Prince Response 97 - do you lead yours?

I add to 3&9 and handle to make it 350ish gram strung, still keeping it much headlight. More stable this way.

Thanks, it seems my calculations were way off since I didn't account for the heat shrink sleeve the previous owner put on, either. 14g for that, 8g for going to leather from ResiPro, 5g for OG, then 6.5g of lead & 2g dampener in the head. 13.25oz static, 335 SW, and ~10.5 pts HL if my calculations are correct . But I'm loving it.

Reviving this thread because I was swinging my Response 97 around this weekend and it feels so good without hitting a ball, but once I hit one, I realize there's something off still. Can't really beat other frames I'm using like the Prince Graphite 100 or Wilson Prostaff 90...or even the good old Triple Threat Warrior (the reissue one is lighter but noticeably plays a lot different despite almost being the same racquet otherwise).

What are your successful string setups? (I've read this entire thread so if you've given a setup already that you liked earlier in the post, how much are you liking it now? I feel like that initial honeymoon period with any string generated a lot of excitement and that sometimes changes after you play for a while with it). I have Wilson Sensation at 58lbs. Felt better than with full bed of poly or a hybrid but it's harder to generate spin..

I'm curious too. I bought two second handed responses about two months ago but I haven't used them yet because of my shoulder injury. From the comments I've read I guess that 1 or 2 grams at 12 o'clock would be a nice addition.

I've tried the lead at 12 o'clock and didn't care for it. I put quite a bit there too...it just didn't give it any more pop than it already had. I now have the same amount of lead now at 3 and 9 o'clock, and may add a little at 12 in addition to that since I've had success with that kind of lead placement with the Prince Graphites.

My issue with this racquet is that it doesn't seem to give as much power as it feels like it's going to, and the sweetspot is tiny and everything hit outside of it just dies. Really a shame, I wanted so much for it to play better that I gave it many chances with different strings, tensions, lead tape setups, etc. and it still disappointed most of the time. The Triple Threat Warrior is similar but for some reason I've had a lot more better days with it without doing a lot of mods. It's definitely lighter by a good amount so it seems to just match the thickness of the racquet better. If you have a heavy thicker frame like this one it seems to lose a lot of feel and you overhit unpredictably and the lack of maneuverability makes the game more difficult.

My experience with this racket is that it is quite tension sensitive. When I tried proximity of 60lbs, it felt like a board with no power, but at 55 or lower, it becomes very lively. For me, multi seems to work/feel better than poly (may be this is really an old school racket). Regarding leads, I used to have some at 3 & 9, but I wanted to change a little, so will try 12 instead. Haven't hit yet.

Precision Response 660 MP is like this as well.
You need:
  • 3 grams @ 12 o'clock - solves a dead upper hoop, ensures enough power (I used a 6'' long run of lead tape, I think this way is the best)
  • approx 3-4 grams @ 3+9 o'clock - this should solve a tiny sweet spot (if needed more, add couple of grams more)
  • 6-6.5 grams @ 7'' from the butt - this is the swing MgR/I compensation for 3 grams @ 12 o'clock
  • few grams @ the butt if you feel you need to correct the balance to more head light and to compensate for the static moment (weight in your hand when you hold the racquet still)
All in all, around 15 grams added total should do the trick.

Cool, thanks for the specs! I'll try it out, what kind of string did you use in it? I feel that makes a big difference in this frame too, as well as tension. So crazy, there are so many racquets out there where you don't have to jump through this many hoops just to use it, haha...

Have you tried just regular Prince Synthetic Gut Original? I feel that's probably one of the best strings for this frame. It kind of needs more oomph and multi and poly strings I feel both deaden the string bed. The multi deadens it by making it feel too soft and mushy and the poly deadens it because poly tends to just deaden in general...

Well I cannot exactly recommend what I've put in it...I've got this old used frame really cheap, then tried to customize it to something I'd like, which I eventually succeeded, said 'ok, this is it, you've got a good racquet now'...and then moved on to my next experiment setup :)

But string bed was indeed interesting. Consists of Signum Pro Tornado in the mains and Poly Star Classic in the crosses, and tensions are 22.5/24.5 kg, if I remember correctly. Yes, the crosses 2 kg tighter. And because Poly Star Classic, at least as produced nowadays, is not nearly as slick a poly as any decent modern poly is, the string bed turned out to be pretty controlled when it comes to launch angle, yet with still enough spin to keep the balls in. Very predictable string bed.

Many try this setup and in fact, whoever tried it, thought it was the best of my all setups. I didn't feel right about this since I think of it as a least intervention, and anyway, I do think players enjoy its string bed's predictability and control.

So if anyone thinks about predictability and is willing to sacrifice some spin, I think this combo of less slick poly, tighter crosses and spin profiled mains is pretty interesting to try. But whoever expects especially strong spin will be disappointed. This is primarily a control oriented string bed, and control of this setup is really good.

Now what I think makes it worthwhile to customize the Response: it has a dense upper hoop, which is so predictable and so controlled, perhaps even more because of its roundish-oval hoop shape. It's one of those racquets which will produce least surprises to the baseliner who likes to hit hard and consistently hit deep without overhitting. And furthermore, it has some real volleying quality too. Such racquets are special.

Hi Everyone !

After years playing with the response final set up is .....350 grams with lead at 3 and 9........cg at 32cm
After several strings....a soft full bed of copoly gave me the best results.........Volkl Cyclone tour..........ranging from 58/54
56/52 and 55/51
Gave excellent Playability !

Hi Everyone ! Anyone still using the response 97 ?
I kept on experimenting and my update is this......center of gravity 32cm
Total weight 357/358 grams overgrip and dampner
String Volkl Cyclone Tour 16
At 51.5 mains and 55.5 crosses
All the best ! Happy playing

The PR97 used to be my go to stick for a few years. I developed elbow issues with it and ultimately decided to finally hang it on the wall next to my Donnay pro one/and really old Wilson Hyper Hammer. I loved it though for years. I’m using the prince phantom p100p now, and am intrigued by the new 18x20 and the 93p 14x18. Still waiting on reviews for them.

I have the Prince classic response from 5 years ago or so. Also now using phantom 100p now but the response is in my bag. Mine is stock. It swings fast for a 12oz frame so I wouldn't change it.
