Prince Phantom 97P Review / Discussion

He also complained about a small sweetspot similar to the TW review...

I think Prince responded to the request for an "easier-to-use 93P" by dropping the weight and swingweight as well as making the head bigger. The swingweight in particular is lower than most of the 100" Phantom variants, even the lighter ones. I think this is what is making it feel a bit less stable with a smaller sweet spot. Probably a bit of lead on the hoop is all that is needed for those who don't like the stock form. Or you could just do what I do and try to hit in the center. :p

Is it easy to hit flat with the 97p? How is the trajectory? Looking to buy a new stick, but if it has a high, loopy trajectory that is a no go for me.

This racquet is not designed for heavy topspin. It also doesn't favor low, flat hitting as much as the Blade or Phantom 93P 18x20 but it's definitely not loopy. I think it's a happy medium.

Anybody on here weight a 97p up around 12.5 ounces, 330-340 swing weight, 7-10 points headlight?

I usually modify my racquets to those Specs with lead at 3&9/10&2 with a leather grip.

Curious how a 97p would play modified compared to stock.

Loving my modded 97P, beautiful feel and control all over the court. Slice forehand winners are brutally effective. @langdon0555 weight helps to bring out the sweet spot and response with some additional feel. I would think that your goal weight would really help the frame and improve the response, especially at the net and on serve.

I would guess mine is now around 350 grams mid 340s swing weight with the new string and has great plow. Need to get it measured somewhere.

The big change from last time is my strings. Have put in BBO at 48/46 and just loving it. More notched after an hour than I would have thought, hope it doesn't head downhill quickly. I'm lucky my hitting partner doesn't crush the ball or it might have been an issue since I'm low on string stock.

Power level is better than last time I used it and it has this incredible feel that I have come to expect of luxilon strings. It might be among the best of any string I have used. The control and spin is just a perfect mix. Overall I feel like I have complete control over the ball in every situation. Doesn't have any weaknesses since my frame has some nice weight to it now to absorb the poly shock. It doesn't rip the felt off the ball like a brand new set of alu but it also is more consistent as Alu does lose some of that bite.

Alu has a magical mix of spin and control but also with power so it is slightly different to BBO. In the 97P I am unsure what the best mix is. BBO has slightly more control and can hit a loopy ball and flat without an issue.

I might hit up the OG Jolly2 rig or whatever it's nicknamed as. Need to grab some Alu Power and give it a whirl, imagine that it will be very good. The Alu does feel a little better and softer so taking some of that to soften up the bed should be nice.

How did everyone weight up their 97P? I had a 5g at 3&9 with a calfskin leather. Was thinking of 2-3g at 12 instead. Thoughts...?

Before I played it with stock, I used 4g at 3&9 and 1g at 12 , everything felt quite nice, but I was personally a bit too slow against higher level players, probably not enough weight in the handle anymore, so I actually went back to stock and I thought it actually played alot better - my forehand has a large loop so adding weight for me in the hoop and losing headlight balance was not ideal for my playstyle

I expected it to be unstable because of what I've been reading in this thread , but I think it's totally fine

I find it super stable like Rf97 stable with old school head like flex. Amazing really I was telling somebody the other day it’s like they took 3 of my favorite racquets and created a custom racquet for me. k90 with its thin beam and head light balance, pro tour 630 flex and shape and rf97 with super solid feel on groundies and ease of spin.

I have some personal reasons that require me to add some weight to slow down my swingspeed. I have about 7 grams under the bumper. Unsure what the swingweight would be for that. 1 strip extends 90% of the bumper, the second strip is about 7" centered at 12. I'd guess between 340 and 350.

Super smooth and sweet.

What strings are you using in it @dgoran? I ran out of strings, waiting for PTP 1.25 to arrive and might grab a reel of Alu Power with some gut. Loved PTP 1.25 in the 93P

Demoing the 97P strung with Wilson Sensation. My usual racquet is the Vcore 97 330 and I play 4.5 singles and doubles. I am loving the 97P on serves and volleys, but can't seem to get the power and depth on groundstrokes that I am used to with my VCore. I know the flexiness of the racquet has something to do with it. Any recommendations on how to get a heavier ball on groundies? Weight and/or string choices?

I'd start by dropping a couple of lbs in your regular strings set-up. Also, the SW is quite a bit lower on the 97P vs the Vcore 330, so if it were me I'd add a couple of g of lead at 12, counterbalanced by the same amount under the butt cap.

