Predicting the Nationals winners 18 & over 4.5 men and women - Men's All TT Team has a shot!

They solved the score problem at our sectionals by starting each set at 2-2, which I think is functionally about the same thing.

If I didn't get bumped because I bageled some jabroni and they put the score in as 2&2 I'd be pissed.

Except, I think when they start at 2-2, there is still supposed to be a translation when they enter the score. Now, is it actually done or not? Dunno.

Can we get the exact rules for the 4 game sets? Ad or no ad? Tiebreaker at 3-3?

J
I've been told by several folks no TB at 3-3, it is just first to 4. I've heard differing reports on whether playing out the deuces or no-ad, I'm guessing no-ad though. So if you serve first and everyone holds, you win the first set 4-3. Of course, you would then lose the second set 4-3 so it evens out.

And 3rd set MTBs are just 12 pointers (first to 7), I believe win by two.

Looks like play may be done for the day, only a brief gap in the forecast later this evening, and then solid rain forecast all day tomorrow. There are 7 women's matches and 3 men's matches scheduled for today still not complete, let alone getting ahead for tomorrow.

I hear there are some indoor courts that may be used. I have no idea how many or how much it is going to help.

Hypothetical question, at this point, what is your preferred way to try to get the matches in assuming they have some number of indoor courts but they are limited.

A) Continue the same format and hope you get enough in
B) Go to an even shorter format (just play a 10 point tie-break?)
C) Change to 3 courts, 1 singles and 2 doubles so a team match uses fewer courts and they can be turned over more quickly

They are using indoor courts at TCU right now and supposedly have some available tomorrow at scattered locations around the area. You'd think if they can spend $60M on the national campus, they can spend a couple thousand on indoor courts to ensure a national championship can run smoothly.

Idiots!

considering the main site was 15 minutes from civilization in arlington im assuming the indoor courts are in mexico.
There are at least 500 shops and restaurants within 5 minutes of ATC, including a mall and a high end outdoor mall. Google is your friend. To be fair, though, if you come at it from the north or east, you will think it's just in the middle of a bunch of older subdivisions. Civilization is south and west of it.

TCU is about five miles southwest of downtown Fort Worth but probably close to 30 minutes from ATC. The indoor courts there are top notch, though.

yesterday’s matches are officially complete. Indoor courts secured this evening, so it’s a rainy day of nothing in particular for everyone. The collective mindset of this gathering of players has shifted, I think.

So, no play all day, no indoor courts available? How are they going to get a day's worth of matches in on limited indoor courts in one evening?

Depends on when they start. The HOPE is to get 2 matches for everyone, with the fast 4 format. If it starts at 3, maybe done by 9 or 10? Who knows what will happen? All anyone really knows is that it is raining hard all day.

I had the opposite experience at 4.5 plus .....

I am a low 4.5 and not a singles guy, but we did not have a guy on our roster that could beat the other teams 5.0 (nearly 5,5) singles guy ... so I was elected to be the lamb to the slaughter. I managed to win one game, but the score was recorded as 3 and 2 ..... when you look on tennis record those gift 4 games made my match rating well into the 5.0 range. I bet neither one of us mind.

I don't understand why, if they shorten to 4-game sets, they wouldn't also say 'win by 2'. So essentially, if everyone holds serve, a set comes down to a spin of the racquet. Terrible way to run a tournament, Nationals or otherwise. In my experience, when we've had to do this, we start the score at 2-all and go from there...but we had to still win by 2. It helped our brains understand it a better to do it that way.

My 40+ team is headed there next weekend, and we are panicking over the weather. It is way too much money to pay to get down there, stay down there, and then have this happen. USTA should not be having Nationals in locations that do not have appropriate indoor backup.

One can rationalize it that if you hold serve, the spin of the racquet decides the first set for player A and the second set for player B, so it evens out.

Forecast right now is for showers Friday and Saturday morning :( . That is pretty benign compared to what they are ensuring this weekend though. But a long ways off though, could change in either direction.

In a rare defense of the USTA, this weather isn't normal. DFW is getting twice as much rain this weekend as the normal average for all of October. This time of year is typically great tennis weather.

That's true...but still, would making it 'win by 2' that much longer?

We play at 0730 both mornings...but I like that schedule. Yes, we are hoping that it will change for the better. I saw some pretty depressing pictures posted from friends this weekend.

@schmke maybe a new analysis?
Based on? Just the completion of day 1?

FWIW, forecast now appears to perhaps have rain end by 5pm, perhaps play can begin outdoors and they can catch up using both the indoor courts they've secured (don't know how many thought) and the outdoor courts.

And I just heard, the plan is now to try and get everything in using an even shorter scoring format. I don't know if this assumes just the indoor courts they've secured or the use of any outdoor courts this evening when perhaps the weather clears.

Get ready, this is a doozy.

Ready yet?

Each match will be a single set to 4 games, no-ad, win by 2, if you get to 4-4 play a tie-break to 7 win by 2.

Perhaps the best that could be done given the situation, but what do you think?

More facetious than serious, but based on first set results?
It’s stopped raining, but it’s wet wet wet. We’ll see what’s possible.

True, and Phoenix is even getting some rain this weekend (not as much as DFW though) so it wouldn't have been perfect there (but Palm Springs has been warm/dry). But this forecast had to be known for several days before the event started and it would have been prudent to start securing indoor courts before Friday afternoon when it started to rain.

It is 7pm in Arlington, matches were supposed to start at 6pm, still no scores recorded. Perhaps just delayed on getting them entered, but between the men and women there are 34 team matches to play and with 5 courts that is 170 individual courts which at even a conservative 30 minutes per match is 85 court hours needed to get stuff in tonight. Can it be done?

One score entered!

And an odd side-effect of this shortened format is that the entered score for a match is just 1 of 5 different possible scores. It appears that we have:

4-0 - 6-0,6-0
4-1 - 6-1,6-2
4-2 - 6-3,6-3
5-3 - 6-4,6-4 7-6,6-4 (update, just saw this score so guessing it came from a 5-3)
5-4 - 7-6,7-6

Now, not sure what else you'd do, but obviously categorizing a score into just one of these is very much a step function and doesn't allow for differentiating much. Should it come to the games lost tie-breaker, the difference between 4-0 and 4-1 is 3 games as is the difference between 4-1 and 4-2.

Just another reason the games lost tie-breaker is flawed and comes into play way too soon.

Four teams still undefeated, but just one of those is 3-0 as just 3 of today's scores have been entered for the men so far. Feels like a big tie at 3-1 is likely.

It’s 12:30 am, and nothing is final yet. 3 out of 4 spots are pretty sure on both the men’s and women’s side, but there’s a lot in play yet to fill the final spots.

Also, I don’t really know anyone on the TT 4.5 men’s team, but I think we’d be the best dressed and best looking team.
