Predominant shot of each decade

I was thinking about the shot that better describes a decade or even an era.

There are many grgeat shots in any decade, and some of the best particular shots may have been hit out of the predominant decade.

What I mean is, which was the best shot of most of the players of a decade, or which is a recognizable shot that was hit by the majority of, say, the top 10 players of any era. Here is my list

1960.The volley

All greats of the 60´s had a good to great volley: Hoad,Pancho,Laver,Roche,Emerson,Fraser,Stolle,Rosewall... most of the best volleys were played then, even if other greats like Mac,Edberg,Cash,Sampras or Rafter belong to another decade.

1970: the BH

Connors,Vilas,Orantes,Ashe, even Laver and Rosewall had the BH as their trade mark shot.

Great FH would be Nastase´s,Borg´s and Newcombe´s but, the trade mark shot of most of the top 10 players of that decade would be the BH

1980: the FH

Lendl,Becker,Borg,Gomez,Clerc,Mecir,Kriek all were known for their great FH.Mac´s FH was a more dominat shot than his BH, although Mac´s most famous shot was his volley (as posted before).we also had young Agassi, young Courier and also Arias and Krickstein with booming FH.

1990: clearly the serve.

There have been players, like Pancho,Newcombe,Tanner,Mac or Becker , and of course, Federer,Roddick,Karlovic and so on that will be ranked among the best servers all time.

However, in no other decade, Serve was the rpedominant shot:

Sampras,Becker,Stich,Krajicek,Kafelnikov,Ivanisevic,Forget were reputed by their serve and others like Rafter or Edberg, had a very good serve.

2000´s: the combination of Fh and BH as proven by Federer,Hewitt,Safin,Nadal,Djokovic,Murray,Berdych,Soderling or Del Potro.

¿ Any thoughts ?

LoL at the tweeners. Nice one!

I personally feel that it is the Passing Shot.

The quality of passing shots have improved to such a degree that players can no longer come in on ANY hard-struck FH/BH. This has forced many players to develop better all round games.

Also, because, I agree with the 1990s being serve-dominated, it makes sense that the majority of up and coming players would have had to develop passing shots against players who are coming in behind a big serve and/or big approach shot.

Just my thoughts.

I don't see how it can be the passing shot, because that actually requires someone coming to net.

People don't come to net.

I think it has to be the inside out forehand.

How many people do you see these days running themselves way out of position to hit their beloved inside out topspin forehand, many times short in the service box. This could be popularized because technology now allows for players to have the ability to hit improbable winners from anywhere on the court, open stance, off balance. I guess, this could be apart of the passing shot, but I just think thats due to conditions.
Federer, Nadal, Spaniards in General, Safin, Gonzalez, Andreev, Querrey, and the rest of the world, including myself all love inside out forehands.

The heavy spin forehand. This includes passing shots, inside out forehands, and angles like nadal and Federer can create. We're seeing more and more players use spin to get ridiculous angles by being able to bring the ball up and down very quickly.. spin is being used like never before, and especially off the forehand side.

I agree with the inside-out forehand. Hit well, it is so hard to defend against especially as players are great with the crosscourt-ish one (inside-in) from that position. This decade really (especially towards the end) emphasized overall excellence i.e. strong groundies, serve, defense and movement.

2020 -- 2029: The Ladder Shot. Topspin has reached the 11,000 rpm level, so that players need to play back at the wall and grab on to the upper railing of the stands to try to achieve sufficient elevation to reach it.

2030 -- 2039: The Melter. A shot popular on hardcourts, where global warming has led to court surface temperatures of 210 degrees F. Players (wearing asbestos lined socks) hit low slice away from their opponent attempting to achieve maximum contact time of ball-on-court, to induce the ball to melt before their opponent can reach it.

Top spin fh with an emphasis on inside out.Possibly 2000´s trademark.

... and, yes, may be Diablo will be right about 2020-2029
