated 3.5. He lived and played in the US for a while, so he's rating is more accurate. Here go the results now: i lost the 1st match 2-6 2-6, the 2nd 1-6 3-6, the 3rd 4-6 4-6 and the fourth 6-4 1-6 6-7. In this last match I had a 5-0 lead in the third set, so I guess I shouldn't have lost it - but I see the full half and believe that this experience taught me a lot about the mental game. So this season's record is a flawless 0-4 but I definitely improved and I look forward to the fifth confrontation. :)

Just got back out to USTA play after a few months off and won a match we should have lost on paper. Boy does that feel good! 7.5 combo against a true 7.5 combo while we were a 7.0 combo. (Though I'm pretty sure my partner carried me, I couldn't even remember the score...)

Geez, has it been a while. OK:
USTA regional playoffs: 1-3 (ughh)
Doubles league: 1-0 (highlight was full-grown man tapping out to a couple of women)
Tournament play -- there were two:
Singles: 4-2 (one semifinal loss and one loss in the final -- both to people who just keep beating me)
Doubles: 3-1 (another semifinal loss and another loss in the final)
Mixed: 0-1 (hubby and I imploded -- that was fun ...)
Now:
33-16.
Only thing left this year is fall mixed league. Took home some runner-up hardware, which didn't make me feel much better. Probably my first year ever with a winning record. I'm happy, but I can do much better. Next year, the loss column stays in single digits, dammit!

Lost my singles this week, but won another mixed tourney with my husband, and finished out my doubles league season with a win. Now:
24-9.

I just got back from playing in Turkey...senior world team championships (USA won our division, women's 50s, over Australia) and the world Championships. I went 4-1 in doubles in the team event and 3-1 in singles and 1/1 in doubles in the individual world championships...2 bronze medals, lost to the winners in the 50 singles and 40 doubles. Now I have to dust off the red clay and play a team event on hard courts in about a week in Texas. 50-16 now for the year. Only two more tournaments this year. Is everyone else done for the year?
