Prince Phantom 93P- Best string set up

What can I say? I’ve always preferred lower tensions. I strung my ps85s in the low 40s. I’m certainly not the Flash with my swing speed but it’s not hard to control once you get used to it.

I totally get that. That's interesting you are able to control such low tensions. It's all about what works for your game

There are some men’s doubles players that go really low tension with gut/poly. I think Daniel Nestor went with gut in the 30’s. None of those guys swing slow. Spin and control largely come from technique with a little augmentation from strings. So anyone likely can learn to control anything given time.

In the 93p I want feel and pop as I mostly play doubles and my game is all about chipping returns and driving to the net for volleys and overheads. So when I had the tensions high it was less than optimal. Now the way I’ve got it with gut/cream is near perfect for power, control and touch.

Sadly finding Cream is a pain sometimes so I’m hoping I can tolerate a string like Proline II which is more commonly available.

I’m going to give GhostWire a try in this frame and I’ll let you know how it is. Sadly it’s going to rain here for the next week so it may be a while.

Nestor is using a hybrid though, and also I think doubles players can string much lower because they don't hit as many balls (singles you would hit more balls therefore tension would drop quicker) so that makes sense. That is more an exception than the rule with natural gut. Most people string natural gut fairly tight, and i have experimented with full beds of natural gut in different rackets since 2017.

I could play with low tensions if i had the means to re-string after every match. Low tension is great for the first 4 hours then it slowly starts to trampoline.

If i was using gut/poly I'd probably string it at 53/50 if i was using something stiff like 4G then probably 50/47.

Not using a phantom, but Luxilon NG has reduced, according to racquet tune, from 60 to 35 lbs in about three weeks of hitting. The trampoline effect seems temperature/humidity dependent, but I can work around it. I don't think the 1.30 is going to break at this low tension playing doubles, so I'll have to cut it out eventually.

Something seems off there. That's almost 50% tension loss...I normally get about 20% tension loss with NG over 6 weeks

I wish I knew. I did not check it straight from the stringer with racquet tune, but I am using the correct string data as far as I can tell. It feels loose physically, so I know that it's lost tension. What's curious is that I have multi (frayed all to hell) in the same frame, that's even older, and it only shows 3lbs of tension loss according to racquet tune.

That’s sort of where I started and found i could go a bit lower. Like all things I’m sure you’ll get it dialed in but it’s definitely not a DR 98 in playing characteristics so you have to assume some adjustments in your usual string set up. I’m using a radically different set up than what I liked in my old Pure Drives.

Just got done hitting for a couple hours with the GhostWire 17g(1.22), although I have never hit with cream this string may be the softest poly I have ever used. So so plush, amazing ball pocketing, spin is whatever because of the 18x20 pattern, control is very very good. Any of you cream lovers give this string a try! My search for a round poly is over. Can't wait to start hybrid-ing it!

Played a couple sets with Gosen sheep micro syn gut 17g at 50lbs. Played better than I thought it would. Sounds goofy hitting the ball though so I can’t say it was the best experience. But it performed quite nicely for a 4 dollar string.

Haven’t played a full bed of OGSM 17 but I’ve used it in a hybrid many times and it’s great for that. Either in mains with round slick poly or crosses with pretty much anything.

Yeah I was suitably impressed. I’d heard it was a great budget string so I thought I’d give it a whirl for fun until I can get my racket strung with my usual gut/poly.

Well I got to try out the OGSM 93P directly with my gut/Cream 93P and while the OGSM held up well, it's not quite as good for touch, spin and power as gut/poly. Admittedly for the price difference it was damn close lol. Good inexpensive string.

Of course I've got some ghostwire coming so another playlets on the way.

Good to know! What color OGSM are you using? I have the white. Also what do you plan on doing with the GhostWire? FB or Hybrid?

Natural OGSM. I'll be hybridizing the Ghostwire 18g with Klip Legend gut 17g. Probably go 50 lb gut mains / 44 lb ghost crosses

Well just finished a few sets of doubles with Legend 17g /Proline II 18g at 50/44. Really nice feel. Bit more crisp than Cream but not nearly as harsh as Max Power. Really good balance of comfort and control. We'll see how tension maintenance and durability goes but this combo is another winner for the arm so far.

I have a few older Prince NXG mids, which are rather similar to the newer Phantom 93P - maybe 92" hoops, 18x20 pattern, heavy, and gummy-bear soft. I still workout with those frames here and there and I've always had great results with a 17 ga. syn. gut tensioned somewhere in the range of maybe 53-57 lbs. (I go lower when playing in colder weather).

Gosen OGSM, PSGD, Technifibre SG, and Kirschbaum SG, all in 17 ga. have given me decent feel and performance, but also good durability in that dense layout. Too dense for a 16 ga. string in my humble opinion.

Just got my 19g ghostwire in the mail, i look forward to trying it out with lux gut when my current setup breaks!

Got some 18g coming myself. Wasn't sure about 19g so I'll be interested in your opinions. Right now I have one 93P with gut/Proline and one with Gut/Cream. Will work through those setups and compare then try out the ghostwire next stringing.

My first string job with my new 93p ended up being Hyper G 18 at 40lbs. I know some folks don’t like the feel of Hyper G generally...but if you’re not one of them, def give Hyper G a try in this frame. For me it’s a perfect fit.

Having said that, i have a bunch of demo sets on the way from Tier 1 to try and a set of RS Lyon 1.20 as well. Will see if the grass is greener...

Sorry but the arms a little sensitive so I can't go full poly. Otherwise I'd love to try a full bed of Hyper-G. That sounds like a great setup.