While I'm still messing around with racquets before the USTA match season starts, I think I will give the 97P one last go. I got frustrated with it last spring and put it away; I just wasn't getting the grip on the ball that I wanted. I have it strung with a gut-poly hybrid and cutting out natural gut is going to pain me greatly, but I think I need to give poly in the mid-40s a try.

I just picked up a used 97P with a gut/poly hybrid, getting nice bite on the ball. This racquet seems to suit me, so if you (@time_fly) are looking to get rid of yours, let me know.

That's a high praise!

How does it compare to Gravity Pro? That's thin beam with classic feel and has a bigger sweet spot.

I'm seeing the word flex a lot in this thread which piques my interest. Does the 97P flex at the throat? That's where I like to feel the frame bend.

Yes. It's soft. Super muted too, like ninja quiet.

How does stability compare to the UP 16x19? More muted than the UP? I feel like the UP transmits just enough feel but would like a fraction more softness if I'm being very picky. Gonna hit the Touch PP tomorrow for the first time indoors against the UP 16x19. Almost settled on the UP 16x19 after a long season of holicing, but this 97P has been a blip on my radar for awhile, and it won't leave.

UP16 is more stable, less twisting. 97P is more muted. Biggest noticable difference is UP16 has uniform flex, whereas Head and Prince flex more in the throat. I recall 97P launch angle being high, more than UP16 and definitely more than the Head. All are nice racquets.

Interest in the 97P abated then. I'd want no more launch angle than the UP 16x19, which is ideal and subtle. If the Touch PP is lower, all the better. I may not regret this unnecessary PP purchase after all.

"There seems to be a clear coat on the frame that is easily damaged."

I put some Head tape around my frame and when I took it off, it peeled some of this clear coat off. I'm not amused at all. Any remedies for this?

I preferred the GTPP to the 97P, which is why I purchased the GTPP. Like I said, still have mine, won't sell them. Only the UP16 was better for me.

It's one of the top racquets released in the last 3 years. Really nothing compares... I wish I had more time to play they are just sitting in my closet...

How is this racket with string breaking? I know it is 16x18 but with 8 mains in the throat maybe it's not as bad as most 16x18s?
It's not that hard on strings as I can get about 8-9 hours with a basic synthetic string like Gosen Micro 16. However, a 17 gauge will break within a few hours.

Funny I string it at 60 for control and that is full poly

Enjoying it still? I got sucked into different racquets, went on a wild ride and ended up with a wrist injury. Coming back to the phantoms as soon as I heal. I remember loving the PT2.0 after the 97P because it made the 97P feel like it had a rubber throat. Any negative thoughts about the 97P?

Also I am interested in the O3 100 and 93P 14x18... can't make up my mind, 14x18 for fun, O3 for re-injury prevention, 97P for playability?

It's 16/18, but isn't it too coarse? UP 18/20 is hard and I'm looking for a replacement racket, but I'm worried about the controllability of Phantom 97P.

Joined the club. Racquet came strung with what looks like Syn Gut from the retailer (moves around quite a bit after even a few rallies). I will play with it for a few more hitting sessions just to use up the string a bit, but then replace it with a Hybrid setup (Poly/Syn gut or Multi, or may even try a poly/poly combo).

I haven't had enough time with it to make a full assessment/review, and I may wait until I have a better string setup in order to be fair to the racquet.

I like it very much so far, a great feel, I like the flex, even with these strings and the movement I have had enough control, spin, and variety to utilize for a complete game. With the right strings, I think this racquet is only going to get better.

I have modified my 97P with weight in the head and handle (plus added an overgrip and a No. 64 Rubberband dampener woven through worm-style).

Updates to come.

I'm still injured but I settled back on the 97P for when I am back, I also have a graphite 97 to mess around with and the japanese model tour 95
Is that the white tour 95 you have? If so, would love to hear your thoughts on that and the graphite 97 when you hit with them.

I picked up a couple of these frames and had them strung with Confidential 17G @ 48. Put in a total of 2 grams each at 2 and 10. I've really gelled well with this frame. Very plush and good deal of control. It really does feel like a easier 93P to play with. The "high" launch angle is not an issue, in fact couple of times when I was defending, I found it really helped in getting the ball back across the net. So far amongst the 93P (18x20), 100X (305), 100X (18 x 20), 100P, 107G, I feel this frame to be very easy to swing and at the same time the control (directional and Depth) seem to be spot on for my game. Serves too a day or so to dial in. The slice serve is awesome with this racquet. Happy Playing....

Absolutely agree with everything you said. The 97P is a peach! I'd like to try one in 16x20, and see how that would play... only because I feel that would lock down the flat put away... but as it is, it's still brilliant.
