Pray for Michael Schumacher!

ESPN reporting the great driver is in critical condition with a brain injury after a horrible skiing accident. What a tragedy if we lose him! Please have his well-being in your thoughts and prayers!

Strange. Just yesterday I read that his injuries were not life threatening and I was making fun of the goofy picture of him skiing while wearing a silly looking alpine/race car driver jacket.

Story said he was wearing a helmet. Still, skiing can get dangerous quickly - especially off-piste.

Schumacher, who has a chalet nearby, has a reputation as an accomplished skier, and resort officials said he was wearing a helmet when he fell. His medical team told the news conference that the severity of his impact with the rock, causing the lesions on the right side of his brain, was such that he would have died had he not been wearing a helmet.

“Without a helmet, he wouldn’t be here now,” Dr. Payen said.

The man is an experienced skier and thrill seeker. He took preventative measures just in case. I'm glad they attended to the issue as soon as possible. Liam Neeson's wife could have survived if they had took care of that injury ASAP.

???
The guy arrived to the hospital in coma, had the brain surgery to stop the bleeding and is now fighting for his life. Doctors will not comment till Tuesday when they will know if he has any chance for survival or not.

I don't think his experience helped here much...

Yes, I read and saw it.

1. Many people forget to wear a helmet while doing physical activity (when it is important such as riding a bike and others)

2. What I meant was that just because you're experienced in something, doesn't mean that you won't get injured performing in it.

yep, luckily he did have a helmet...
Lets hope for the best!

He was wearing a full face helmet plus a back and chest protector..Helmet was

found not cracked but in pieces..

Without it he would have died on the spot.

Lets hope he pulls through!
Heard he was improving a little bit.

Outside of that , on the topic of Formula One,
was he as great as some say?
Was his car the same or worse than the rest of the guys cars?

In my book definitely one of the greats, I put him right behind Ayrton Senna.

Schumacher won 7 world titles ( 5 with Ferrari, 2 with Bennetton ) and has 91 victories in Formula 1 GP

under his belt.

The ferrari might have been the top F1 car one year but in the long run it's the pilot and his abilities to

work with his team to set up / race a near perfect car on each track that makes the difference.

Ok,which year may it have been the top car?

And what other cars were the better ones the other 7 years?

the ferreri was very good but in some years the williams and later the mercedez cars were a little faster. in some years it probably was the best car though (the mercedez and williams often had a stronger engine but the ferreri might have had a better driveability in the turns).

without a top car you are not winning in the F1.

I must admit I didn't like him at all when he was a driver. He was unscrupulous and he made me stop watching F1 back in his days.

This being said, this is a terrible thing that happened to him that goes way beyond being a fan of someone and I wish him a full and quick recovery.

Must have been a pretty bad fall.
Schumi was always a daredevil.

Also reminds you how fragile life is and how unexpectedly short it can be.
People make a big fuss, big plans and get crazy and miss it point blank.

I must admit that this story reminds me of those fat shows where people say they want to lose weight because they want to see their children grow old, get married and have children.

OTM
THIS reminds you that life is fragile?? No, life is quite resilient so long as you don't do things like slide down icy mountains at high speed or drive at 200 mph.

....or get hit on your commute to work, or slip in the bathtub, or...........

Life is there to have fun and take risks. I don't wear a helmet. Probably should, just enjoy it whilst you have it! Skiing in the same valley where Micheal was at the moment. He enjoyed life!

Apparently he wasn't going very fast. Just hit a bad patch/rock and hit his head a rock. Bad luck.

Accidents happen doing all sorts of mundate things. Doesn't necessarily mean he was being reckless.

What is this all about?

Off piste means a lot of things and how is snowboarding worse?

"Off piste" doesn't mean a lot of things. It is the area on the mountain which is off of the groomed and/or marked ski trails. It is also known as back country skiing. Conditions are variable. Thus, it is inherently more dangerous than on trail skiing given similar degrees of slope.

Very poor analysis of the situation. Off piste skiing is not a mundane activity. Unless Schumacher was skiing from a trail to his chalet over gentle slope, or something similarly "mundane", he put himself in a situation of elevated risk. Not that the resulting injury should be expected, but the possibility of such an injury is greatly increased. In such situations, one can go from having great fun to seriously injured/dead in the blink of an eye.

This is why I play dodge on the freeway, because more people are injured in bathtub falls. You really can't argue with this; it is just statistics.

I'd guess that professional race car drivers are considerably more risk-seeking than the average human.

Best wishes for Schumacher.

Life is a series of events involving the yin yang of risk/reward. For many in Schumacher's shoes, that first part of the equation becomes addictive. In his case, he reaped many rewards for his skillful daring. This time, he wasn't so lucky.

Whether he should have been doing what led to this trauma is irrelevant to me...it's his life to live as he chooses. I just hope he can regain all cognitive and motor skills to live a happy, productive remainder of his days on our planet. That's why he will be in my prayers until his complete recovery is accomplished.

I've seen off piste used for all skiing off of marked trails. Granted, "Means" may have been the wrong word choice, but my intent was to say that off piste encompasses a huge range of conditions, both for snow pack and skier ability needed. None of us know where he was skiing or what the conditions were. He may have been on 60deg ice accessed by a 2 stage repel or something just off a groomer that sees a ton of skier traffic and is no more difficult than a marked black slope. Seeing that he was with his 14yr old son, I'm guessing it was closer to the later.

Edit: Where witnesses say he fell. Under the gondi, and doesn't look much more difficult than the bumps next to it.

He was only a Few Meters away from the normal Piste. He helped a Girl Which was fallen to Stand up. After that he startend again Skiing with Slow Speed then the accident Happyend. Here is the picture from the rock.

Pretty common.

The above talk about "dangerous off piste skiing" is fine, but in reality, most skiing accidents happen:

1) At the end of the day when you get tired and therefore lazy. Bad things can happen.

2) When you relax and stop focusing on what you are doing (like in easy green groomed runs). I've caught edges and crossed skis more times than I can count AFTER executing a difficult run and gone down like a ton of bricks. If there had been a rock under my head when this had happened........

If there was a rock under your head, then you probably weren't on a green run. Or a blue run. But yes, bad things can happen anywhere on the mountain. I don't have the numbers, but I'm guessing most accidents happen where the most skiers are. There are probably more deaths per year on a typical U.S. highway than on a Bolivian mountain road, but that doesn't make the mountain road less dangerous.

Looking at the pictures of where the accident supposedly occurred, I see plenty of smooth, groomed looking terrain all around. I would have avoided that area knowing first, the risk for serious injury exponentially increases and second, that I'm a lousy skier. Everyone makes, or should make, a decision on what terrain they are going to take on based on their skiing ability and their off mountain responsibilities. Keeps me conservative on the slopes but for others the formula works out differently.

I was skiing off piste today. Hit rock that was not visible. Skis stuck under rock, whilst I did my best impersonation of being a bird. Took me and my friends ten minutes to stop laughing. Then just as long to climb back up and retrieve my skis.

Early season conditions. There are rocks everywhere.

I forgot, you're still serving time for that public indecency conviction. Once you're on the outside, you'll find the skiing much less treacherous. 'Till then, good luck and don't drop the slope.

Everyone seemed fine when it was just the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders and me having a little fun. I think someone called the cops because you wouldn't stop screaming "look at the size of it".