Gut/poly is my kinder/gentler spin/feel setup.

All good @Dartagnan64. Full poly isn’t for everyone, for one reason or another. I expect at some point I will be in that camp, too.

I'm currently using Luxilon Timo 18 which is also 1.10mm, and by comparison, after playing with Timo crosses the 18g max power felt a bit boardy and somewhat disconnected in combination with 16g natural gut, so I can't see myself moving away from the super thin gauge crosses, at least with 16g gut. Can't really comment on whether it makes a difference in spin, but the difference in feel is significant between 1.10 and 1.20mm. I think if I went with 17g gut it would be fine to go 1.20mm crosses.

So I just realized that the place I get my stringing done at put the NG in the crosses and Synthetic gut in the mains. I happen to order a new 93p last week with the same strings (Klip lightning hybrid) and they strung it correctly. NG Mains at about 50-51 and Synthetic Gut Crosses at about 47-48. Have hit quite a bit over the last several days because of how warm and nice the weather is.

Unfortunately I’m struggling to find depth at times and control at other times no matter if the gut is in the mains or crosses however it seems a bit worse with the NG in the mains. Either hitting a bit short or the ball is sailing, very little in between. Some of this is certainly technique or perhaps arm is getting stronger or more acclimated to the frame, but I’m curious if the warmer weather (70s versus 40s-50s) could be causing the stringbed to become a bit more erratic. Should I up the tension by 2 or 3 lbs? I really hate to abandon the string because it seems to be helping my shoulder immensely but I need some more consistency. I should also note that serves seem fine, it’s primarily ground strokes, including OBH and slices.

Appreciate any advice. Thanks

For depth, try focusing on more drive through the shot (finish across the chest). The lower launch angle (and hence less depth) of the dense string pattern is something we all needed to adjust to if we were used to open string pattern racquets before.

++ on OGSM being such a versatile string.

After my current RS Lyon 17L (45/40) I'm going to try shaped poly (Still-in-Black HTS 1.20) / OGSM 17g at 40/35 or 40/40.

A common mistake that especially happens with new gear is checking out your shot while it is still on your racquet. Picking up your head will also raise your racquet and send the ball into the net. When you try to compensate, it will seem like you have a much smaller window to keep the ball in the court.

Any difference between the colors with OGSM? I've only tried natural but was thinking of ordering some black for my wife as I think she'd like this string in her Blade 104.

No idea. I got my reel of OGSM 17 natural cheap second hand from someone else. I would go with the black sine it matches colour of Phantoms better :)

Have about 3 plus hours of the GhostWire on the 93p and yes it’s an 18x20 pattern but there is absolutely no notching of any kind and hardly any dents either. This string is great.

So after playing a bit more with the gut/Cream and gut/PLII, I've noticed a few more differences. Well, one really. The PLII 93P does get a lower launch angle than the Cream racket. I think that could be compensated for by lowering the tension a bit more down to 42lbs in my next stringing. I've also noted the Black Legend Gut is a bit gummier than the natural Legend. I think that gives a bit better ball friction but limits snapback a bit and that may also be lowering my launch angle.

Tried Tier One FireWire Boost 18 @ 40lbs. Hit with it right off the stringing machine, which turned out to be a poor choice. The string bed felt stiff and unforgiving. Can’t remember hitting worse in the last year.

24 hrs later, I had a 8.0 mixed match to play. Thought about ditching the 93p, but I decided to see how the warm up would go with it. Glad I did. The feel was so different from the day before - forgiving, spin friendly, buttery, pop when I needed it, but still controllable. Won the match easily. Jury is still out for me if I can spin the ball more with the Boost vs. Hyper G...but it’s definitely up there. The feel may well be a little better with the Boost - Hyper G can be a bit plasticky. But note to self - must let the racquet “age” for 24hrs when stringing with tier one FireWire boost.

Truth be told I wonder if I should start a few lbs lower than 40 - I was able to play with the Hyper G 18 for far more sessions than I’m used to before it felt dead.

I strung mine with Cyclone 18 black at 40, and I’m wondering the same thing. Either a softer poly, lower tension, or both.

Also want to try a gut/poly hybrid, but it’s been raining so much in LA that I think I should wait til summer for that.

Really enjoying both Gut/Cream and Gut/PLII. I think in the long run Cream is a bit more to my liking . But no complaints about performance from either.

Think @stephenclown mentioned playing fullbed RPM Blast in the 30s lbs with the 93P and swears by it now.

I’m contemplating my next move. 40 lbs was still too high. Textured poly mains at 38, smooth poly cross at 36 is what I’m thinking. Maybe even lower with a cheap string first just to find the bottom end of acceptability.

This is insane. I think my stringer will give me that look (*like he heard something wrong) if I ask my rackets to be strung in the 30’s. I honestly thought I was hesitant on going 48 thinking it might be too low.

Just wondering what was the highest/ lowest tension that some of you tried?

My shop always strings demos in the middle of recommended tension, so when I demoed it it was string with Hyper-G at 50lbs. That’s the day I learned what the term “boardy” meant. If you’re unsure, start at 45 and work your way down. That’s the low end of the range printed on the racquet.

Lots of people string Polys in the high 50’s, but I read they should never go above 52 lbs. and this racquet in particular really craves lower tensions.

I love the frame so much I'd be happy if I could get just a little more out of the frame. Honestly, it played even better after the initial loss of tension, so I think I'm going to try the mid 40's, then go even lower at 40lbs with 18G poly and see. Thanks for the recommendation.

I’m on the verge of going gut/poly hybrid, but it’s been so wet here in LA, I think I’ll fiddle around with some poly tension adjustments til the weather improves.
