Premium vs cheap synthetics guts.

As I've been trending back to mids and older school feeling rackets, I've found that the feel of synthetic gut in these sticks outshine most anything in terms of feel and decent playability. I have a Black Ace 93 mid coming in as well as an overwhelming urge to purchase YT IG Prestige Mid. I demoed the Prestige with a set of FXP 16@59 (according to TW Customer service, Thanks TW!) and it was magical in terms of control and feel. The spin wasn't quite there, but a dense, control oriented stick just really gets me in the groove to flatten out anyways. The pop was as expected from a synthetic gut; just terrific. This got me thinking about premium priced synthetics.

Lets leave out durability for a second, but keep a eye on tension maintenance.

  • Have you guys noticed any major differences between premium and cheap synthetics?
  • What style and level do you play? Favorite shots, strategies, and preferences?
  • What type of gear do you enjoy using and why?
  • Which premium and cheap synthetics have you tried and what did you feel about each of them in your particular racket?

Thanks in advance.

I'm more of a poly person... But some feel like a board while others are nice and crisp.

I've tried Spiral Flex 1.30 and PSGD 1.25 in full beds and they feel like the string bed sags on contact. I really can't expain it better than that. On the other hand, S-gut 1.30 from Dunlop feels very crisp and non-saggy. S-gut has nice, crisp response and while stringing it was very elastic. It seems to give good spin too. As it breaks in, I may decide to go with it for this LM OS. I may go with it for my other racquets too, depending on the longevity of the hybrids that I have on those.

Just played with wislon extreme in my new BA. Kinda muted, but the power level is just right for my game. A bad ping, but a dampener almost cured it.

Premium guts played better for me than the cheap ones. The cheap ones are typically very-low powered, feel quite dead, unresponsive, and go loose very fast.

The only exception I found so far is Forten Sweet. It is cheap, but I like the way it plays: it is very soft and stretchy and I like that feeling.

The premius ones which I liked were Gosen Nano Blend, Gamma TNT variants, Babolat N.Vy.
