Does your game rely on topspin or not?
How would you compare the two string patterns in term of topsin?
I'm a 4.5 player. I hit a heavy topspin forehand and a relatively flat 2hbh. So yes, my game relies on topspin, and I'd say that the frames are pretty darn close in terms of topspin. That said, the 16x18 does seem to produce a little more spin, but given that the 18x20 gives me more confidence to hit out, I seem to hit with an even amount topspin with both frames on my forehand. And the 18x20 seems to really benefit my backhand and volleys. On the serve, the 18x20 is a little lower powered (just a bit) but seems to offer better directional control. I'm a fan of the Tour in both string patterns, but definitely prefer the 18x20.
And IMHO, I'm starting to think that the vast majority of players might benefit from denser string patterns, as players really don't seem to master control until the reach the 5.0 level or better. After all, we can all rip impressive winners at times, but it's only the truly great players who can do so consistently.
